How to Share Your Hiking Route and Emergency Plan

Leave a trusted contact your route, party details, and expected return time. Agree what they should do if you are overdue, update them if plans change, and check in after the hike.

Before a hike, give your route and return time to a trusted person who is not going with you. Agree that they will try to reach you if you are overdue and contact the appropriate authorities with your plan if they cannot. Update them if plans change, then check in when the hike is over.

Who should get your hiking itinerary?

Leave the plan with a trusted contact who is staying behind and can act if you miss your expected return. The National Park Service (NPS) calls this person a “Trusted Contact” and instructs visitors to leave the trip plan with them—not to file it with or rely on the park to monitor it. A written plan gives that contact useful information to pass to responders if needed.

The NPS trip-plan template is intended for day and overnight trips. Longer trips or larger groups may need more detail. A trip plan is not a substitute for any permit your destination requires.

What should I include in a hiking emergency plan?

Make the plan specific enough that someone unfamiliar with your hike can understand where you went, who is with you, and when to act. The NPS recommends trip and contact details, an itinerary, and expected times. These additional details can make the plan more useful, but are not presented as mandatory fields on an NPS form.

  • Party: Names of hikers and a way to reach the group, such as a mobile number. Include an emergency contact if useful.
  • Destination: Park, trail, area, or other identifiable location.
  • Route and itinerary: Planned trail or route, direction of travel, intended stops or landmarks, and any planned overnight location. Note a backup route if you have one.
  • Timing: Departure time, expected return time, and when the contact should consider you overdue.
  • Trailhead and vehicle details: Where you plan to start and, where applicable, where your vehicle will be parked and how it can be identified.
  • Overdue response: Agree in advance that the contact will first try to reach you, then contact local authorities or park officials with the plan if you remain overdue. Give them the appropriate destination-specific contact procedure if you know it.

How do I share my hiking route and keep the plan current?

  1. Write the plan before departure. Send it to your trusted contact in a form they can access while you are away, and make sure they know they are responsible for acting if you do not check in.
  2. Tell them about changes. If the route, destination, group, or expected return time changes, send the updated plan. A stale itinerary may point a response in the wrong direction.
  3. Check in when you finish. Let the contact know the activity is complete so they do not initiate an overdue response unnecessarily.

The NPS advises hikers to communicate changes to their backup plan and check in after the activity in its trip-planning guidance.

Prepare for an emergency on the route

A contact plan works best when the hiking party has also discussed what to do if someone is lost or injured. Review the route and recognizable landmarks before setting out, and carry navigation and communication tools suited to the location and the people using them. NPS lists a map, compass, and GPS among navigation options; choose tools that cover your specific route and that you can use.

Cell service may be unavailable in remote areas. A two-way satellite messenger for hiking may address the need to send and receive messages where cellular coverage is absent; NPS presents this as a possible activity-specific addition, not a universal requirement. A personal locator beacon is another option to consider for a trip with limited communications, but neither equipment nor a written plan guarantees a rescue. NPS discusses navigation and communication preparation in its Ten Essentials guidance and hiking safety guidance.

Know the plan’s limits and check local rules

The NPS states: “The Trip Plan does not guarantee your safety or rescue.” It is information for a trusted contact and, if needed, responders; it cannot ensure that help will arrive quickly or that conditions will permit a rescue. Before leaving, check current trail conditions, closures, permit requirements, and destination-specific instructions. NPS advice applies to U.S. national parks and does not replace local procedures or rules elsewhere.
