A family group supports up to eight Nintendo Account users, so every member gets the plan’s benefits without buying a separate individual subscription.
For United States pricing listed by Nintendo, the standard Family Membership costs $34.99 for 12 months and the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Family Membership costs $79.99 for 12 months. At eight participating accounts, those totals work out to about $4.37 or $10.00 per person for a year before taxes, payment fees, currency conversion or local-price differences.

What you are actually sharing
Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership is attached to a Nintendo Account family group rather than to one console. The purchaser invites other Nintendo Accounts into that group. After an invitation is accepted, Nintendo applies the family membership automatically to every account in the group.
The group can contain up to eight Nintendo Account users. They do not need to share one Switch console, and the Nintendo Account website—not the eShop on an individual console—is where the administrator manages invitations and membership.

Who can buy and who can benefit
Nintendo states that the purchaser can be 18 or older and does not have to be the family-group administrator. The important requirement for cost sharing is that every participant has a Nintendo Account and is added to the same family group.
What “family” means here
Nintendo’s family-group system is an account-management feature; it does not require every participant to be related or to live in the same household. Friends can split the cost by joining the same family group, provided each person uses a Nintendo Account and accepts the invitation sent to that account’s email address.

How to split a family plan with fewer than eight people
Divide the actual purchase total by the number of accounts that will use the membership. For example, a four-account group would divide the standard plan’s $34.99 total by four, while a three-account group would divide the Expansion Pack plan’s $79.99 total by three. If the purchaser pays tax or a card fee, decide whether to divide that extra amount as well.
| Participating accounts | Standard family plan: $34.99 ÷ members | Expansion Pack family plan: $79.99 ÷ members |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | About $17.50 each | About $40.00 each |
| 3 | About $11.66 each | About $26.66 each |
| 4 | About $8.75 each | About $20.00 each |
| 5 | About $7.00 each | About $16.00 each |
| 6 | About $5.83 each | About $13.33 each |
| 7 | About $5.00 each | About $11.43 each |
| 8 | About $4.37 each | About $10.00 each |
These rounded amounts are planning figures based on the listed US annual prices. The purchaser should calculate the final reimbursement from the receipt, then round in a way that accounts for any remainder of a cent.
Choosing between the two family tiers
Both tiers cover the same maximum of eight Nintendo Accounts. The decision is whether the group needs the Expansion Pack benefits badly enough to pay the higher annual total.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose the standard Family Membership when
- Members mainly need the core Nintendo Switch Online service and do not expect to use the Expansion Pack libraries or included add-on content.
- Keeping the annual contribution as low as possible matters more than access to the higher tier.
- Some participants would not use classic-game catalogs, so charging everyone for the upgrade would create an uneven value split.
Choose + Expansion Pack when
- The group specifically wants Nintendo’s Expansion Pack classic-game collections.
- Members plan to use eligible add-on content included with the higher tier.
- Everyone agrees that the additional annual amount is worthwhile; at eight accounts, the listed difference is about $5.63 more per person than the standard plan before taxes and fees.
Do not describe the Expansion Pack as a better deal for every group. Its value depends on whether the people paying into the group will actually use the extra libraries and add-on content.

How to create the group and invite everyone
Use a computer or smart device for the account-management steps. The purchaser must sign in to the Nintendo Account website at accounts.nintendo.com.
- Sign in to the purchaser’s Nintendo Account. Use the account that will buy or already owns the family membership.
- Open Family group. This page shows the current members and identifies the family-group administrator.
- Select Add a member. Choose Invite someone to your family group rather than creating a new Nintendo Account for the person.
- Enter the invitee’s Nintendo Account email address. Nintendo says the invitation must use the same email address entered by the administrator for that Nintendo Account. A typo or a different address can prevent the invitation from applying to the intended account.
- Have the invitee accept the invitation. The recipient follows the invitation message and confirms participation with the correct Nintendo Account.
- Verify the member appears in Family group. Once accepted, the account should show in the group and the family membership applies automatically.
Nintendo describes the product as allowing one purchaser to “share them with up to seven other members,” which is why the maximum group size is eight accounts total, including the purchaser when that account is participating.
What to send each participant before inviting them
- The exact email address attached to their Nintendo Account.
- The family tier being purchased and the annual amount each person is expected to reimburse.
- The payment deadline and the method you will use to collect money.
- A note that Nintendo’s family group is account-based, so each person should accept the invitation with their own Nintendo Account.
How to split the payment fairly
Nintendo documents the subscription and invitation process, but it does not provide a built-in collection tool that automatically bills each family-group member for a share. The purchaser therefore pays Nintendo and collects reimbursements separately.

