How to Set Your Time Zone Automatically on Windows, Mac, iPhone, and Android

Find the automatic time-zone setting for Windows, Mac, iPhone, or Android, plus the location and policy checks to try if it is unavailable or inaccurate.

Turn on automatic time-zone detection in your device’s date-and-time settings. Windows has a dedicated switch; Apple devices also need location-related settings enabled, while Android’s controls vary by manufacturer. Follow the steps for your device, then use the troubleshooting checks if the option is missing or the displayed zone is wrong.

Windows 11: Turn on automatic time-zone selection

  1. Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
  2. Turn on Set time zone automatically.

Set time automatically is a separate control: it synchronizes the clock’s date and time, while the time-zone switch selects the zone. Microsoft says daylight-saving changes are automatic when Set time zone automatically is on. If you turn it off, Windows provides a separate daylight-saving adjustment setting. See Microsoft’s Windows time, date, and time-zone instructions.

Windows 10: Use the same settings path

  1. Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
  2. Turn on Set time zone automatically.

Microsoft’s instructions cover both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so these steps apply to devices that still use it; Microsoft recommends moving to a supported Windows version. If the switch is unavailable, see the troubleshooting section below.

Mac: Enable location services and automatic time zone

  1. Connect the Mac to the internet.
  2. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and turn on Location Services.
  3. At the bottom of the app and service list, select Details beside System Services. Enable the time-zone and system-customization settings.
  4. Open System Settings > General > Date & Time. Turn on both automatic date-and-time and automatic time-zone settings.

Apple’s instructions for an Apple device that will not change its time or time zone are at Apple Support. Apple recommends restarting the Mac if automatic adjustment still does not work.

#1 Best Overall

iPhone: Turn on automatic time and the time-zone location service

  1. Open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically.
  2. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services and turn on Setting Time Zone.

Apple says the location service lets the iPhone use its current location to determine the correct time zone. Its troubleshooting checklist also includes checking internet access and installing current software. See Apple’s time and time-zone support steps.

Android: Enable automatic time zone in Clock settings

  1. Open the Clock app and tap More > Settings > Change date and time.
  2. Turn on Automatic time zone.
  3. If your device offers Use location, enable it if you want location-based time-zone detection.

Automatic time zone is separate from Automatic date and time. Android manufacturers and versions may use different menus, and some devices do not offer automatic time-zone selection. Google documents the options and variations in Set time, date and time zone.

If automatic time-zone selection is missing, disabled, or inaccurate

Check location and connectivity

  • Mac: Check internet access, Location Services, the time-zone permission under System Services, and both automatic controls under Date & Time. Restart after correcting settings if automatic adjustment still fails.
  • iPhone: Confirm Setting Time Zone is enabled, and check internet access and software updates.
  • Android: Search Settings for “time zone” or “date and time” if the Clock app route differs. Check for a location control if the device provides one.
  • Windows: Check location permissions. Organizational policy can also affect automatic detection.

Consider restrictions and device support

  • iPhone: Apple says Set Automatically may be unavailable with some carriers or in some countries and regions. A Screen Time passcode or corporate device profile can make the setting greyed out.
  • Windows: The automatic time-zone control is system-wide. Microsoft says it may be hidden or greyed out for non-administrators on Windows 10; an administrator may need to address device policy. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 troubleshooting guidance. Avoid changing registry settings to work around an unavailable control.
  • Android: Menu options and automatic-selection support vary by device; some models do not provide the feature.

Choose a time zone manually if needed

  • Windows: Turn off Set time zone automatically, then choose a zone from the time-zone dropdown.
  • iPhone: Turn off Set Automatically, then select a city in Settings > General > Date & Time.
  • Android: Use the manual time-zone option in the device’s date-and-time settings.

For platform-specific instructions, see Microsoft, Apple, and Google.
