Start with the phone’s model and software version, then choose an option that avoids the movement that is hardest: placing a finger, making a head movement, tapping small targets, or operating the touchscreen at all. On supported iPhones, Touch ID or Face ID accessibility options may simplify authentication; on Android, Voice Access can enter a PIN by voice in supported setups. Touch adjustments and alternate controls can also make navigation easier, but they do not automatically remove the need for a passcode.
Choose an option based on the movement that is difficult

Try a built-in authentication option first if the main difficulty is entering a passcode. If the problem is using the phone after it unlocks, touch accommodations or alternate navigation may be more useful. iPhone: reduce the physical effort of unlocking and using the screen
Use Touch ID without pressing the sensor
If the iPhone has Touch ID, Apple documents that it can unlock when a registered finger rests on the sensor without pressing it. This removes a press, but still requires placing a finger on the sensor. Touch ID is not available on every iPhone. See Apple’s Touch ID instructions for supported models and setup.
Set up Face ID with Accessibility Options
Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode and start Face ID setup. If the usual head movement is not possible, use Accessibility Options during setup. Apple notes that this approach still secures Face ID but requires more consistency when unlocking. Instructions are in Apple’s Face ID and attention settings guide.

Adjust how the touchscreen registers touch
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Touch Accommodations. These settings can change how taps, swipes, and gestures are recognized to better match the person’s touch pattern. Apple recommends setting the preferences before turning Touch Accommodations on, since the feature changes how the screen interprets touch. Follow Apple’s Touch Accommodations guide.
Use AssistiveTouch for common actions and gestures
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch. Its on-screen menu can make actions and substitute gestures available through a simpler control. Apple also documents use with compatible adaptive accessories. AssistiveTouch changes interaction with the device; it does not remove a required passcode or authenticate the user by itself. Know what Assistive Access does—and does not do
Assistive Access provides a simplified iPhone experience; it is not a general unlocking method. During setup, Face ID or Touch ID may be configured depending on the model, but the person still needs the device passcode. Assistive Access also has its own passcode for entry, exit, and changing its settings. Apple’s instructions are at Set up Assistive Access on iPhone.

Android: use voice or an alternate input method
Enter a PIN with Voice Access
When Voice Access is listening on the lock screen, Google documents a method for calling up unlock controls with spoken commands and selecting PIN digits by their labels. The supported lock-screen method is PIN; do not assume Voice Access can enter a password or pattern there. Whether it is available and how to activate it depend on the phone and its settings. Use Switch Access to select items without direct tapping
Switch Access scans and highlights on-screen items so they can be selected with an external switch or keyboard connected over USB or Bluetooth. This can reduce the need for precise touchscreen movements, but it is a navigation method, not a replacement for the phone’s authentication requirements. Initial setup may be difficult if the person cannot operate the screen, so arrange assistance if needed. Google explains setup in Set up Switch Access for Android and use in Control your Android device with Switch Access.
If considering an adaptive switch for Android or a Bluetooth switch for Switch Access, check that the particular accessory works with the phone and the intended setup before buying. Google describes the connection options but does not endorse a specific supplier or product.

Try Camera Switches if facial movement is easier
Android’s Switch Access can use camera-detected facial gestures as an input. The phone needs to be mounted securely with a clear view of the face; initial configuration may require another person’s help. This changes how items are selected, not how the phone authenticates the user. See Google’s Camera Switches instructions.

Change the touch-and-hold timing for accidental holds
In Android Accessibility settings, set Touch & hold delay to Short, Medium, or Long. This changes when a touch counts as a hold and may help if unintended long presses are the problem. It does not make small PIN targets easier to tap in general. See Google’s Touch & hold delay guide.

Set up the option safely and test the actual lock screen
- Identify the device. Check the phone model and software version so you can confirm the feature exists and follow the correct settings path.
- Match the feature to the difficult movement. Consider whether finger placement, head positioning, speech, or direct screen contact is the main barrier, and whether an existing accessory is available.
- Configure the feature while you can still use the phone. Some options involve setup steps that may be hard to complete without help. For Touch Accommodations, set preferences before enabling it.
- Test unlocking and ordinary use separately. Confirm that the chosen option works at the lock screen, then check whether additional touch or navigation changes are needed after unlocking.
- Keep a workable recovery method. Accessibility controls do not automatically bypass passcodes or other security checks. Make sure the person can still enter the required credentials or get trusted assistance if the preferred input method is unavailable.
