Configure long-term memory strategies and connect both Strands agents to that resource through the AgentCore Memory session manager. The chat and voice frontends can then use separate transport and authorization paths while drawing on shared user context.
This is an architecture assembled from documented AWS and Amplify patterns—not a promise that sharing a resource automatically handles identity mapping, access control, or memory policy.

How shared memory works across voice and chat
AgentCore Memory distinguishes a memory resource from the identifiers used to organize interactions with it. In the shared-memory design, the memory ID points both agents to the same resource; the actor ID groups a person’s memory across channels; and the session ID identifies a particular conversation. AWS documents these fields separately in its Memory getting-started guide and Strands integration guide.
That distinction matters: keep the actor ID stable for the same signed-in person, but choose session IDs according to the continuity your product intends. A voice call and a later chat can use separate sessions while still sharing actor-level facts and preferences. If a person explicitly resumes the same interaction, your session policy can instead resume that session. Neither identifier is a substitute for authenticating the person or checking their permission to access data.

AgentCore can retain interaction events as short-term memory, but long-term records are produced when strategies are configured. AWS describes semantic, summary, and user-preference strategies in its memory strategies documentation. Its overview describes the service as enabling agents to remember past interactions for more context-aware and personalized conversations (Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Memory).
Plan identity, sessions, and retrieval before connecting agents
Derive actor identity from a trusted sign-in
At a backend boundary, validate the Cognito token—or the token from the identity provider you use—and derive the actor ID from the verified identity. Pass that stable ID to both the voice and chat agents. Mapping a verified Cognito subject to an actor ID is a sound implementation choice, not a literal mapping mandated by AWS. Do not accept an arbitrary actor ID sent by a client as proof that the caller owns that user’s memories.
Make session continuity an explicit product decision
Use a distinct session ID for each conversation when you want channel-specific interaction history. A convention that identifies the channel can help with tracing, but session IDs should not contain sensitive personal data. If users can deliberately resume an interaction in another channel, define how the application validates and selects that session instead of assuming the shared actor ID does it for you.

Choose which memories each turn can retrieve
Retrieval scope is part of the agent’s behavior. The Strands example configures retrieval by namespace and supports per-namespace settings. It illustrates session-specific summaries under /summaries/{actorId}/{sessionId}/ and user-level preferences and facts under /preferences/{actorId}/ and /facts/{actorId}/. Use namespaces and retrieval configuration to provide useful context without injecting every stored record into every turn; these example paths illustrate the pattern and should be aligned with the strategies and configuration you actually create.
Create one memory resource and configure long-term strategies
- Create an AgentCore Memory resource and wait until its status is active before sending events. AWS demonstrates resource setup in its getting-started guide.
- Configure strategies for the durable information you want agents to use, such as semantic facts, user preferences, or session summaries. A resource with no strategies can retain events but does not generate long-term memory records; see AWS’s strategy documentation.
- Select a strategy implementation based on the control and operational effort you need. AWS describes the broad trade-offs as follows; it does not establish a current price comparison in the cited material.
| Strategy approach | What it offers | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in managed strategies | Managed extraction and memory handling with less customization work. | Less control than overriding prompts or managing the strategy yourself; AWS describes built-ins as having higher storage cost than the alternatives. |
| Built-in strategies with overrides | Customization of prompts within the managed pipeline. | Offers less end-to-end control than a self-managed strategy. |
| Self-managed strategies | Control over extraction, consolidation, and schemas. | Requires infrastructure and ongoing maintenance. |
For current configuration details, consult the AgentCore Memory strategies guide rather than assuming an example configuration is a universal policy.
Attach both Strands agents to the shared resource
Configure each agent’s AgentCoreMemoryConfig with the same memory ID and authenticated actor ID. Set its session ID according to the interaction policy, and specify the namespaces and retrieval settings that agent should use. Then create an AgentCoreMemorySessionManager and pass it to the Strands Agent. AWS documents this integration and its configuration pattern in the Strands SDK memory guide.