A practical collection method
- Count the accounts that have committed to participate before purchasing.
- Check the final checkout total, including any tax or payment charge.
- Divide that total by the committed account count, or use a different agreed split if one person is covering a larger share.
- Collect the money before purchase or set a clear due date immediately afterward.
- Keep the receipt and the list of members for the entire 12-month term.
An annual transfer before purchase is usually easier to track than monthly micro-payments. If someone joins after the purchase, agree whether that person reimburses a prorated amount, pays an equal annual share, or waits until the next renewal. Nintendo does not set those private arrangements.

What not to promise
Do not promise that Nintendo will refund an individual participant if the group changes, or that Nintendo will mediate a dispute between friends. The account holder who makes the purchase remains responsible for the subscription transaction, while reimbursement terms are an agreement among participants.
Family membership versus separate individual memberships
To compare family sharing with individual plans, multiply the individual 12-month price shown for each participant in your country by the number of people who need service, then compare that total with the applicable family price. The family option becomes more attractive as more accounts participate, because one family purchase covers all eight available positions.
Use the family plan’s actual purchase total—not an advertised pre-tax figure—when comparing. Country, duration and currency affect Nintendo pricing, so the US family figures above should not be applied to another region without checking the local Nintendo price table.
When individual memberships may be simpler
- Only one person needs Nintendo Switch Online.
- Participants do not want to coordinate a shared administrator or reimbursement schedule.
- A participant needs control over a separate renewal date or payment method.
- The group cannot agree on whether the Expansion Pack upgrade is worth paying for.
When the family plan usually fits better
- Two or more people already intend to maintain service for the same year.
- The participants trust one person to make the purchase and manage invitations.
- The group wants one annual renewal rather than several individual transactions.
Existing individual memberships and overlapping time
An individual Nintendo Switch Online membership and a family membership do not simply combine into one longer subscription. Nintendo says that when an individually subscribed account joins a family group, it uses the longest applicable period rather than adding the two periods together.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

Before switching someone into a family group, check how much individual time remains and agree on how that person’s cost will be handled. Buying a family plan does not turn the unused individual period into extra family-plan months for the whole group.
What happens if the purchaser leaves
If the purchaser leaves the family group, other members lose Nintendo Switch Online features until they are covered again. Nintendo specifically includes Save Data Cloud backup among the affected features. This makes the purchaser’s account a critical part of the arrangement.
Ways to reduce that risk
- Choose an administrator who expects to keep the Nintendo Account and payment method active for the full term.
- Record the renewal date and tell every participant who currently controls the subscription.
- If the purchaser must leave, arrange replacement coverage promptly rather than assuming the remaining members stay covered.
- Do not remove the purchaser casually while troubleshooting another family-group issue.
Changing the private reimbursement arrangement does not itself transfer the subscription. The family-group status and Nintendo Account roles must be handled through Nintendo’s account system.
Common invitation and setup problems
The invitee cannot find or accept the invitation
- Confirm that the administrator entered the email address attached to the invitee’s Nintendo Account, not a second contact address.
- Ask the invitee to check spam, junk and filtered folders.
- Have the invitee open the invitation while signed in to the intended Nintendo Account.
- Recheck the Family group page to ensure the account was not already added.
The account still shows no Nintendo Switch Online access
- Verify that the invitation was accepted rather than merely sent.
- Confirm that the account appears in the purchaser’s Family group.
- Check that the membership is active and has not expired.
- Restart the affected Switch and open the service again after the family-group change has appeared on the account.
The group is full
Eight Nintendo Accounts is the family-group limit. Remove an account only after confirming that person no longer needs the membership, because removal changes their access and may affect the group’s reimbursement plan.
A participant wants to use a different email address
The invitation must target the email address associated with that participant’s Nintendo Account. If the person wants to use another address, they should resolve the Nintendo Account email details first, then have the administrator send the invitation to the correct address.
Annual renewal and group-management checklist
Use this checklist before each renewal or whenever membership changes:
- Confirm the current Nintendo price for the chosen country and duration.
- Count active participants and verify that the total does not exceed eight accounts.
- Ask whether the group still wants the standard tier or Expansion Pack content.
- Identify the account that will make the purchase and confirm that its holder plans to remain in the family group.
- Recalculate each reimbursement from the final total, including applicable taxes or fees.
- Confirm every participant’s Nintendo Account email before sending invitations.
- Save the purchase receipt and renewal date.
- Tell members how a late joiner, departure or missed payment will be handled.
Bottom-line decision
For a coordinated group of two to eight Nintendo Account users, one Family Membership is the straightforward way to share Nintendo Switch Online costs: buy the appropriate 12-month tier, invite each account through Family group, and divide the real purchase total among the participants. The standard US price is $34.99 per year and the + Expansion Pack price is $79.99 per year, but the right choice depends on local pricing and whether the group will use the higher tier’s additional content.
