To share digital PlayStation games, enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the one PS5 your family will use. Sign in there with the account that bought the games, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play, and choose Enable. After the games are downloaded, other people can play them from their own PSN profiles, including when that PS5 is offline.
The purchase remains tied to the buying account. Console Sharing gives other users access on that specific PS5; it does not transfer ownership to their accounts or activate every benefit of the purchaser’s account.

What Console Sharing and Offline Play does
PlayStation’s PS5 sharing feature is a console entitlement, not an account-to-account transfer. The purchasing account designates one PS5 as its shared console. Anyone who uses that PS5 can play games and use media that the purchasing account has purchased and downloaded. Sony says this access continues when the console is offline.

The designation applies to users of the enabled PS5, so each family member should sign in with an individual PSN profile. Their own profiles keep saves, permissions, trophies and purchases attributable to the right person instead of placing the whole family’s activity under the buyer’s login.

The buying account remains the license holder. A relative signing in on a different PS5 does not receive a permanent copy of the license merely because the family console is enabled. If your household changes which PS5 is shared, you must move the designation rather than enabling it on several consoles at once.
What you need before setup
- A purchasing adult account: The PS5 must be signed in with the PSN account that bought the digital games.
- The family PS5: This is the console on which other household users will play. It needs to be available for the initial sign-in and downloads.
- Downloaded games: Console Sharing covers games the purchasing account has purchased and downloaded. Download them from that account’s Game Library.
- Separate user profiles: Create or use an individual PSN profile for every adult and child who will play.
- Optional PlayStation Plus: A membership is not required for ordinary sharing of purchased games. It is relevant only when you need Plus features such as online multiplayer or a Plus catalog title.
- Family controls, if children play: Add child accounts to PlayStation Family Management and configure age, spending, communication and play-time rules before handing over access.
Decide which PS5 should be the shared one before activating the feature. Sony permits Console Sharing and Offline Play on one PS5 at a time for the purchasing account. That choice determines where other local profiles receive the buyer’s downloaded-game access.
Enable game sharing on the family PS5
- Sign in with the buyer’s account. On the PS5 your family will use, add the PSN account that purchased the games and sign in. Do not use a child’s profile for this activation.
- Open the sharing setting. Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Choose Enable. If the screen offers Disable, that account is already sharing on this PS5. If another PS5 is currently designated, disable sharing there first, then return to this console and enable it.
- Download the games. Still signed in as the purchaser, open Game Library, select the purchased titles and start their downloads. A title that has not been downloaded to this PS5 is not available for another local user to launch offline.
- Install updates and required content. Let each game finish installing. Some games can require their own online service or subscription for network features even though the base game is available through Console Sharing.
- Switch to each person’s profile. Sign out of the purchasing account or use the profile switcher, then have every family member sign in with their own PSN account and launch the installed game.
Do not leave the purchasing adult’s login as the family’s everyday profile. The buyer needs to remain available for license checks and downloads, but routine play should happen under the individual accounts.

- Turn on the designated PS5 and choose the player’s own profile.
- Open the game from the home screen or Game Library.
- Use that profile’s own save data and settings.
- When an online mode is selected, meet the game’s network requirements and any parental-control limits on the account.
Offline play is the main advantage of the setting. The designated PS5 can launch the buyer’s downloaded games without an active internet connection because the console has been authorized for that account. Other profiles do not need to sign in as the purchaser each time they play on that console.
Access is still subject to the status of the underlying license. A game removed from a qualifying subscription catalog, a lapsed membership, or a title bought by a different account can appear unavailable even though Console Sharing itself is enabled.
What is shared, and what stays personal
| Item | What the family gets on the enabled PS5 | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Purchased digital games | Other users can play games purchased and downloaded by the owner. | The digital license remains associated with the purchasing account. |
| Downloaded PlayStation media | Users of that PS5 can use the owner’s purchased and downloaded media under the console-sharing authorization. | This is access on the designated console, not a transfer to each user’s account. |
| Offline access | Installed eligible games can be played while the enabled PS5 is offline. | A title may still require its own online service for multiplayer or other network functions. |
| Player profiles and saves | Each person can launch the game from their own PSN profile and keep activity attributable to that profile. | Do not use the purchaser’s profile as a shared family identity. |
| Another PS5 | It is not automatically covered just because the buyer owns the game. | The buyer must manage which single PS5 is designated for console sharing. |
| Account-level services | Only the benefits Sony identifies as shareable can be used by other profiles on the enabled PS5. | Several account actions remain exclusive to the subscriber or purchaser. |
Do you need PlayStation Plus?
No membership is needed to share ordinary digital purchases on the designated PS5. PlayStation Plus matters when the game or feature comes from the subscription or when a player needs an online service covered by Plus.
Sony says selected Plus benefits can be shared on one PS5 with Console Sharing enabled. The exact plan and catalog eligibility still matter, and Sony can change catalog contents. Check the current benefits and the membership plan before relying on a subscription title for family play.

