In vMix, open Streaming Settings → Quality → Streaming Quality, set the encode size to your intended output resolution, and enter a bitrate based on YouTube’s live-encoder recommendation for your codec and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30, 14 Mbps for 1080p60, 4 Mbps for 720p30, and 8 Mbps for 720p60. These are starting points—not guarantees of image quality or uninterrupted streaming. A 24/7 channel has no special published bitrate preset; choose a sustainable setting, leave upload headroom, and test the actual installation.
Choose a resolution and bitrate that your connection can sustain
Resolution and bitrate are separate controls: resolution sets the encoded picture size, while bitrate sets how much data is sent each second. Keep the output’s aspect ratio consistent with your production, and use YouTube’s live-stream recommendations rather than its separate recommendations for uploaded videos.

| H.264 live output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current H.264 live-encoder recommendations; the help page does not state a publication year (accessed October 3, 2026). The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. If you use AV1 or H.265, consult the corresponding column in YouTube’s live encoder settings table and confirm your vMix version and hardware support the selected format.

Pick a practical starting point
- 720p30: a lower-bandwidth option for relatively static content or a constrained connection.
- 720p60: a higher frame rate at 720p; it needs more bandwidth than 720p30.
- 1080p30: a common full-HD starting point when 30 fps suits the production.
- 1080p60: requires the most bandwidth among these four H.264 examples and should be tested under sustained load.
Higher resolution or frame rate is not automatically better: the source material, viewer needs, available upload capacity, and the computer’s ability to encode continuously all matter.
#1 Best Overall
- Capture video directly to your hard drive
- Record video in many video file formats including avi, wmv, flv, mpg, 3gp, mp4, mov and more
- Capture video from a webcam, network IP camera or a video input device (e.g.: VHS recorder)
- Screen capture software records the entire screen, a single window or any selected portion
- Digital zoom with the mouse scroll wheel, and drag to scroll the recording window
Set the stream quality in vMix
- Open the stream configuration. Use the Stream control to open Streaming Settings. Select the YouTube destination or configure the current YouTube stream URL and stream key. vMix also supports custom RTMP settings; see the vMix Streaming Settings guide.
- Open the quality controls. Go to Quality → Streaming Quality. Set Encode Size to the intended stream resolution. vMix advises matching the size to the aspect ratio in use.
- Enter the bitrate in kbps. Convert Mbps to kbps when filling the field: for example, 10 Mbps is 10,000 kbps. Use the YouTube recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate as a starting point.
- Choose the stream source if available. Select the intended vMix output where your edition offers that option. Available output selection depends on vMix edition.
- Set video, audio, and keyframes. For the broadly compatible route, use H.264 video and AAC audio. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube recommends two seconds and says it must not exceed four seconds. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for live ingest, while vMix describes support for H.264, AV1, or HEVC where hardware support applies. Confirm compatibility before using a newer format.
- Choose a connection protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported. If connecting through a URL and key, use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room and ensure the encoder connection supports it. RTMPS encrypts RTMP using TLS/SSL; details are in YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Review the network buffer setting. vMix describes this as the maximum number of seconds it can keep buffered. Increasing it may help when maximum network speed is unreliable, but it can affect latency and cannot fix a failed internet connection. The vMix Streaming Quality guide describes the available quality controls.
Calculate upload headroom for continuous streaming
YouTube recommends that the total streaming bitrate fit within available upload bandwidth and advises leaving 20% headroom. That 20% figure is YouTube’s recommendation; the current help page does not state a publication year. Measure outbound upload capacity rather than relying on download results alone. Shared networks can reduce the bandwidth available to the streaming computer, and simultaneous streams consume their combined outgoing rates. YouTube warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” See YouTube’s streaming tips.
For a fixed 24/7 workstation, consider wired Ethernet, a backup internet path, and backup power for the computer and network equipment. These are practical continuity measures, not guarantees. Choose hardware for the actual network, computer, source formats, and workload; there is no universal router, capture card, UPS, or ISP recommendation established here.

Test before relying on the stream
- Configure a private or unlisted test stream and confirm the encoder sends the intended resolution and frame rate.
- Include representative movement and audio from the real channel. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect vMix’s streaming status.
- Confirm actual upload capacity and headroom. For continuous use, observe the system during ordinary network activity before treating the setup as dependable.
- If you intend to use backup hardware or a second connection, test the transition on the actual installation and verify the stream remains available to viewers.
YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring the event. The longer observation and failover checks above are practical advice for a continuous channel, not a formal 24/7 requirement. Neither the cited YouTube nor vMix documentation establishes a guaranteed uptime design or settles account-specific continuous-stream limits and archive-retention behavior.
Troubleshoot common quality and connection problems
- The stream is unstable or YouTube reports connection issues: check measured upload capacity against the total outgoing bitrate, account for competing network use, and lower the output bitrate or resolution if sustained headroom is insufficient. YouTube cautions that connection disruptions can break a stream.
- The image is soft or blocky: check that Encode Size matches the intended output and aspect ratio, then verify the bitrate suits the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. Test with representative movement rather than judging a static screen alone.
- The stream does not match the planned resolution or frame rate: inspect vMix’s encode-size and source/output selections, then confirm the received format in the test stream and Live Control Room.
- Keyframe or ingest warnings appear: set a 2-second keyframe interval and ensure it does not exceed YouTube’s 4-second maximum. Confirm the selected codec and protocol are supported by the encoder and destination.
- Buffering or latency changes after adjusting the network buffer: remember that a larger buffer can change latency; it does not restore a broken connection. Recheck network stability and sustained upload capacity.
Or let it run in the cloud
