ChatGPT can use a selfie or other reference photo to generate a preview of clothing on you. It saves the reference photo for future try-ons until you replace or delete it. The preview is not a fit test, and trying something on does not buy it: purchases depend on the merchant and whether the item supports checkout in ChatGPT.
How ChatGPT uses your photo for virtual try-on
OpenAI’s Shopping with ChatGPT Search help page, updated shortly before October 4, 2026, describes two ways to create a preview:

- Ask ChatGPT to find clothing or an accessory. On an eligible product listing, select Try on, then take or upload a selfie.
- Upload a picture of a garment and ask ChatGPT to show how it might look on you.
ChatGPT generates an image from the person photo and garment reference. OpenAI’s developer guidance describes virtual try-on as an image-editing task, with evaluation goals such as retaining a person’s identity, body shape and pose while representing garment details, lighting and drape plausibly. Those are goals for evaluating images, not a guarantee that every preview achieves them.
Does ChatGPT know your size or guarantee the clothes will fit?
No. A generated image is a visual preview, not a measurement or fitting-room test. OpenAI warns that try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size. Before buying, check the garment’s measurements, size chart, product details and the seller’s return policy.

Does ChatGPT save your try-on photo?
Yes. The feature’s help page says ChatGPT saves a reference photo for future try-ons. To manage it, go to Settings → Personalization → Reference photos, where you can replace or delete the selected image. The feature-specific page does not state a separate retention period.
OpenAI’s broader ChatGPT privacy settings explain general account controls, including access, export and deletion of account data and choices about whether chats are used to improve models. Those general controls do not establish a specific processing or retention period for try-on photos.

Can you buy the clothes in ChatGPT?
Trying on an item and purchasing it are separate steps. ChatGPT can show product options and merchant links; some eligible products and merchants may also offer Instant Checkout. OpenAI says the merchant handles orders, payment processing, fulfillment, returns and customer support when Instant Checkout is used. Product discovery is not a guarantee that an item is available or that its listing details are current. OpenAI says product information, prices, stock and discounts can be wrong or change, so confirm them on the retailer’s listing and at checkout. Its shopping research help page also says shopping research chats are not shared with retailers. OpenAI describes shopping results as organic, not ads or influenced by its partnerships; ads are separate from product results.

What to check before ordering
- Compare the seller’s size chart and garment measurements with your own measurements.
- Check the product description, photos, seller, price and availability on the retailer’s page.
- Read the return policy before paying, especially if you are relying on the generated preview.
- Treat the image as a styling aid, not proof of how the real garment will fit or look.
ChatGPT can help you visualize an item, but the retailer’s measurements and terms—not the generated image—are what to rely on when deciding whether to order.
