For the strongest built-in controls, sign the tablet into a supervised child Google Account and manage it with Google Family Link. Then set app and screen-time rules, restrict Google Play content and purchases, and check for other tablet profiles the child could switch to. Android menus and Family Link features vary by tablet, so confirm each setting on the device; filters reduce access but do not block every unsuitable page or app.
Check Android version and Family Link support
On the tablet, open Settings and look for About tablet or About device to find its Android version. Menu names vary by manufacturer. Google’s general Family Link guidance lists Android 6.0 and later for a child’s supervised device, but app-specific time limits require Android 7 or later and do not apply to system apps. A tablet may run a supported Android version yet lack a particular control, so check the actual settings and the tablet maker’s support information if a feature is missing.

Family Link setup and controls also depend on account and country eligibility. The supervising parent needs a Google Account, must meet the applicable adult-age requirement, and must live in the same country as the child; age rules vary by country. For children below the applicable age of consent, Google says a parent must manage their Google Account. A supervised account is the foundation for managing the child’s Google account and compatible Android device. If the tablet is new, Google’s setup flow lets a parent create an account for a child and choose settings. If the tablet is already configured, Google’s instructions say to remove existing accounts and delete apps, photos, or other data the child should not access before adding the child’s account. Account-menu labels can differ by Android version and manufacturer.

Follow Google’s instructions to create a Google Account for a child. After the child’s account is signed in on the tablet, use the Family Link app on the parent’s device to set up supervision. Google notes that its services generally are not designed for children, so supervision does not make every Google service child-specific.
Manage screen time and app access in Family Link
In the parent’s Family Link app, select the child and open Screen time. Under Time limits, configure a daily limit and, where available, a bedtime or downtime schedule. Choose a family rule suited to the child and how the tablet is used; these controls provide scheduling options, not a universal recommended number of hours.

For individual apps, open App limits to set an allowed duration, block an app, or mark it as unlimited time where supported. Google’s app-limit guidance applies to Android 7 and later and excludes system apps. Unlimited-time options have additional limitations, including an exception for devices running Google Kids Space. Family Link can also let a parent review app use, approve or block app downloads, and change app permissions. Review permission requests and installed apps periodically, especially after adding an app or changing account controls. A control being available in Family Link does not mean every app or service is designed for children.

Restrict Google Play content and purchases
In Family Link, select the child and open the Google Play content controls. You can set the highest allowed rating for apps and games, movies, TV, and books. These ratings limit what can be downloaded or purchased through Google Play; they are not a guarantee that restricted material will disappear from search results or direct links. Content-filter options may also vary by country.
Purchase approvals apply only to purchases made through Google Play’s billing system. Google says apps downloaded before restrictions were added may remain viewable; if one is unsuitable, block it on the supervised Android device. Review the settings if the child’s account controls change. Google’s Google Play content restriction instructions explain the available filters and their limits.

Check for other user profiles
If the tablet supports multiple users, check whether the child can switch to an adult or other unsupervised profile. Family Link settings for the child’s account do not apply to profiles where that account is not signed in. Put a password or PIN on any profile the child should not use. Whether a particular tablet supports multiple profiles, and how to lock them, depends on its manufacturer and Android version. Add Android’s on-device parental controls if available
Android may also offer a separate, device-level Parental controls section. Search Settings for “Parental controls”; the path and available options vary by Android release and tablet. Google’s documented controls can include a PIN, daily limits, downtime, app limits, blocked apps, web-content filters, and app-store filters. Treat this as an additional local layer, not a substitute for checking which Google Account is signed in.

The documented PIN must be at least four digits. Google recommends adding a recovery account so a forgotten PIN can be reset. If the setting is absent, check the tablet maker’s support information rather than assuming the device has the feature. Google’s Android parental controls instructions describe the device-level options.

The two approaches address different layers: Family Link is account-based, while Android’s documented parental controls are configured on the device. Use the controls the tablet actually supports, and verify their effect from the child’s profile.
