How many seasons of Foundation are there?
Three seasons have aired. Apple’s series page dates the start of season three to July 11, 2025, and its season-four announcement says the third-season finale debuted globally on September 12, 2025. Season three is the latest aired season documented by those sources as of October 4, 2026. Apple’s series page and renewal announcement provide the release details.

Is Foundation over? What happens at the season-three finale?
No. Apple announced the season-four renewal on September 11, 2025, and said production was set to begin in early 2026. The season-three finale, “The Darkness,” is therefore not a series finale. Apple’s announcement describes a spoiler-light closing setup: Gaal and the Second Foundation head toward the Mule as the Emperor’s legacy takes a catastrophic blow.

What order should I watch the episodes in?
Watch the seasons and episodes in the official numbered order: start with season one, episode one, finish that season, and continue through each subsequent season. Apple’s episode listing groups episodes by season and begins with “The Emperor’s Peace,” followed by “Preparing to Live,” “The Mathematician’s Ghost,” and “Barbarians at the Gate.” There is no need to rearrange episodes into a flashback or timeline order.
Do I need to read the books before watching?
No. Apple describes the series as based on Isaac Asimov’s Foundation novels, but the television adaptation changes and rearranges material rather than matching one novel to each season. A July 2025 What to Watch guide characterizes the first three seasons as drawing on the first three main novels while stressing that the mapping is not one book per season. Treat that as an editorial overview, not an official season-by-season adaptation guide. The books can add context, but they are not a prerequisite to following the show.

For a first read that preserves the order in which the central novels were published—and their original reveals—read the seven central books in publication order:

- Second Foundation
- Foundation’s Edge
- Foundation and Earth
- Prelude to Foundation
- Forward the Foundation
The first three form the original trilogy; the next two are sequels, and the final two are prequels. Penguin Random House’s Foundation catalog lists the titles.

Publication order or chronological order?

Chronological order is a valid alternative, but it changes what you learn and when. The broader Robot and Galactic Empire novels connect to Asimov’s wider fictional future; they are not required to begin the central Foundation sequence.
