How to Sideload Apps on an Xbox in Developer Mode

Xbox Developer Mode sideloading uses a signed appx package and Xbox Device Portal. See prerequisites, installation guidance, troubleshooting, and how to return to Retail Mode.

To manually sideload an app on an Xbox, prepare a compatible, signed appx package and use the Home tab in Xbox Device Portal to install it and any required dependencies. This is a developer workflow for apps you are authorized to deploy—not a way to install arbitrary retail games or unauthorized content. Microsoft’s public guidance describes the package-installation workflow, but does not establish current activation steps or every Device Portal screen for retail consoles; check the current Xbox-specific instructions before following those steps.

What you need to know before sideloading

  • A retail Xbox or a development kit? The public Microsoft UWP instructions cover app development and manual sideloading. Do not assume instructions for an Xbox development kit apply to a retail console.
  • A signed package. Manual installation uses a signed appx package. Microsoft’s general packaging guidance says the signing certificate must be trusted by the target device; confirm the Xbox-specific package and certificate requirements in the Xbox documentation.
  • Developer Mode and a signed-in user. Developer Mode is distinct from Retail Mode, and Microsoft says a user must be signed in to deploy an app.
  • Supported hardware and app format. Microsoft’s UWP FAQ says Xbox no longer supports x86 app development or x86 app submissions to the store. The public sources cited here do not establish compatibility for every Xbox generation or current console configuration.

Microsoft’s Xbox Media App Development Options describes the manual path: create a signed appx package, then use the Device Portal Home tab to side-load the app and its dependencies. Activation eligibility and screens can change, so use the current Xbox Developer Mode Activation instructions for console setup rather than relying on an old click-by-click guide.

Choose manual installation or Visual Studio deployment

Route Best fit What to expect
Manual install through Xbox Device Portal You already have a built package to deploy. Use Device Portal’s Home tab to install the signed package and any dependencies. Follow the current Xbox-specific instructions for portal access and controls.
Deploy from Visual Studio You are developing and deploying from a configured development environment. Microsoft’s UWP FAQ separately covers Visual Studio deployment. The sources cited here do not establish comparative speed or compatibility advantages.

For general package preparation, see Microsoft’s Visual Studio packaging guidance. Some interface details on that page refer to Visual Studio 2019, version 16.3, so check the instructions against the version you use.

Prepare and install the package

  1. Confirm the Xbox instructions and eligibility. Use the current Xbox Developer Mode Activation and Device Portal documentation for your console and account. The public sources here do not verify the exact current retail-console activation sequence, portal address, authentication method, or button labels.
  2. Build a package for the target. Create a compatible appx package and include the app’s required dependencies. Check Xbox-specific requirements rather than assuming all general UWP packaging settings apply to every Xbox.
  3. Verify signing and certificate trust. The package must be signed, and Microsoft’s general packaging guidance says the target device must trust its signing certificate. Follow the Xbox documentation for the device-specific trust procedure; do not install packages from sources you do not trust.
  4. Put the console in Developer Mode and sign in. Microsoft identifies Developer Mode by its Dev Home experience; the Home button opens the retail Home experience in Retail Mode. A signed-in user is required for app deployment.
  5. Use Device Portal’s Home tab. Follow the current Xbox Device Portal instructions to sideload the package and its dependencies. The Microsoft manual-installation page identifies the Home tab as the entry point, but portal-specific connection and screen details should come from the current Xbox instructions.

Fix common deployment problems

  • The console is showing the retail Home screen: Check that the console is in Developer Mode; Microsoft says the Home button leads to Dev Home in that mode.
  • Deployment is rejected or the app will not install: Confirm the package is signed, its certificate is trusted by the target device, and required dependencies are included. Check Xbox-specific compatibility requirements as well.
  • The development PC cannot reach the console: Check that the PC can reach the console’s IP address and that the development environment is configured. Microsoft recommends a wired connection for best deployment performance.
  • The app architecture may be unsupported: Microsoft says Xbox no longer supports x86 app development or x86 app submissions to the store. That statement does not by itself establish compatibility for every console generation or deployment route.

Microsoft’s broader Windows sideloading guidance defines sideloading as installing apps outside an official source and notes security risks in its Windows 10/11 context. That is general signing and security guidance, not proof of Xbox-specific security behavior; use packages you trust and follow the Xbox instructions.

Return to Retail Mode

When you want the console’s retail experience again, open Dev Home and choose Leave developer mode. Microsoft says the console restarts into Retail Mode.
