How to Solve NYT Connections Without Looking Up Hints

The most reliable hint-free method for NYT Connections is to delay your first guess. Read all 16 tiles, mark several possible relationships, define a category precisely, and test whether the other 12 words still form sensible groups. When five words appear to fit, assume one is a deliberate overlap until you can explain the extra word’s second use. Submit the strongest group regardless of its color, use One Away as limited information rather than a cue to guess again, and let elimination finish the board.

This approach preserves the puzzle’s intended challenge: finding four groups of four while resisting categories that are technically plausible but not the editor’s intended answer.

What NYT Connections asks you to do

Connections presents 16 words in a four-by-four board. Your task is to divide every tile into four groups of four. A correct group disappears; solving all four groups completes the puzzle. The New York Times describes it as a game about finding themes between words.

The difficulty is not simply recognizing a relationship. Words are chosen so that a tile can appear to belong to more than one group. A word may be a synonym, a proper name, an abbreviation, part of a familiar phrase, or a term with an unrelated second definition. The intended solution is the division that accounts for every tile at once.

Color labels are difficulty signals, not a solving order

Completed groups are labeled yellow, green, blue, or purple, from easiest to trickiest. The color appears with the solved group; it does not tell you which group to attempt first. A confident purple group is a better opening move than a shaky yellow one.

Examples of the category style

The Times Help Center gives examples such as FISH: Bass, Flounder, Salmon, Trout, and Things that start with FIRE: Ant, Drill, Island, Opal. The second example shows why a category can describe how words combine rather than what they mean independently.

Step 1: Inventory the entire board before clicking

Read every tile once without selecting anything. The first attractive pair or trio can create a false sense of certainty, and selecting it encourages you to interpret the remaining words around that choice. A complete scan keeps the whole board available for comparison.

During the scan, make mental notes in several buckets:

  • Synonyms or words from the same subject area.
  • Proper names, initials, abbreviations, and titles.
  • Words that could follow or precede a common word.
  • Alternate definitions, homophones, and words whose spelling looks significant.
  • Tiles that seem to fit two unrelated ideas.

Do not rank a connection merely because it is familiar. “These are related to music” is an observation, not yet a category. Your first goal is to generate candidates that can be tested against the complete board.

Step 2: State a category precisely

A strong category explains exactly why four words belong together and predicts what should be left. “Types of musical instruments” is stronger than “things related to music”; “words that can follow fire” is stronger than “words associated with fire.” Precision is useful because it makes the fourth word a prediction rather than a lucky recognition.

Use the fourth word as a test

When you have three plausible tiles, ask which fourth tile completes the same rule. If you cannot describe the rule in one short phrase, keep the candidate provisional. Then look at the remaining 12 words: do they contain three similarly specific groups, or did your proposal leave a pile of unrelated leftovers?

Hunt for the fifth word

Five apparent matches are a warning, not permission to choose the first four. Connections is deliberately built around overlapping meanings. One of the five may have a second definition that belongs elsewhere, or the apparent category may be too broad. Compare each candidate against the other groups and remove the word whose fit is least exact.

A useful question is: “Which word would an editor most easily reuse in another category?” That tile is often the intended trap. Do not submit until you can explain why it belongs in your chosen group and why the tempting fifth word does not.

Step 3: Check the remainder before submitting

Mentally remove your proposed four and inspect the 12 remaining tiles as a fresh puzzle. Try to name three exact categories, not just three themes. If the remainder becomes incoherent, your original group is probably too broad or contains a red herring.

This remainder check is the main difference between a plausible guess and a defensible solve. It also produces information without spending a mistake: a category that leaves clean leftovers gains confidence, while one that strands several words should be revised.

Step 4: Switch from meaning to structure when needed

If semantic groupings stall, test relationships based on form. The game can reward a shared word before or after each tile, homophones, abbreviations, spelling patterns, or familiar expressions.

Shared-word patterns

Say each candidate aloud with the same word placed before it and then after it. A phrase category may be invisible if you consider the tiles only as standalone definitions.

Sound and spelling patterns

Check for homophones, silent-letter patterns, repeated endings, initials, or a common change in spelling. These are especially useful when three words look semantically unrelated but sound or combine alike.

Names and abbreviations

Proper names, shortened forms, and initials can create a group that is not a conventional topic. Verify that all four use the same type of abbreviation or naming convention; a loose collection of famous names is not precise enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: Submit the strongest group, whatever its color

There is no advantage to waiting for yellow. Color is revealed only after a group is solved and reflects difficulty, not priority. If a blue or purple category is exact and leaves a coherent remainder, it is the correct move.

Before pressing submit, run a three-part check:

  1. Can you state one precise rule that covers all four selected tiles?
  2. Is every apparent fifth match explained as a different use, a broader relationship, or a coincidence?
  3. Do the 12 unselected tiles plausibly divide into three groups of four?

If all three answers are yes, submit. If one answer is no, continue scanning instead of converting uncertainty into a mistake.

What “One Away” means—and what it does not

One Away means that three of your selected words belong to one intended group and one selected word does not. The message does not identify the wrong tile, and it does not tell you which replacement to make.

