The app is the software; the subscription is the service you access through it. Apple now calls the subscription Apple TV, though many viewers still search for Apple TV+. The app may offer QR-code sign-in, and some devices let you sign in with the remote.
Before you start
- Connect the TV or streaming device to the internet.
- Have the Apple Account associated with the subscription ready. If you do not have one, Apple provides account creation through its account website.
- Check the device’s app store or app list for Apple TV. Availability and features can differ by model, software version, country, and region.
Apple’s general instruction is to “Look for the Apple TV app on the home screen or apps folder of your Smart TV or streaming device (you may need to install the app first), then open the app and sign in to your Apple Account.” See Apple’s Smart TV and streaming-device guide.

Set up Apple TV on a smart TV or streaming device
- Open the TV’s home screen or apps area and look for the Apple TV app.
- If it is not installed, open the device’s app store, search for “Apple TV,” and install the app if it is available.
- Launch Apple TV and choose the sign-in option. Enter your Apple Account details, or use a sign-in option offered on screen.
- If “Sign In On Mobile Device” appears, scan the QR code with your phone or go to link.apple.com and enter the code shown on the TV. If offered, you can instead choose “Sign in with Remote.”
Apple’s instructions include navigation guidance for Samsung and LG TVs, some Sony models, Panasonic, VIZIO, Hisense, and VIDAA. Menus vary across manufacturers and software versions, so the wording on your screen may differ. For Sony models from 2018–2020, Apple says to check that the TV software is current. Sony models from 2021 onward use the Android TV or Google TV instructions. Hisense Roku and Android TV models use the respective Roku or Android TV steps. See Apple’s device installation guide.

Apple documents these console paths in its gaming-console guide. If the app is unavailable on your console, AirPlay 2 from an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or another supported device may be an alternative. It requires a compatible receiving TV; check Apple’s AirPlay guidance for eligible models rather than assuming every TV supports it.
Starting a subscription is different from watching one
Some devices let you watch Apple TV content but do not support starting purchases or subscriptions in the app. Apple says Android TV and Google TV do not support in-app purchases; Fire TV purchase support depends on device and region. Its device guidance also describes purchase restrictions on certain platforms. If the app does not offer the purchase option you need, subscribe or make the purchase through a supported Apple device, PC, smart TV, Android mobile device, or compatible streaming device, then sign in on the TV with the same Apple Account. Apple lists tv.apple.com and the Apple TV app on supported devices as signup routes; availability of the Google Play version varies by region. See Apple’s subscription guide and device guidance.

In particular, Apple’s UK support page says purchases of other content are unavailable on Fire TV in the US and unavailable on Fire TV in other regions, Android TV, and Sony TV devices. That limitation concerns purchases in those apps; it does not by itself mean an existing subscription cannot be watched after signing in.

- App missing: Search the device’s app store, confirm the device software is current where Apple recommends it, and check compatibility for the exact model. Availability can vary by country or region.
- Sign-in screen offers a code: Use the displayed QR code or visit link.apple.com and enter that code. If the device offers sign-in with a remote, that is another route.
- Subscription not showing: Confirm you signed in with the Apple Account associated with the subscription.
- Cannot subscribe or buy in the TV app: Complete the subscription or purchase on another supported route, then use the same Apple Account on the TV.
- Console app unavailable: Check whether AirPlay 2 is supported by the receiving TV model, or use another compatible device that can run the Apple TV app.
If your television has no compatible Apple TV app and no supported AirPlay receiver, a compatible streaming device is another route. Verify that the exact model and region support Apple TV before choosing hardware; buying a streaming device is unnecessary if the app already works on your TV or console.
