To compare WoW racials accurately, clone one SimulationCraft profile for each race, keep every combat variable identical, and change only the race and its racial actions. Compare damage per second (DPS), healing per second (HPS), defensive and control events, and each result’s error interval separately. A racial is only meaningfully ahead when its difference is larger than simulation variance and it improves the encounter you actually play.
What a racial simulation can—and cannot—answer
SimulationCraft is an event-driven World of Warcraft combat simulator. It models rotations, cooldowns, resources, procs, raid damage and other interactions that make closed-form calculators unreliable. Its documentation notes that increasing class synergy and the prevalence of proc-based combat modifiers have eroded the accuracy of traditional calculators built on simplified approximations.

A simulation can answer a narrowly defined question such as “Which race produces more single-target damage for this specialization, gear set, patch and fight length?” It can also estimate healing throughput and, when the profile exposes the events, resource pressure, defensive uptime and deaths prevented. It cannot turn every racial effect into a universal DPS number. Utility depends on the encounter, the route, group coordination and what would otherwise happen without the racial.

Lock the version and scenario before you run anything
Racial values and race availability change with patches. Blizzard’s Midnight expansion is live as of March 3, 2026, and added the Haranir allied race. Record the following at the top of every comparison:
- Expansion and patch or build number.
- Region and character edition, if those affect available races.
- SimulationCraft release or commit.
- Date the character profile was imported.
- Class, specialization, role, talents, gear, embellishments and consumables.
- Encounter style, target count, movement assumptions and fight duration.
- Player-skill setting, raid buffs and external cooldown assumptions.
- Iteration count, confidence setting and the number of repeat runs.
Without this record, a result cannot be reproduced after a hotfix. A “best race” statement that omits the patch or encounter is broader than the evidence supports.
Build a controlled baseline profile
1. Import and verify the character
Import the character into your simulator and inspect the generated profile rather than assuming the import is complete. Confirm the specialization, talent tree, equipment, gems, enchants, set bonuses, legendary or crafted effects, consumables and available raid buffs. Fix the baseline first; copying an error into every race makes the comparison precise but wrong.

The character configuration supports an explicit race field. Set the role to dps, heal or tank so the profile uses the intended behavior. A healer profile can generate HPS and other healing statistics even when a report interface labels the result as DPS. Always inspect the generated profile and report to verify that the specialization and role were interpreted correctly.
3. Choose one encounter model
Use the same target count, target health, fight duration, movement, downtime, adds, raid damage and execute behavior for every race. If you want both a patchwerk result and a movement-heavy result, run two complete sets and label them separately; do not mix their numbers in one ranking.
4. Save the baseline
Export or save the baseline profile before changing the race. This file is your control: every clone should differ only where the racial implementation requires a change.

Model active and passive racials correctly
Active abilities
Active racials must appear in the action list when the profile is expected to use them. The official action-list documentation identifies arcane_torrent, berserking, blood_fury and stoneform as racial actions. Add the relevant action to each race’s profile, then confirm that it appears in the report’s timeline and ability breakdown. If the action is absent, a zero contribution means “not modeled,” not “worthless.”
Blizzard’s documented examples illustrate why timing matters: Blood Fury increases attack power and spell power by 10% for 15 seconds; Berserking increases casting and attack speed by 10% for 10 seconds; Stoneform grants immunity to bleeds, poisons and diseases and reduces physical damage taken for 8 seconds. These are version-specific examples from Blizzard’s 2024 documentation, not timeless guarantees. A simulator may also apply class-specific conditions, cooldowns and stat conversions, so check the current implementation.
Passive abilities
Passive racials should be supplied through the simulator’s race implementation, not copied as a hand-written stat bonus unless the documentation explicitly requires it. Verify the result through the report’s buffs, gains and spell breakdown. A passive that never appears may be inactive, unsupported in that release or irrelevant to the selected encounter; investigate before drawing a conclusion.
Race-specific utility examples
Shadowmeld is described by Blizzard as granting stealth while immobile. Eureka! is documented as reducing cost and increasing damage or healing by 10% on the next three spells or abilities. Whether either effect matters depends on when the encounter allows use, what mechanic is skipped and whether the lost or gained casts alter later cooldown alignment. Treat these examples as patch-qualified mechanics, not a universal score.
Clone the profile for every race
- Duplicate the verified baseline profile.
- Change only the
racevalue. - Add or remove only the racial action that belongs to that race.
- Leave class, specialization, talents, gear, encounter, fight style, player skill, buffs, duration, iterations and confidence unchanged.
- Generate the profile and confirm the race and racial action in the report.
- Run the full set under the same conditions, preferably in a batch so settings cannot drift.
Do not change talents to “fit” a race during the first pass. That creates a class-and-race optimization study rather than an isolated racial comparison. If you later test race-specific talent choices, publish it as a separate scenario with its own assumptions.

