MSI’s intended airflow path is bottom to top, with hot air leaving through the top. A sensible starting layout is to keep those intakes and add top exhaust fans—or use a top-mounted AIO radiator if your build calls for liquid cooling. The right fan count depends on your CPU, GPU, and cooling setup; filling every mount is not automatically better.
Check the existing airflow before adding fans
- Inspect the bottom intakes. The MEG MAESTRO 900R has three pre-installed 160 mm ARGB reverse-blade fans at the bottom, configured as intakes. Make sure all three spin and that the elevated base is not blocked by carpet, the floor, or nearby objects. MSI describes the base as the cool-air intake path. MSI’s case overview and specifications identify the stock fans and layout.
- Confirm fan direction. Check the airflow arrows on each fan or its manufacturer instructions rather than judging by appearance. Keep the bottom fans as intake and use top-mounted fans as exhaust for the initial setup.
- Take a baseline. Record CPU and GPU temperatures, along with fan noise or speeds if available, during a repeatable workload. Use the same workload and conditions after any change; that is the practical way to tell whether the change helped your components.
Choose a fan layout that matches the build
Air-cooled system
Keep the stock bottom intakes and, if temperatures or noise warrant additional airflow, add top fans as exhaust. MSI’s representative described pairing the three bottom intakes with top exhaust fans as a balanced starting configuration. This is manufacturer guidance, not a controlled thermal test or a guarantee that extra fans will lower temperatures in every build. Recheck temperatures and noise after installation.

AIO or custom loop
MSI lists radiator mounting at the top and bottom up to 420 mm, and at the side up to 360 mm. Those nominal sizes do not guarantee that a particular radiator, its fans, the motherboard, and other components will all fit together. Check the case manual’s clearance tables for your exact configuration before buying, including motherboard tray orientation, heatsinks, memory, GPU, and tubing.
Do not populate every mount by default
MSI advertises support for up to 14 120 mm fans, but that is a mounting capacity, not a recommended count for every PC. Add fans only when your measurements, temperatures, or noise goals justify them, then compare results using the same workload.

- High performance cooling fan, 120x120x25 mm, 12V, 4-pin PWM, max. 1700 RPM, max. 25.1 dB(A), >150,000 h MTTF
- Renowned NF-P12 high-end 120x25mm 12V fan, more than 100 awards and recommendations from international computer hardware websites and magazines, hundreds of thousands of satisfied users
- Pressure-optimised blade design with outstanding quietness of operation: high static pressure and strong CFM for air-based CPU coolers, water cooling radiators or low-noise chassis ventilation
- 1700rpm 4-pin PWM version with excellent balance of performance and quietness, supports automatic motherboard speed control (powerful airflow when required, virtually silent at idle)
- Streamlined redux edition: proven Noctua quality at an attractive price point, wide range of optional accessories (anti-vibration mounts, S-ATA adaptors, y-splitters, extension cables, etc.)
Check clearances before choosing a radiator
Top-radiator clearance changes with the orientation of the motherboard tray. In a public case AMA, MSI representative MSI_Patrick said that a top-mounted 360 mm radiator plus 120 mm fans must have a combined thickness under 80 mm when the rear I/O faces left or right, and under 60 mm when the rear I/O faces up or down. Treat these as configuration-specific limits and consult the manual for the complete clearance tables and your exact parts. MSI’s MEG MAESTRO 900R AMA also notes that the case supports a four-way rotatable tray and vertical GPU installation; changing either can alter clearances and how well the default airflow arrangement applies.
Compare cooling options with the same workload
| What to compare | How to evaluate it |
|---|---|
| CPU and GPU temperatures | Run the same workload before and after each change, using consistent conditions. |
| Noise | Compare noise at the fan speeds needed to maintain the temperatures you want. |
| Fit and clearance | Check radiator thickness, tray orientation, motherboard heatsinks, memory, GPU, and tubing against the manual. |
| Complexity | Account for the purchase, installation, and maintenance involved in an AIO or custom loop versus air cooling. |
MSI’s published material establishes mounting support and design intent, but does not show that one supported layout outperforms another in a particular system. No temperature reduction can be promised without measurements on that build.

- 【High Performance Cooling Fan】 Automatic speed control of the motherboard through the 4PIN PWM fan cable interface, which can determine the speed according to the temperature of the motherboard, with a maximum speed of 1550RPM. Configured with up to 55cm of cable for PWM series control of fans, ideal for cases and CPU coolers.
- 【Quality Bearings】The carefully developed quality S-FDB bearings solve the problem of pc cooling fan blade shaking in lifting mode, keeping fan noise to a minimum while providing maximum cooling performance when needed and extending the life of the fan.
- [Excellent LED light] The high-brightness LED atomizing argb fan blade can effectively reflect the light, making the ARGB lighting effect softer, and it matches the cooler and case more perfectly. Up to 17 modes of light effects with ARGB support, color can be managed and synchronized through the port on motherboard.
- 【Silent Fan Size】 Model: TL-C12C-S X5, Size: 120*120*25mm, Speed: 1550RPM±10%, Noise ≤ 25.6dBA Connector: 4pin pwm, Current: 0.20A, Air Pressure: 1.53mm H2O, Air Flow: 66.17CFM, Higher air flow for improved cooling performance.
- 【Perfect Match】The PC fan can be used not only as a case fan, but is also suitable for use with a cpu cooler to create a cooling effect together, which can take away the dry heat from the case and the high temperature generated by the CPU in operation, allowing for maximum cooling; Ideal for cases, radiators and CPU coolers.
Replacing a stock fan or buying extras
MSI’s representative described the included 160 mm reverse-blade fans as custom-fitted and did not provide standalone retail purchase details in the AMA. If one needs replacement, confirm availability and compatibility with MSI or the retailer rather than assuming the original fan is sold separately. For added fans, MSI lists 120 mm support at multiple positions; choose size and count for the mount, tray orientation, and component clearances in your build.
