For someone who lives outside your household, use the streaming service’s official extra-member option if your plan, country and billing arrangement allow it. Don’t assume a family relationship, a separate profile or sharing your password makes access permitted. Keep your main password private, check the service’s current rules and use its own travel or verification process when you’re away from home.
First check whether the viewer is in your household
Streaming services set their own household rules; there is no universal rule that applies to every subscription. A household usually refers to people living at the account holder’s primary residence under that service’s definition, not everyone related to the account holder.

Netflix says an account is for one household, defined around devices connected to the internet at the main residence. Disney’s Singapore Subscriber Agreement, updated October 17, 2025, similarly restricts sharing outside the household unless the subscription tier permits it; its definition centers on the primary residence and the people who live there. These are service- and region-specific examples, not a substitute for checking the terms that apply to your account.

A profile is a way to organize viewing within an account. Creating one for someone at another address does not, by itself, establish that the service permits that person to use the subscription.

For another residence, look for an official extra-member option
Check the account’s sharing settings for an Extra Member or equivalent option. Availability can depend on the service, subscription tier, country and how the subscription is billed. A plan purchased through an app store, telecom provider, bundle or other partner may have different eligibility or setup rules. Confirm the details in your account before promising someone access.

Keep the main account password private
Use separate credentials issued through the service’s official extra-member setup when available, rather than handing over the account holder’s password. Disney’s Singapore Subscriber Agreement says subscribers are responsible for keeping their username and password confidential and secure, and for activity on or through the account.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the service’s official account or security settings.
- Review the devices or sessions signed in to the account, and remove ones you do not recognize using the service’s controls.
- If you suspect unauthorized access, follow the service’s account-recovery and security steps, including changing the password where instructed.
Never send a password, one-time verification code or recovery link to someone as a workaround for an access restriction. A password manager can help you store your own unique passwords, but it cannot make a sharing arrangement permitted under a service’s terms.

Travel is different from sharing with another household
Netflix’s Australia announcement on May 23, 2023 said household members could use Netflix at home, on the go or on holiday. That statement is regional and dated; use the current travel instructions and verification prompts shown by your own service. A trip does not automatically mean that lending access to someone at a separate residence is allowed.
When a service asks you to verify a device or location during travel, follow its official prompt. Don’t use a VPN or other location-disguising method to evade household checks; it does not establish permission under the service’s rules.