- Music to your ears: With nearly 3x the bass versus Echo Dot (2022 release), it fits beautifully in any space, delivering your personal sound stage with deep bass and enhanced clarity. Listen to streaming services, such as Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, and SiriusXM. Encore!
- Do more with device pairing: Connect compatible Echo smart speakers and smart displays in different rooms, or pair with a second Echo Dot Max to enjoy even richer sound
- Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
The voice and chat agents can use different prompts, tools, and turn handling; sharing a memory resource does not require identical agent behavior. It does require consistent identity mapping and compatible memory and retrieval configuration if both channels are expected to use the same user context.

Connect the authenticated chat experience with Amplify Gen 2
Amplify Gen 2’s Agent Block guide documents a Cognito-authenticated chat path that streams responses and persists conversations. The guide checks that a conversation belongs to the authenticated user before returning its history. Preserve that authorization check: a conversation ID by itself does not authorize a history read. See the Amplify Agent Block documentation.
Using the Agent Block for chat alongside AgentCore Memory for cross-channel context composes two documented patterns; the Agent Block page is not itself an end-to-end example of sharing AgentCore memories between chat and voice. Connect the chat agent’s backend to the same memory resource and pass the trusted actor identity there rather than treating a client-provided conversation or actor ID as authorization.

Connect voice through AgentCore Runtime
For browser or mobile voice, AWS documents an Amplify-hosted application that authenticates with Cognito and opens a SigV4-signed WebSocket connection to AgentCore Runtime. Its voice architecture routes model tool calls through Lambda and AgentCore Gateway. A Strands BidiAgent is one option for the voice agent; AWS describes it as handling stream lifecycle, tool calls, and session handling. The AWS voice application guidance and the AWS Strands voice article provide the respective architecture examples.
Runtime documents WebSocket and WebRTC for bidirectional streaming. Choose based on the client’s media needs, network conditions, and operational requirements, and check current regional support in the bidirectional streaming guide.
| Transport | Documented fit | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| WebSocket | Full-duplex text and audio streaming; AWS’s voice guidance uses a signed WebSocket between Amplify and Runtime. | Assess the message protocol, signing and authentication, buffering, and interruption behavior. |
| WebRTC | Real-time media for browser and mobile voice or video. | Assess UDP media paths, relay and network requirements, and current Runtime and regional support. |
AWS’s WebRTC announcement dated March 20, 2026, listed support in 14 AWS Regions at that time. That is an availability count, not a performance measure, and the supported-region list can change (AWS WebRTC announcement).

Design for asynchronous memory and separate current facts from personal context
Long-term memory extraction is asynchronous. A voice event may be written before the resulting long-term insight is ready, so a chat turn immediately afterward should not be promised access to every detail from that utterance. Keep the active channel’s turn context available for its immediate response, and make the product resilient when a newly written event has not yet become retrievable. AWS describes the processing distinction in its memory types documentation.
Use long-term memory for personal history and session context, not as the authority for changing external facts. AgentCore’s comparison positions memory for personal or session context and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) for current authoritative information from repositories. For schedules, policies, inventory, or other changeable facts, retrieve from the relevant current source instead of relying on a remembered conversation (AgentCore Memory versus RAG).
- Decide which kinds of personal information are appropriate to retain and what each strategy should extract.
- Keep retrieval targeted to the namespaces and context each agent needs.
- Where appropriate for the product, give users a way to inspect or correct retained personal context; this is a product-design recommendation, not a complete user-control policy prescribed by the cited AWS pages.
Validate the complete cross-channel path
Before release, verify the behavior at the same authenticated-user boundary used in production:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Sign in as one user, create a voice session, and confirm the event is written under the intended actor and session.
- After allowing for asynchronous extraction, start a separate chat session for that same user and check that the intended long-term memory is retrievable.
- Repeat with a different authenticated user and confirm that the first user’s memories and conversation history are not exposed.
- Check that the intended summary, fact, and preference namespaces are retrieved, and that irrelevant records are not broadly injected into turns.
- Test behavior when a new memory has not yet been extracted, when a conversation history request is unauthorized, and when the chosen voice transport cannot connect.
These checks assess the application’s identity, authorization, retrieval, and asynchronous behavior; the cited documentation provides no empirical latency or quality benchmark for this combined architecture. AWS and Amplify documentation accessed for this article was current as of October 4, 2026; service APIs, package names, permissions, supported models, and regional availability can change.
