How to Shut Down an iPhone: Buttons, Settings, and Restarting

Use the right button combination for your iPhone, or shut it down through Control Center or Settings. Here’s how to restart normally and what to do if it is unresponsive.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To shut down an iPhone, show the Power Off slider using the button combination for your model, Control Center, or Settings, then drag the slider. Face ID models use the side button and either volume button; Home button models use the side button alone.

  1. Press and hold the side button and either volume button at the same time until the sliders appear.
  2. Drag the Power Off slider and wait for the iPhone to turn off.

  2. Drag the Power Off slider.

Shut down without the button combination

Use Control Center

  1. Open Control Center.
  2. Touch and hold the Power button in the top-right corner until the sliders appear.
  3. Drag the Power Off slider.

Use Settings

  1. Open Settings and tap General.
  2. Scroll down and tap Shut Down.
  3. Drag the Power Off slider.

Restart normally or force restart?

A normal restart is a shutdown followed by powering the iPhone on again. Apple’s restart steps vary by model generation:

  • iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, or later: Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the shutdown slider appears.
  • iPhone 6, 7, 8, or SE (2nd or 3rd generation): Press and hold the side button until the slider appears.
  • iPhone SE (1st generation), iPhone 5, or earlier: Press and hold the top button until the slider appears.

For any of these normal restart paths, drag the slider, wait 30 seconds for the device to turn off, then press and hold the side or top button, as appropriate, until the Apple logo appears. See Apple’s restart instructions.

When the iPhone is unresponsive

Force restart is a troubleshooting step for a phone that will not respond to the normal shutdown-and-restart process; it is not the usual way to turn off a working iPhone. Apple Support advises: “If iPhone isn’t responding, and you can’t turn it off then back on, try forcing it to restart.”

  1. Quickly press and release the volume-up button.
  2. Quickly press and release the volume-down button.
  3. Press and hold the side button, then release it when the Apple logo appears.

Apple provides this sequence in its force restart instructions.
