You can program two radios to the same channel and privacy code only if they support at least one common frequency. A VHF-only radio and a UHF-only radio cannot communicate directly just by matching channel numbers or code settings. First confirm frequency compatibility; then match the channel and, if needed, the code type and value.
Check frequency compatibility before changing settings
A channel number is not a universal frequency. Different radios may assign different frequencies to the same displayed channel, and a privacy-code setting cannot bridge that difference. Check both radios’ specifications or manuals for a frequency or channel that they both support. Garmin’s Rino manual likewise says compatible radios need to use standard frequencies and the same channel.

If one radio supports VHF frequencies only and the other UHF frequencies only, they do not have a shared frequency for direct communication. Confirm what each model actually supports rather than relying on “VHF” or “UHF” labels alone. If no common supported frequency exists, use radios compatible with the same frequency and radio service.
Program both radios for a basic test
- Confirm a shared, permitted frequency. Consult each radio’s specifications and the radio-service rules that apply where you are. A matching channel label alone is not enough.
- Select the same supported channel on both radios. Garmin notes that compatible radios must use the same channel.
- Turn squelch codes off on both radios for the initial test, if the models allow it. Depending on the radio, the setting may appear as off, 0, 00, or a similar label. Cobra says code 0 or 00 allows all signals on a channel to be heard; Midland’s MXT275 guide uses “oF” to disable its privacy-code filtering.
- Test in both directions. Have one radio transmit while the other receives, then swap roles. Follow the manuals’ instructions and applicable rules before transmitting.
- Add matching codes only if needed. Select the same code system and corresponding value on each radio, using both manuals’ code tables to verify the actual settings.
Match the code system and value—not just the displayed number
CTCSS and DCS are different squelch-code systems. Both radios must be set to compatible code systems and corresponding values, as well as the same channel. A code number shown by one model does not necessarily represent the same tone or DCS value on another. Compare the underlying values in the manuals rather than assuming that identical menu numbers match. Cobra’s CTCSS and DCS guide explains the systems and the need to match channel and code settings.

These settings are sometimes called “privacy codes,” but they do not make a conversation private. They filter which incoming signals open the speaker; someone listening on the same frequency may still hear the transmission. Garmin states in its Rino manual: “Squelch codes do not make your conversation private.”
Example: setting codes on a Midland MXT275
The following menu sequence is specific to the Midland MXT275; controls and labels vary by model. Its full user guide describes these steps:

- DUAL MODE POC + ANALOG COMMUNICATION: Combines Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) with 8W VHF/UHF analog radio operation, giving users the flexibility to communicate nationwide through cellular networks or locally through traditional radio frequencies.
- BUILT-IN GPS TRACKING & SOS EMERGENCY ALERT: Integrated GPS positioning enables real-time location tracking through the GLOBAL-PTT dispatch platform. The dedicated SOS emergency button provides instant emergency alerts, enhancing worker safety and team coordination.
- HIGH-POWER 8-WATT ANALOG RADIO: Featuring a powerful 8W transmitter, the 5288Plus delivers strong, reliable analog communication on both 136-174MHz VHF and 400-490MHz UHF frequencies, ideal for large job sites and rural areas.
- PRE-INSTALLED SIM & NATIONWIDE COVERAGE: Each radio comes with a pre-installed IoT SIM card and automatically connects to the strongest available carrier, providing seamless Push-to-Talk communication across the country without repeaters.
- MULTI-CARRIER NETWORK AUTO SELECTION: The radio automatically selects the best available network for maximum coverage and reliability, helping teams stay connected even in challenging coverage areas.
- Choose the channel with the channel-up or channel-down controls.
- Press Menu and select “Pt.”
- Choose off, CTCSS, or DCS.
- Scroll to the desired code and confirm with Lock.
Set the other MXT275 to the same channel and privacy-code selection. The guide also documents separate transmit and receive code settings for repeater channels, so check those settings if using a repeater or if communication works in only one direction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTroubleshoot a failed connection
- Neither radio receives the other: Verify that the radios support the same actual frequency or channel, not merely the same channel label.
- They work with codes off but not with codes on: Check that both use CTCSS or both use DCS as appropriate, then compare the actual tone or DCS value in each manual.
- Communication works in only one direction: Check for separate transmit and receive code settings, particularly when using a repeater.
- Reception is weak or intermittent: Check the antenna connection, battery condition, distance, obstructions, and channel settings. Midland notes that range depends on conditions.
- No common supported frequency is available: Changing a code will not resolve the mismatch. Check the manufacturers’ specifications or use radios compatible with the same service and frequency.
Check local radio rules before transmitting
Radio-service permissions and channel allocations vary by country. In the United States, federal rules allow GMRS stations to communicate with FRS units and FRS units to communicate with GMRS stations (47 CFR § 95.1731; 47 CFR § 95.531). Garmin’s US-oriented Rino manual warns that an FCC license is required to transmit on GMRS frequencies in the United States. These provisions do not authorize transmission on arbitrary frequencies; check your radio’s certification and your local regulator’s current rules. Garmin’s manual also lists different channel uses for the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, so do not assume one country’s settings apply elsewhere.