Treat the result as partial information. Keep the three strongest members, then reopen the whole board and test each possible fourth tile against the exact category. An impulsive swap can turn a useful clue into a second error because the original trio may still be too broad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Each incorrect submission consumes one of the puzzle’s four available mistakes. One Away therefore narrows the possibilities but still carries a cost. Use it only when the category is otherwise well defined and you have compared the alternatives.

How to use the board as it gets smaller

Shuffle to break visual fixation

Rearranging the tiles costs no mistake and can interrupt a pattern your eyes have locked onto. Shuffling does not add information, so use it as an attention reset rather than as evidence that a category has changed.

Let solved groups reduce ambiguity

After one or two groups disappear, reassess the reduced board. A word that looked like a red herring may now have only one viable role. Continue to apply the remainder check after each proposed group; the smaller board makes precise categories easier to see.

Finish by elimination

Once three groups are secure, the last four tiles necessarily form the final group, even if its label is not obvious. At that point, verify that no earlier group could be rearranged into a more coherent division, then submit the remaining four.

A spoiler-free decision framework

Different tactics expose you to different levels of information and risk. The table compares the main options without requiring an external hint.

Approach Spoiler exposure Information gained per attempt Mistake risk Handling overlapping meanings
Full-board scan and category testing None High: compares all 16 tiles before commitment Low, because you can defer submission Strong; the fifth-word test is built in
Submit the first attractive group None Low; it tests one early impression High when the category is broad Weak; red herrings can define the solve
Structural or phrase search None Medium to high when semantic clues stall Low if the shared rule is exact Strong against words with multiple definitions
One Away follow-up None Medium; confirms three members but not the wrong tile Medium to high because it uses a guess Useful only with a precise category
Shuffle None None; it changes presentation, not facts None Indirectly helpful by breaking fixation
Looking up an external hint Some or substantial spoiler exposure Depends on the hint supplied Usually avoids an in-game guess Can bypass rather than teach the overlap

For a no-hints solve, the first, third, and final-elimination approaches provide the best balance: they increase information while preserving the puzzle’s discovery.

Common red herrings and how to defuse them

Overbroad themes

“Food,” “things in a house,” or “words connected with sports” can absorb many tiles. Replace the theme with a testable rule: a specific type, a shared prefix, a phrase completion, or a defined set of names.

Four words that fit but leave nonsense

When your selected group looks good yet the remaining 12 do not, do not rationalize the leftovers. Reconsider the least distinctive tile in the first group. The intended partition must account for the whole board.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Color chasing

Trying to solve yellow first confuses a display label with a strategy. Work on whichever group has the clearest rule, regardless of expected difficulty.

Changing one tile too quickly after One Away

One Away identifies a wrong member, not the correction. Keep the three strongest words fixed temporarily and evaluate every possible fourth tile against the category and the remaining board.

Ignoring non-semantic clues

If topic-based groupings fail, do not conclude that the board is impossible. Test phrase position, sound, spelling, abbreviations, and alternate definitions before spending another guess.

How many mistakes can you make?

You can make four incorrect submissions before the puzzle is lost. A wrong group, including a One Away attempt, uses one of those opportunities. Because the game does not reveal which tile is wrong, preserving attempts for well-tested categories is more valuable than maximizing the number of guesses.

What difficulty research shows

The 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics paper NYT-Connections: A Deceptively Simple Text Classification Task that Stumps System-1 Thinkers assembled 358 puzzles and evaluated 100 median-difficulty instances. In its reported input-output results, human evaluators averaged 39.33% one-try accuracy, 56.0% with no hints, and 60.67% with full hints. The best listed model reached 11%, 45.0%, and 40.25% under those same conditions.

Those figures describe that experiment, not the solve rate of all NYT players: only three people evaluated the human conditions, and the paper did not provide a representative population statistic. Its interpretation nevertheless matches experienced play. Fast, intuitive grouping is vulnerable to deliberate misdirection, while checking the remainder requires slower, more deliberate reasoning.

A repeatable no-hints routine

  1. Read all 16 tiles. Note synonyms, names, abbreviations, phrase fragments, alternate meanings, and spelling or sound clues.
  2. Draft several exact categories. Prefer rules that explain four words specifically rather than broad subjects.
  3. Search for the fifth match. If one appears, identify the tile whose second use may place it elsewhere.
  4. Test the remainder. Mentally remove the candidate group and require three coherent groups among the 12 leftovers.
  5. Change clue type if necessary. Try shared words, homophones, abbreviations, spelling patterns, and expressions.
  6. Submit the clearest group. Yellow is not mandatory; certainty matters more than color.
  7. Interpret One Away conservatively. Three members are right, one is wrong, and the message does not name the wrong tile.
  8. Shuffle when attention stalls. Use the free rearrangement to reset your visual reading.
  9. Use elimination at the end. Once three groups are secure, submit the final four after a last consistency check.

Practice without giving away the answer

The official Games service supports digital play on its website and apps. Subscribers with archive access can play puzzles dating back to June 12, 2023, and eligible subscribers can review Connections Bot statistics.
