Size it from the critical load the UPS must actually carry, check both watts and VA, then verify runtime for the exact UPS and battery configuration at that load. The runtime target must match the site plan for generator transfer, equipment shutdown, cooling and any workload-specific power swings.
1. Define what must stay powered
Start by listing the loads that need battery protection under the operating scenario you are designing for. This usually means the required servers, storage, network and management equipment; include cooling components only if the resilience plan requires them to remain on the UPS.

Separate essential equipment from loads that can be shed. Estimate their coincident demand—the amount they draw at the same time—and state whether your design basis is measured operating load, expected peak load or planned design load. Use metered data or equipment power information when available, and account for credible future additions rather than sizing only for today’s convenient average. Schneider Electric’s UPS Selector similarly advises entering expected equipment draw and considering future needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Calculate the UPS output requirement in watts and VA
Add the real power draw in watts for the critical loads. The UPS must be able to supply that load, with an appropriate design margin, without exceeding its output-watt rating. APC’s general buying guide recommends choosing UPS output-watt capacity 20–25% above the total draw of connected equipment. Treat that as a starting rule of thumb, not a complete engineering calculation or a guarantee that a unit is suitable for a high-density installation. Check the specifications and design requirements for the exact product and site. APC UPS Buying Guide.

Check VA as well as watts. Watts measure real power; VA is voltage multiplied by current. Power factor describes the relationship between them, so a load can meet a UPS’s watt limit while exceeding its VA limit. Where a representative aggregate power factor is known, apparent power in VA is approximately watts divided by power factor. Confirm that the candidate UPS meets both output limits at the load’s power factor.
Illustrative calculation
Suppose the critical load is 18 kW and its aggregate power factor is 0.90. Its apparent demand is approximately 20 kVA (18 kW ÷ 0.90). Applying APC’s 20–25% watt-capacity guidance gives a starting output-watt range of 21.6–22.5 kW. This is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a model recommendation: the selected system still needs to meet its VA, voltage, phase, runtime, redundancy and site requirements.
3. Match the UPS to the electrical service and installation
Record the site’s input and required output voltage, single- or three-phase service, connection types, topology and power-quality needs. Include bypass requirements, redundancy target, battery compatibility, footprint, rack space, heat, maintenance and serviceability in the comparison. Capacity labels alone do not establish fit.
The cited product-family ranges illustrate why installation scale and service matter; they do not prove that any particular configuration is right for your site:

4. Set the runtime objective before choosing batteries
Write down what the UPS must accomplish on battery and what should happen when that time ends. Common objectives are to bridge generator start and transfer, ride through a short interruption, or support an orderly shutdown. Continued operation requires a different runtime target from a shutdown-only plan.
Schneider Electric’s 2020 data-center article says generators typically start and accept transfer in 10–20 seconds, but that is a general example, not a site specification or a recommended UPS runtime for every micro data center. Measure or confirm the generator and transfer behavior at your facility. The same article notes that longer runtime can bring higher capital and maintenance costs, and that the appropriate duration depends on application resilience and risk tolerance. Schneider Electric: “Design Considerations of UPS Systems in Data Centers”.
5. Verify runtime at the expected load
Once the UPS family and runtime objective are clear, use the manufacturer’s runtime table, selector or configuration tool for the exact UPS and battery arrangement at the expected critical load. Runtime varies with the UPS, supported load and battery configuration; a battery’s nominal energy rating by itself does not tell you how long the UPS will deliver AC power to your equipment.

If you need external battery modules, confirm that they are supported by the chosen UPS and check the runtime curve for that specific combination. Recheck the calculation if the load, battery arrangement or operating objective changes. Schneider Electric’s UPS Selector notes that runtime depends on supported load and the UPS’s technical characteristics.

In a dense rack, UPS sizing cannot be separated from the cooling and generator plan. Schneider Electric’s 2020 article gives 10–20 kW per rack for hyper-converged examples and 30–100 kW per rack for blade-server examples. It says racks in these examples may face thermal overload within seconds of a cooling outage, and that backup power for some or all HVAC may make sense in such conditions. These are examples from that article, not universal density thresholds or a prediction for every room. Schneider Electric data-center UPS considerations.
Determine how quickly the actual IT load becomes unsafe without cooling, which cooling components must remain available, and whether those components belong on the UPS, generator or another protected path. Account for fast-changing AI loads
For AI workloads with material rapid load variation, steady-state watts and runtime may not describe the full sizing problem. Vertiv’s 2025 paper identifies transition amplitude, repetition rate and UPS response capability as relevant considerations for these profiles. It does not give one battery-sizing formula that applies to every micro data center, so include workload behavior in the technical review rather than assuming a generic runtime curve resolves transient-performance needs. Vertiv, “Importance of UPS and battery sizing with AI workloads” (2025).
Final selection checklist
- Load basis: critical equipment, coincident demand, whether the design uses measured, peak or planned load, and credible expansion.
- Electrical fit: output watts and VA at the load’s power factor, input and output voltage, phase and connection requirements.
- Runtime: defined end-of-battery action and manufacturer-verified runtime for the exact UPS, load and battery configuration.
- Resilience: redundancy and service approach, battery compatibility, cooling ride-through, generator/transfer behavior and any load-shedding sequence.
- Installation: topology, bypass needs, footprint, rack space, heat and facility integration.
For a final design—particularly a high-density or three-phase deployment—validate the configuration against current product documentation and have a qualified electrical or data-center engineer review the site requirements.
