ChatGPT’s virtual try-on is an AI-generated image edit, not a measurement-based fitting tool. It can change more than the clothing you named, misread a garment or photo, or approximate your appearance and the product. OpenAI cautions that try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size. You can often make an edit clearer with a more specific prompt, but judge the result as a visual preview—not evidence that an item will fit.
Why can a ChatGPT try-on look wrong?
A try-on combines image interpretation with image generation. ChatGPT has to identify the person and garment, follow your instructions, and create a new image. A result can look plausible while differing from the reference or changing details you expected to remain untouched.

- The edit boundary may spill over. In ChatGPT, you can select an area to edit, but OpenAI says the selection highlight is not always precise and edits may extend beyond it. Check nearby areas as well as the selected region. OpenAI’s Images in ChatGPT help explains the editing workflow and this limitation.
- The photos may be hard to interpret. An unclear or ambiguous image can make interpretation less accurate. Poor visibility, obstructions, or several visually similar details can make it harder to convey what should change. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Image Inputs FAQ discusses ambiguity and image-input limitations.
- The instructions may leave room for interpretation. A short request such as “put this on me” may not specify which photo shows the person, which shows the clothing, or what must stay unchanged. OpenAI’s image-prompting guide advises identifying both the requested change and the elements to preserve.
- The generated image may not preserve every detail. OpenAI announced stronger instruction following and preservation in its December 16, 2025 ChatGPT Images announcement, but that does not make every result an exact reproduction. The shopping help explicitly warns that the item or appearance may not be represented exactly.
- A realistic-looking result is not a fit assessment. The image does not establish how a garment will fit your body or whether its size is right. Treat the preview separately from the merchant’s actual sizing information.
OpenAI’s published materials do not give a numerical accuracy rate or say how often try-ons look wrong. The evaluation guidance describes qualities to inspect, not a measured success percentage.

- Start with clear references. Upload the person photo and the relevant garment image. Use a clear, well-lit photo with the subject and clothing detail visible where possible; this is a practical way to reduce ambiguity, not a guarantee. If you provide multiple images, say which one shows the person and which one controls the garment’s design. OpenAI’s image-input FAQ also suggests annotating an image to direct attention to an important area.
- Say what must remain unchanged. Name the details to preserve, such as identity, face, skin tone, body shape, pose, hairstyle, expression, proportions, background, framing, or camera angle. Then say that only the named garment should change. Include only the preservation constraints relevant to your image.
- Describe the garment’s distinguishing details. Specify the item type, color, pattern, material cues, and design features that matter. If there are reference images, say which image determines each detail. You can request natural fabric drape, folds, and occlusion, with lighting and shadows consistent with the source photo; those instructions can clarify the goal but cannot guarantee fidelity.
- Use selection for a local correction, then inspect beyond it. In ChatGPT’s image editor, select the affected area if useful, or name the area precisely in your prompt. Because edits can extend beyond a selection, review surrounding clothing, skin, and background too.
- Iterate one change at a time. If the first result gets the garment mostly right but alters the face or background, ask for that specific correction rather than changing several requirements at once. Restate important constraints if they have drifted. This follows OpenAI’s guidance to define the edit and iterate deliberately.
- Check purchase information independently. For a shopping try-on, compare the listing’s measurements and product details and read its return policy. Do not infer a size from the generated image.
A prompt you can adapt
OpenAI’s published image-prompting guide includes a virtual clothing try-on example. This adaptation makes the reference roles and preservation requests explicit:

Edit the person photo using the clothing reference. Preserve the person’s identity, face, skin tone, body shape, pose, hairstyle, expression, and proportions. Change only [name the garment]. Match its [color, pattern, material cues, and design details] to reference image [number]. Fit it naturally to the existing pose, with fabric drape, folds, and occlusion. Match the original lighting and shadows. Keep the background, camera angle, framing, and all other details unchanged. Do not add accessories, text, logos, or watermarks.
Replace the bracketed details with your own, and remove constraints that do not apply. A specific prompt helps communicate your intent; it is not a promise that the generated image will match the product or preserve every feature.

What to inspect in the result
OpenAI’s image-evaluation guidance treats virtual try-on differently from purely creative editing: the result needs to preserve the wearer and scene while representing the garment. Use these checks to decide whether the image is useful as a preview:

Where to find ChatGPT’s shopping try-on
As described in OpenAI’s October 1, 2026 release notes, clothing and accessory product listings can show a Try on button. You take or upload a selfie, and ChatGPT Images generates the preview. The reference photo is saved for future try-ons. To manage it, go to Settings → Personalization → Reference photos, where you can change or delete it.
OpenAI’s Shopping with ChatGPT Search help also describes uploading a clothing or accessory picture in a conversation and asking how it could look on you. The shopping feature’s availability and interface may vary as ChatGPT changes; consult the current help page if the controls differ from those described here.
