Wix is a stronger fit if you want to start for free, shape a site with drag-and-drop editing, and explore built-in business tools as your needs grow. Squarespace may suit you better if its design approach fits your project or you want to sell through an entry-level plan: Squarespace says its lowest-priced plan can accept payments. Neither platform is the better choice for every site, and the available vendor feature descriptions do not establish that one is easier, faster, or better for SEO.
When Wix is the better choice
Wix’s main advantage is flexibility in how you start and build. Its plans page describes a free starting option, AI-assisted site creation, drag-and-drop editing, templates, hosting, domain registration options, and marketing and SEO features. Those are capabilities Wix advertises; they are not independent evidence that Wix produces better results or is easier to use.

- You want to experiment before paying: Wix offers a free option. A free site is not equivalent to a paid plan: Wix says a Premium plan can connect a custom domain and remove Wix branding.
- You want to adjust a generated or template-based design: Wix describes AI creation from a prompt alongside drag-and-drop refinement, giving you both a starting point and manual editing tools.
- You want site-building and business features in one service: Wix lists hosting and marketing capabilities as well as plan-dependent business tools. Check the exact plan for the functions your site needs.
For a portfolio, informational site, or early-stage business that values trying the builder before committing, those features make Wix a persuasive starting point. They do not settle the decision if selling online is central to the project.
When Squarespace may be the better choice
Squarespace may be a better fit if you prefer the layouts and design guidance it describes, or if you want to take payments without moving to a higher-tier plan. Squarespace’s own comparison page says its lowest-priced plan can accept payments and send invoices. Its Help Center plan guide, last updated September 17, 2026, says products, content, and memberships can be sold on any current website plan.
These are Squarespace-published descriptions, not a neutral head-to-head test. Plan names and features can change, so confirm the live plan details and selling terms before choosing. If you do not need to sell, compare each platform’s editing approach and current total cost against your actual site requirements.
Compare the costs you will actually pay
Do not treat a headline monthly price as a complete comparison. Both vendors’ plan pages can change, and Wix notes that displayed pricing and currencies vary by location; its displayed prices may depend on yearly billing and paying in full. Check the price for your country, billing term, tax, renewal, and the features included at that tier rather than relying on an old starting-price figure.
Also account for your domain separately. Wix says a domain and a site plan are separate services: connecting a custom domain requires both a domain and an eligible Wix site plan. Selected Wix plans may include a one-year domain voucher, subject to eligibility. Squarespace’s comparison page describes a first-year domain offer with annual plans. In either case, check the offer’s conditions and the domain’s renewal cost before treating it as a long-term saving.

Creation and design: compare the workflows, not the promises
Wix describes prompt-based AI site creation, a template library, and drag-and-drop editing. Squarespace describes AI design guidance, customizable layouts, and templates on its comparison page. Both therefore offer ways to begin with a prepared design and customize it, but the feature descriptions alone cannot establish which editor will feel more intuitive to you.
Try the same small task in each service before committing—for example, change a page layout, add a contact section, and adjust the mobile presentation. This lets you judge the editing flow against your own needs without assuming that a vendor’s feature list predicts your experience.

Selling online: check the exact plan and terms
The key difference in the vendor-published plan descriptions is the entry point for selling. Squarespace says its lowest-priced plan accepts payments, and its Help Center says current website plans can support selling products, content, and memberships. Wix’s plans page lists payments and ecommerce features on paid tiers, while its entry Light plan description does not list ecommerce tools.
If you plan to take payments, sell memberships, or invoice clients, verify the exact plan entitlement, transaction or other fees, and availability in your region on the vendor’s live pages. Do not assume that a free Wix site includes selling tools, or that any plan’s feature set will remain unchanged.
Marketing, SEO, and support
Both companies describe built-in marketing and SEO tools. Their pages establish that these features are offered, not that either platform will earn higher rankings or bring more traffic. Content quality, site structure, competition, and other factors affect search results.
Wix lists customer care and support features on its plans page. Squarespace’s comparison describes 24/7 support with location-based restrictions. Check the current support channels and regional availability if access to help is a deciding factor.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Wix if a free starting option, drag-and-drop editing, and a mix of AI-assisted creation and manual changes matter most to you.
- Consider Squarespace if its design approach appeals to you or you want the entry-level selling capability described in its current plan materials.
- For either service, match the plan to the features you need, confirm regional pricing and billing terms, and include domain renewal in your budget.
- Before committing, try the editing workflow and verify current ecommerce, support, and marketing details directly with the vendor.
