To set up an external OLED gaming monitor for HDR, select that monitor in Windows 11’s display settings, turn on HDR, then run the Windows HDR Calibration app full screen on that display. Follow its patterns rather than copying brightness values from another monitor: the right result depends on the display and its current mode.
Before you start: use Windows HDR Calibration for an external monitor
Microsoft’s built-in Display calibration for HDR video feature is for built-in displays. For an external HDR-capable OLED monitor, use the Windows HDR Calibration app. Microsoft lists Windows 11 as a requirement for the app. Its HDR settings guidance also notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.

Have the monitor connected and powered on. HDR capability is determined by the selected display and connection as reported in Windows; OLED alone does not confirm what Windows can use. Microsoft’s overview explains HDR in Windows and the display capabilities Windows checks.

- Open Settings > System > Display.
- If more than one display is connected, select the OLED gaming monitor you want to configure.
- Open that display’s HDR settings and check the capability indicators. Turn on HDR if Windows reports that the display supports it.
Keep the Settings window and calibration app on the OLED monitor being configured. With multiple displays, choosing the wrong display can mean changing HDR settings or calibrating a different screen than intended.

Check the monitor’s own HDR mode
Use the monitor’s manual to identify its HDR mode and any image-processing controls. OSD labels and available options differ by model, so there is no universal OLED preset, tone-mapping option, brightness value, or set of calibration numbers that applies to every monitor.
Microsoft cautions that post-processing effects enabled by default can affect how the Windows HDR Calibration app behaves; those effects may be disabled through the display’s on-screen display (OSD). Follow the monitor manual for relevant settings. Avoid hidden service-menu controls and settings copied from another panel.
Run Windows HDR Calibration
Check compatibility and launch the app
Install Windows HDR Calibration from Microsoft Store. Microsoft’s app requirements include Windows 11, an HDR-capable display with HDR enabled, full-screen app mode, supported graphics hardware for saturation controls, and WDDM 2.7 or later. The supported graphics families listed by Microsoft are:

If compatibility or display behavior is unexpected, check Windows Update or your GPU manufacturer for driver updates. Launch the app on the OLED monitor and use it full screen. Microsoft describes its three test patterns as recommended by the HDR Gaming Interest Group (HGIG) for HDR gaming.
Adjust the three test patterns
For each pattern, move the slider until the pattern is no longer visible, following the app’s instructions. The patterns are used to set the darkest visible detail, brightest visible detail, and maximum display brightness. These are display-specific adjustments: don’t substitute a nit value or slider position reported for another OLED model.
Set saturation conservatively
The app’s final controls adjust saturation for SDR and HDR content while HDR is enabled. Microsoft notes that the effect can be subtle and vary by display, and warns that excessive saturation can make the image look unnatural. Starting near the default and making small changes is a practical way to judge the result, not a Microsoft-prescribed numeric setting.

Review the profile and check the image
The app creates a color profile. Microsoft says it can be removed through the Color Management control panel and recommends running calibration again after a display setup change, such as adding or replacing a display. Use the app under lighting conditions similar to your normal viewing environment.

After calibration, check familiar HDR content or a game that supports HDR and see whether the image looks plausible. This is a practical visual check, not a universal certification test. If you have multiple monitors, confirm that the app ran on the intended OLED display.

Calibration and Auto HDR are separate. A game with native HDR uses its own HDR implementation. Windows 11’s optional Auto HDR feature can increase color range and brightness for supported older games that do not provide native HDR. Microsoft documents the option in Use Auto HDR for better gaming in Windows.

Turn Auto HDR on or off in the selected display’s HDR settings, then judge the result in each supported game. It is not a replacement for enabling HDR in Windows or calibrating the monitor, and it is not automatically preferable to a game’s native HDR mode.
When a result looks wrong
- The app does not behave as expected: Confirm HDR is enabled for the selected display, run the app full screen on that monitor, and check the OSD for post-processing effects that may interfere.
- Colors look oversaturated: Reduce the app’s saturation adjustment; Microsoft cautions that too much can look unnatural.
- The image changes after a setup change: Run the calibration app again after adding or replacing a display, as Microsoft recommends.
- You cannot find matching OSD labels: Consult the exact model’s manual rather than assuming another monitor’s settings apply. For example, LG provides a support page and owner’s manual for the 27GS95QE-B.
Microsoft describes HDR-certified displays as typically working well out of the box, while offering the app as a way to calibrate their HDR experience. The app is a software calibration aid; these steps do not amount to professional instrument-based calibration.
