To send a live source from Wowza Streaming Engine to YouTube Live, create the YouTube event first, then add a dedicated YouTube Live stream target in Wowza and enable both the application’s targets and the individual target. The destination host and application come from YouTube’s Stream URL; the destination stream name is YouTube’s generated key, not the friendly label you gave that key.
Before you begin
This procedure is for Wowza Streaming Engine, which has a dedicated YouTube Live target form. It assumes a live source stream is already reaching your Wowza application. Wowza Video is a different product with a custom RTMP target workflow; its fields and steps are not interchangeable with the Streaming Engine instructions below. See Wowza’s RTMP distribution documentation for that separate product context.

- Make sure your YouTube channel is able to create a live stream and that you can access YouTube Studio.
- Identify the Wowza Live application receiving your source stream, and note its source stream name.
- Have the YouTube event’s Stream URL and generated stream key ready. Treat the key as a credential.
Create or select the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, create a live stream with an encoder or select the event you intend to use.
- Open the event’s Stream Settings and record the Stream URL and generated stream key/name. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions likewise call for the server URL and stream key.
- Keep the key private. Do not include it in screenshots, public troubleshooting posts, or notes shared outside the people who need to configure the stream.
Add the YouTube Live target in Wowza Streaming Engine
- In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, open the relevant Live application and select Stream Targets.
- Choose Add Stream Target. Under Third-Party Target Destinations, select YouTube Live.
- Enter a unique, descriptive target name so you can identify this event later.
- Select the incoming Source Stream Name that is already connected to the application.
- Split the YouTube Stream URL into Wowza’s destination fields. For example, Wowza’s sample URL
rtmp://abc.rtmp.youtube.com/live2has hostabc.rtmp.youtube.comand application namelive2. Use the values from your own event’s URL rather than copying the sample. - Leave Destination Application Instance blank. Use destination port
1935, the default RTMP port, unless the event’s current instructions specify otherwise. - For Destination Stream Name, enter YouTube’s generated alphanumeric key/code. Do not enter the friendly name or label you assigned to a YouTube Stream Key.
- Add the target to save its configuration.

Enable the target and start the stream
- In the application’s Stream Targets settings, enable Stream Targets for the application.
- Check the individual YouTube target. If it is marked Disabled, enable that target as well. Adding a target does not by itself ensure that both levels are enabled.
- Start or connect the incoming source stream to Wowza. Watch the target’s status as Wowza initializes its connection and begins pushing to YouTube.
- Confirm the event is receiving the stream in YouTube Studio before relying on it as live. If you have a scheduled event, use YouTube Studio’s event controls to proceed with the broadcast.
Understand the destination fields and status
Stream URL fields are not the stream key
The Stream URL supplies the destination host and application name. The generated key is a separate value entered as the destination stream name. Mixing these up is a common configuration error: the friendly key label is not a substitute for the generated alphanumeric code.

What “Waiting” means
Wowza defines Waiting as an enabled target that is not yet pushing. The selected source may not be connected, or Wowza may still be initializing the destination connection. A Waiting status alone does not establish that the YouTube key is wrong.
Adaptive-bitrate playback
Wowza’s official documentation states: “YouTube automatically creates lower-bitrate renditions of the stream for adaptive bitrate playback. No additional configuration is required.” This is YouTube’s rendition handling; it does not replace correct source, target, or event configuration.

Troubleshoot a target that does not reach YouTube
| Symptom | What to check | What to do |

| The target remains Waiting | Whether the selected source stream is connected; whether Wowza is still initializing the destination connection. | Start or reconnect the source and allow the target to initialize. Waiting by itself is not proof of a bad key. |
| The target is Disabled | Both the application-level Stream Targets setting and the individual target status. | Enable Stream Targets for the application, then enable the specific YouTube target. |
