1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGitHub Actions cron is convenient for lightweight automation, but GitHub warns that scheduled runs can be delayed during periods of high workflow load—especially at the start of an hour—and that some queued runs may be dropped under sufficiently high load. For jobs where trigger delivery matters, consider a managed scheduler close to the workload: Amazon EventBridge Scheduler for AWS targets, Google Cloud Scheduler for Google Cloud tasks, or Azure Logic Apps when the work is already an Azure workflow. None of these choices, by itself, guarantees that the full job or its downstream work will succeed.
When GitHub Actions cron is—and is not—a good fit
GitHub Actions remains a sensible choice when a scheduled task is lightweight, repository-centric, and tolerant of occasional delay. Its documented caveats matter more when a job has a deadline, handles time-sensitive data, or must account for every scheduled event. GitHub says high workflow load can delay schedule events and, in sufficiently busy conditions, queued events can be dropped. Avoiding the top of the hour may reduce exposure to a busy period if a small delay is acceptable, but it is not a delivery guarantee. GitHub documents the schedule-event caveats.

Before migrating, check two common causes of an apparently missing run: scheduled workflows run only from the repository’s default branch, and schedules in public repositories are automatically disabled after 60 days without repository activity. GitHub’s schedule documentation describes both behaviors.

Know the schedule limits
GitHub schedule expressions use POSIX cron, run in UTC by default, and support optional IANA time zones. The shortest supported interval is five minutes. A time-zone schedule can be affected by daylight-saving changes when a local clock hour is skipped. Review the GitHub workflow syntax documentation before changing an existing expression.

|---|---|---|---|
GitHub Actions schedule |
Lightweight jobs already tied to repository automation | POSIX cron; UTC default with optional IANA time zones; five-minute shortest interval | High-load delays and possible dropped queued events; default-branch requirement; public-repository schedules disabled after 60 days without activity. See GitHub’s event documentation and workflow syntax documentation. |
| Amazon EventBridge Scheduler | Schedules targeting AWS APIs or workloads | Cron, rate, and one-time schedules; configurable flexible delivery windows, retries, and failed-invocation retention | It invokes a configured target; target execution and downstream success remain operational concerns. AWS recommends Scheduler over legacy scheduled rules. See AWS’s legacy scheduled-rules guidance and EventBridge Scheduler schedule management. |
| Google Cloud Scheduler | Google Cloud tasks and endpoints | Configurable cron schedule and time zone; sends jobs to a configured target; at-least-once delivery | Design jobs to tolerate repeated delivery, and account for daylight-saving anomalies. See Cloud Scheduler overview and cron format and time-zone guidance. |
| Azure Logic Apps | Recurring work already modeled as an Azure workflow | Microsoft documents recurring workflow schedules | The documentation establishes workflow scheduling, not equivalent trigger reliability or a drop-in replacement for every GitHub Actions job. See Microsoft’s recurring workflow trigger documentation. |
Choose the scheduler that fits the job
Choose EventBridge Scheduler for AWS-centered work
If the scheduled action is an AWS API call or an AWS workload, EventBridge Scheduler can put the trigger near that target. AWS documents cron, rate, and one-time schedules, along with flexible delivery windows, retries, and retention of failed invocations. These are configuration controls, not promises of exact-second triggering or successful downstream processing. AWS also recommends EventBridge Scheduler over its legacy scheduled rules. Read the schedule management documentation to understand targets and schedule behavior.
Choose Cloud Scheduler for Google Cloud targets
Cloud Scheduler sends a job to a configured target and uses at-least-once delivery. That means a delivery can be repeated; the job should be idempotent or otherwise safe to run more than once. Its time zone is configurable and defaults to UTC, and Google warns of execution anomalies around daylight-saving clock changes. See Google’s service overview and its schedule format and time-zone guidance.

Choose Logic Apps when the task is already a workflow
Logic Apps is a natural candidate when the scheduled work is already represented as an Azure workflow and benefits from being orchestrated there. Microsoft documents recurring workflow triggers, but the cited guidance does not establish a reliability comparison with GitHub Actions or show that Logic Apps is a direct replacement for every repository-based job. See Microsoft Learn’s recurring schedule documentation.

Keep GitHub Actions for low-criticality repository automation
If a task can tolerate a delayed trigger and is easiest to maintain beside its code, GitHub Actions may still be the simplest option. Place the schedule away from the hour boundary if timing is flexible, and verify the default branch and public-repository inactivity behavior when investigating a missed run.

Plan the migration: a scheduler does not move the job
Changing the trigger does not automatically relocate the work. A cloud scheduler can call an API or cloud target while the existing job continues to run elsewhere. Plan for target authentication and permissions, and decide where operators will see invocation failures and job-completion failures.
- Identify the actual target. Decide whether the scheduled event should call an AWS or Google Cloud target, start an Azure workflow, or invoke an endpoint that runs the existing job.
- Translate the schedule carefully. GitHub documents POSIX cron syntax. EventBridge Scheduler’s documented cron expression has six fields, including a year field, so do not copy a GitHub expression without checking the target service’s syntax. Compare GitHub’s schedule syntax with AWS schedule documentation. Set the intended time zone explicitly where supported.
- Make repeated delivery safe. Where delivery is at least once, use an idempotency key, deduplication record, or another mechanism that prevents a duplicate trigger from repeating an unsafe business operation.
- Separate invocation retries from job retries. Scheduler retries address failures to invoke a target; the job itself can still fail after it starts. Define how each type is detected and recovered rather than assuming one retry policy covers both.
- Monitor completion, not just triggering. Track expected invocations and successful task completion, alert on missed runs or persistent failures, and define a manual recovery path for work that must be completed.
What “dependable” should mean for your job
There is no blanket reliability ranking established by these providers’ scheduling documentation. Choose based on where the workload already runs and the delivery behavior it can tolerate. For a critical job, evaluate the whole chain: scheduled event, target availability, permissions, job execution, downstream services, and visibility into failure. A scheduler with retries can improve control over invocation, but it cannot by itself prove that every scheduled business task finished successfully.