Measure DPS without overstating a small lead
For damage dealers, record mean DPS and the reported error interval for every race. Also record the encounter name, patch, fight style and iteration count directly above the result table. A useful table has one row per race and does not combine unlike encounters.

| Scenario (label these fields above each result) | Race | Mean DPS | Error interval | Active racial used |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Patch, build, encounter, duration and iterations: not stated in the available evidence | Each race tested | Not stated; run the controlled profile | Not stated; read the report | Verify in the action list and timeline |
The table is a reporting template, not a hidden ranking. A 200-DPS difference can be meaningful in one high-iteration profile and indistinguishable from noise in another. Compare intervals, not just the headline mean.
Burst-window alignment
Run a separate scenario when the question is burst rather than sustained damage. Keep the boss’s vulnerability window, lust or equivalent effects, add timing and cooldown resets fixed. A racial that aligns with a two-minute burn can outperform one with a higher theoretical average when the encounter rewards that window; the reverse can happen on a long, uninterrupted fight.
Measure healing as throughput and outcome
Do not merge HPS with DPS. For a healer, record HPS, effective healing, overhealing, mana or resource pressure and deaths prevented when the profile supports those outputs. A racial can lower raw HPS while reducing incoming damage or preventing a lethal event, which may be the better result.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Healing metric | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| HPS | Mean healing per second and error interval | Shows throughput under the selected damage pattern |
| Effective healing | Healing that lands on missing health | Separates useful healing from excess output |
| Overhealing | Overheal amount or percentage | Identifies throughput that did not change survival |
| Mana or resource pressure | Final resources, regeneration and emergency spending | Shows whether a gain is sustainable through the fight |
| Deaths prevented | Modeled deaths or lethal events, if available | Connects a defensive or utility racial to an encounter outcome |
Use the heal role for a healing specialization and verify the generated profile. If the report still displays a DPS label, rely on the actual healing statistics and event breakdown rather than the page heading.
Simulate utility as encounter events, not a fake DPS conversion
Utility has no honest universal DPS equivalent. Define the encounter and count the event the racial is meant to change:
- Dispel attempts and successful dispels.
- Crowd-control applications that prevent a cast or interrupt a dangerous target.
- Movement or stealth skips, including whether the skip saves time or avoids damage.
- Defensive-cooldown uptime and physical, magical or periodic damage avoided.
- Deaths prevented, external cooldowns saved and healer attention released.
Run a “with racial” and “without racial” profile with all other actions unchanged. If the simulator cannot represent the event, state that limitation and use a log-based or encounter-analysis comparison rather than inventing a damage number. A racial with little sustained DPS can be superior on a fight where its defensive or control effect prevents a wipe.

