If Android blocks the app because its developer is unverified, the documented advanced route involves a 24-hour security delay before you can enable installation. Don’t turn off Google Play Protect to get around warnings: it also checks apps installed from outside Google Play.
Install an APK downloaded outside Google Play
- Get the APK from a source you trust. Prefer the app developer’s official website or a store the developer identifies. Confirm that the app is meant for your device, and be wary of unexpected requests to install an APK.
- Open the downloaded file. Find the APK in your phone’s Downloads folder or tap it from your browser’s download notification. Android should show an installer prompt.
- Allow the installation if Android asks. On some phones, Android asks you to permit the app or browser you used to download the file to install apps. Review the prompt and follow its instructions; the setting’s location and wording can vary by manufacturer and Android build.
- Review the installer warning before confirming. If the app and its source are what you intended, proceed through the confirmation. Stop if you can’t verify who supplied the file or why you were asked to install it.
Google’s documented settings route for allowing apps from unverified developers is Settings > System > Developer options > Allow apps from unverified developers. It is not a universal menu path: phone makers and Android versions may organize settings differently. If you can’t find the option, search Settings for “unverified developers” or consult your manufacturer’s current help materials. Google’s Android Help instructions describe a one-time setup that takes 24 hours and includes security safeguards. After it completes, you can keep the advanced flow enabled for seven days or indefinitely. When installing an unverified app, Android still displays a warning and the documented confirmation is “Install anyway.”

What to do if Android blocks the app
A block may reflect a security check, not just a missing permission. First, check whether the developer can complete Android’s verification requirements; if so, contact them and ask. Google says apps from participating stores on certified Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand must be registered by a verified developer to install and receive updates starting in September 2026. The stores initially named by Android Help are Google Play, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Samsung Galaxy Store, Palm Store, vivo V-Appstore, and Xiaomi GetApps. Google plans to expand verification capability globally for apps on certified Android devices in 2027.

The described requirements apply to certified Android 8 and later devices. Android Open Source Project and non-certified devices are listed as exempt, as are regions where Google Mobile Services are unsupported and territories subject to applicable trade sanctions. These rules are therefore not a universal explanation for every installation block. Android Help’s verification page gives the current scope and directs users who encounter a block to contact the developer.

Use the advanced flow only if you understand the risk
If the app’s developer is unverified and you still need to install it, Android’s advanced flow provides a one-time route through security checkpoints and a waiting period. Follow the prompts in Settings and read each warning; don’t treat the delay as a routine obstacle to click past. Google describes the 24-hour wait as a safeguard intended to help ensure the decision is informed and independent.
ADB is for development and power-user workflows
Android Debug Bridge (ADB) lets developers and power users build, test, and install modified or unverified apps on their own devices, typically as part of a computer-based development workflow. Google calls it the standard method for development work. It is not required for ordinary phone-to-phone APK installation, and it is not the right workaround for someone who cannot verify an app’s source. Apps distributed through an organization’s store on managed devices do not need to meet the verification requirements described by Google. Keep Play Protect on and assess the warning
Play Protect checks apps from Google Play before download and also checks apps from other sources on your device. It may warn about a potentially harmful app, prevent an installation, disable an app, or remove it. Google recommends keeping it enabled; a warning or block is a reason to investigate the app, not a signal to switch off protection. Read Google’s Play Protect guidance for details. If you choose “Improve harmful app detection” to submit an unknown app for review, Google says app details are sent for code-level evaluation.
Scammers may pose as bank fraud agents, technical support, or delivery services and pressure people to download fake apps. If a request seems unexpected, contact the organization using a verified phone number or its official website rather than a link or number supplied in the message. Google’s guidance on unverified app installs also advises checking with an organization through an official channel when in doubt.