| Plus benefit | Can it be shared on the enabled PS5? | Condition or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Online multiplayer | Yes, where Sony permits sharing. | Parental controls and the individual game’s online requirements still apply. |
| Games bought with a Plus discount | The downloaded purchased game can be played on the shared PS5. | The purchase itself remains on the account that bought it; another profile cannot use the discount to make its own purchase. |
| Downloaded Monthly Plus games | Yes, for users of the enabled PS5 while the membership and eligibility continue. | The subscriber must keep an active membership, and the title must remain eligible. |
| Catalog games included with the plan | They may be shared on the enabled PS5. | The membership tier must include the title, and access ends if the plan or catalog eligibility ends. |
| Buying discounted PlayStation Store products | No. | Store discounts belong to the subscribing account. |
| Redeeming Plus games on another account | No. | Another profile cannot claim the subscriber’s Plus entitlement as its own. |
| Online storage | No. | Cloud storage remains personal to the subscriber. |
| Automatic patch downloads | No. | This account feature is not transferred to other profiles. |
| Early access to time-limited game trials | No. | Trial access remains tied to the eligible account. |
A Plus game is therefore different from a permanently purchased digital game. When a membership expires or a catalog game leaves the plan, local profiles lose access unless the title is purchased separately or the membership is restored with the required eligibility.
Set up adult and child accounts safely
Use PlayStation Family Management instead of sharing one adult login. Each adult can have an independent PSN account, while a parent or guardian creates and supervises child accounts. This arrangement lets the family apply rules to the child without hiding which account owns the game or recording everyone’s activity under one name.
Controls parents can configure
- Age ratings and content: Restrict games and media that exceed the child’s permitted age level.
- Spending: Set limits so a child cannot freely charge purchases to the family account.
- Communication: Control messaging, voice chat and interaction with other players.
- Play time: Define when and how long the child can use the PS5.
- Exceptions: Approve an individual title or feature when its content is suitable despite a default restriction.
A child account’s access remains subordinate to the age settings and permissions selected by the parent or guardian. Console Sharing does not bypass those controls, and Plus online multiplayer sharing is also subject to them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSharing when the family has two PS5 consoles
The key decision is which console should receive the designation. If one PS5 is in the family room and the other is used privately, enable Console Sharing on the console where multiple profiles need the buyer’s games and offline access. Users of the other PS5 should not be promised the same local access simply because the purchasing account owns the titles.

Moving the designation is appropriate when the family replaces a console, moves the games to another room or changes who needs offline access. Before switching, make sure the purchasing account can sign in on the new console and that the games can be downloaded again from its Game Library.
Do not repeatedly activate consoles as a workaround for a missing license. If the wrong PS5 is enabled, move the setting deliberately and verify the new console before removing access from the old one.

A padlock normally points to a license, account, network or control issue. Work through these checks in order so you do not change the family setup unnecessarily.
- Verify the buyer. On the PS5, sign in with the account shown as the purchaser in its Game Library. A game bought by another adult account will not be unlocked by a different account’s sharing setting.
- Check the console designation. Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play under the purchasing account. Confirm that the setting is enabled on this PS5.
- Check the source of the game. If it came from PlayStation Plus, confirm that the membership is active and that the game is still included in the relevant plan or catalog. A catalog removal can look like a sharing failure.
- Restore licenses. From the purchaser’s account, use the PS5 option to restore licenses, then return to the game and test it again. This refreshes the console’s recognition of the account’s purchases.
- Restart and update. Restart the PS5 and install any available system-software update. A pending update can interfere with account or license checks.
- Check connectivity. If activation or a license refresh fails, test the network and PlayStation service status. Even an offline-capable shared console can need a connection for setup, account verification or a license refresh.
- Test the purchaser profile first. Launch the game as the purchasing account. If it fails there, the problem is with the purchase, membership or service rather than the other family profile.
- Test the family profile. After the purchaser can launch the title, switch to the family member’s profile. If only the child profile is blocked, inspect age ratings and Family Management permissions instead of changing the license.
Sony’s error guidance also points to signing in with the account that owns the content and enabling Console Sharing when a padlock appears. If the title remains unavailable after those checks, record the exact error and determine whether the purchase, membership, network or parental-control layer is responsible before contacting PlayStation Support.

How to change the shared PS5
On the old console, sign in as the purchasing account and disable Console Sharing and Offline Play. Then sign in on the replacement PS5 and enable the same setting there. Download the games again from the purchaser’s Game Library, and have family members test them from their own profiles.
If you no longer have access to the old console, Sony provides remote deactivation for all devices. Remote deactivation is available only once every six months, so use it for a genuine lost, replaced or inaccessible console rather than as a routine troubleshooting button. After remote deactivation, activate the intended PS5 locally and verify the games before relying on offline play.
Offline, online and game-specific limits
Console Sharing authorizes the designated PS5 to launch the buyer’s downloaded games without an internet connection. It does not guarantee that every game mode works offline. Multiplayer, cloud-connected modes, publisher servers and other network features can impose their own requirements.

Online multiplayer shared through Plus remains conditional on an active, eligible membership and the account’s parental settings. A game can also require a separate online service or subscription, so check the game’s own requirements when the base installation works but a network mode does not.
Cloud saves and other account services should not be treated as shared merely because a game is playable locally. Plus cloud storage, automatic patch downloads and time-limited trial access remain personal to the subscriber according to Sony’s benefit rules.
A practical family checklist
- Choose the one PS5 that needs shared local and offline access.
- Sign in there with the adult account that purchased the games.
- Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play through Settings > Users and Accounts > Other.
- Download the titles from that account’s Game Library.
- Create separate adult and child PSN profiles instead of sharing the purchaser’s password.
- Configure Family Management before a child plays.
- Check Plus membership and catalog eligibility for subscription games.
- Use each player’s own profile for saves, permissions and purchases.
- If a padlock appears, verify ownership, sharing status, membership, licenses, system software and network service in that order.
- When changing consoles, disable the old designation first; use remote deactivation only when necessary because it is limited to once every six months.
With that arrangement, the family gets the intended benefit: purchased and downloaded games are available to separate users on one authorized PS5, including offline, while ownership, subscriptions and parental permissions remain attached to the accounts that control them.
