Use LiveKit’s Flutter client SDK to receive the lk.transcription text stream and render each transcript segment as one message that updates in place. The higher-level Session API includes a transcription receiver and message history; use TranscriptionStreamReceiver directly when you need to configure or own that receiver yourself.
What you need
- A Flutter app using LiveKit’s
livekit_clientpackage. The official API reference identifies version 2.13.0; check the signatures against the version installed in your project. LiveKit Flutter SDK API reference. - A LiveKit room connection and an agent that produces transcript text. The receiver is intended for agent-powered transcription streams, and the reference says text streams require
livekit-agents >= 1.0.0. TranscriptionStreamReceiver API reference. - Microphone permissions and platform setup for the target platform, following the current Flutter guide. LiveKit Flutter quickstart.
The API reference presents LiveKit Agents as a code-first voice-agent SDK available in Python and Node.js; the agent and Flutter client are separate parts of the integration. LiveKit Flutter SDK API reference.

Choose how to receive transcript messages
Use Session for the usual app flow
Session manages room connection, agent dispatch and message relay. It includes a TranscriptionStreamReceiver listening on lk.transcription by default, and maintains ordered message history for UI observation. This is the simplest path when the session owns the room and the screen needs to display its messages. Session API overview.

Use TranscriptionStreamReceiver for custom handling
Create or manage a receiver directly if you need a custom receiver lifecycle or message handling. Its default topic is lk.transcription, and the topic can be configured. Dispose of the receiver when the UI or session lifecycle that owns it ends. TranscriptionStreamReceiver API reference.

Install and connect
- Add the Flutter package: run
flutter pub add livekit_client, then complete the microphone permission and platform configuration for your target. Follow the LiveKit Flutter quickstart, since the required declarations differ by platform. - Connect to a room and start the agent session: use the connection and session setup for your app. The session API handles room connection, agent dispatch and message relay; the exact method signatures depend on the installed package version. Consult the Flutter API reference for the version you use.
- Observe transcript messages: with
Session, observe its ordered message history. If you use a receiver directly, consume its message stream onlk.transcription(or the configured topic). Check the reference matching your installedlivekit_clientversion for imports and signatures.
Render updates as one row per segment
Transcript delivery can contain multiple updates for the same segment. The receiver aggregates those updates into a ReceivedMessage per transcript segment and uses lk.segment_id as a stable message ID when available. Use that ID as the Flutter list item key and update the matching row as new text arrives, rather than creating a new row for every update. TranscriptionStreamReceiver API reference.
Agent and user updates do not necessarily carry text in the same form: agent transcript chunks are appended until finalization, while user transcript updates may resend the full text for the segment. If you append every user update blindly, previously received words can appear repeatedly. Let the receiver’s aggregation handle updates, or, if processing lower-level updates yourself, distinguish appended chunks from full-segment replacements before changing the displayed text. If the UI needs to distinguish partial from complete text, use the transcription’s finalization metadata exposed through its attributes. Keep the same segment identity while the text is being updated; change its displayed completion state when the metadata indicates finalization. TranscriptionStreamReceiver API reference.

Common implementation pitfalls
- Duplicate rows: using each incoming update as a new list item ignores that several updates can belong to one segment. Key and update rows by the stable segment ID when available.
- Repeated user words: treating a full-text user update as an incremental chunk duplicates content. Account for whether an update appends text or replaces the current segment text.
- No transcript messages: confirm that the agent is producing text on the topic the receiver listens to, that the client is using the intended topic, and that the agent version meets the documented
livekit-agents >= 1.0.0requirement for text streams. - Receiver outlives its owner: when managing a receiver directly, dispose of it at the end of its owning UI or session lifecycle.