Utility worksheet
| Encounter assumption | Event to measure | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Patch, difficulty, route and mechanic timing: not stated in the available evidence | Dispel, control, skip, mitigation or death avoided | Not stated; measure in the profile or combat log |
Write the assumption beside the result. “Best utility” without a mechanic, timing and success condition is not a reproducible claim.
Control variance and confidence
SimulationCraft scale factors add a controlled delta and measure the output change. The documentation warns that fighting variance can obscure small differences. Use a sufficiently large delta, paired conditions, more iterations and repeat runs when races are close. A single short run is especially vulnerable to proc streaks, target movement and random mechanic timing.
The confidence option controls the error interval. For example, confidence=0.97 means the true DPS is expected to lie within the reported error interval with 97% probability. If two races’ intervals overlap substantially, describe them as effectively tied for that scenario. Do not convert a narrow mean difference into a tier list when the uncertainty is larger than the lead.
A practical repeat-run procedure
- Run all race profiles with the same high iteration count.
- Repeat the complete batch with a different random seed.
- Check whether the ordering survives and whether intervals overlap.
- If it does not, increase iterations or use paired conditions before publishing a conclusion.
- Report the spread and confidence setting alongside the means.
Interpret the result by decision axis
Use separate conclusions for the axes below rather than one blended score:
| Axis | Question | Evidence to cite |
|---|---|---|
| Sustained single-target DPS | Which race produces more damage over the full fight? | Mean DPS, interval, fight length and iterations |
| Burst alignment | Which racial fits the encounter’s vulnerability window? | Window timing, cooldown alignment and damage during that window |
| Healing throughput | Which race produces useful healing under this damage pattern? | HPS, effective healing, overhealing and resource pressure |
| Defensive value | Which racial reduces dangerous damage or prevents deaths? | Damage avoided, uptime, lethal events and deaths prevented |
| Control or dispel utility | Which race changes mechanic success? | Successful dispels, interrupts, controls or skips |
| Movement and encounter fit | Does the racial remain usable when movement or stealth rules apply? | Downtime, positioning and mechanic assumptions |
| Statistical significance | Is the observed lead larger than simulation error? | Error intervals, confidence and repeat runs |
Choose the race that solves your actual constraint. If sustained DPS is tied but one racial prevents a recurring lethal mechanic, the defensive result may be the deciding evidence. If utility is never usable in your route, its theoretical value should not override a demonstrated throughput difference.
What the simulator does not capture
- Player execution, reaction time, target selection and missed casts.
- Route planning, stealth skips and group decisions that are not encoded in the profile.
- Coordination quality, voice calls and whether another player can cover the same mechanic.
- Unexpected deaths, disconnects, encounter bugs and progression learning.
- Utility whose success depends on a human choosing the right target at the right moment.
Use the report for modeled output and combat logs or controlled gameplay for effects the profile cannot represent. Never present an uncaptured utility effect as a measured DPS gain.

Troubleshoot implausible results
The active racial does no damage or healing
Check that the action name is present, the racial cooldown is enabled, the action is reachable in the priority list and the report timeline shows a cast. If it is missing, regenerate the profile or update the simulator release before comparing races.
A passive racial never appears
Inspect buffs, gains and spell breakdowns, then confirm that the selected patch implements the race. A passive may be active without a separate cast event, or it may not affect the chosen encounter.
The healer report says DPS
Verify the specialization and heal role in the generated profile. Read HPS and healing events rather than relying on the report label.

Two races swap places between runs
Increase iterations, use a larger controlled delta where appropriate, repeat with paired conditions and compare intervals. Swapping order with overlapping intervals is evidence of a tie, not proof that one race is secretly superior.
The result conflicts with gameplay
Compare assumptions first: patch, fight length, movement, target count, buffs, player skill, racial timing and whether the real encounter contains a utility event absent from the profile. Then inspect the action timeline for missed or mistimed racial casts.
How to publish a defensible comparison
- State the expansion, patch/build, region, simulator release, import date and encounter assumptions.
- Show that class, specialization, talents, gear, buffs, duration, skill and iterations were held constant.
- Provide separate DPS, healing and utility sections.
- Place the exact scenario and patch above every result table.
- Include means, intervals, confidence and repeat-run behavior.
- Call overlapping results effectively tied.
- Describe utility in encounter terms and disclose anything the simulator cannot model.
- Avoid a universal racial ranking; the evidence supports only the tested scenario.
This format lets another player reproduce the comparison and decide whether a small numerical lead is worth trading for a defensive, control or movement advantage.
