There is no single crossover setting for every laptop setup: the right choice depends on your main speakers and whether filtering happens in the subwoofer, receiver, audio interface, DSP, or software.
How to connect a subwoofer to a laptop
Start by tracing the complete signal path: laptop output, subwoofer or receiver input, and the connection to your main speakers. The ports determine which cable or interface will work; the word “laptop” does not guarantee a particular output.

1. Check the available ports
Identify your laptop model, operating system, speakers, and subwoofer, then check the ports and manuals for each. Some compatible Macs have a 3.5 mm audio-out port for headphones, speakers, and other audio equipment; other computers may rely on USB, HDMI, or an external audio interface. See Apple’s guide to identifying the ports on a Mac.
2. Select the device carrying the sound
On macOS, open System Settings > Sound > Output and choose the device connected to your sound system. Available choices can include the Mac’s internal speakers, equipment connected to its sound port, USB audio devices, and AirPlay devices. Depending on the connected hardware, Audio MIDI Setup may offer additional audio configuration. Apple’s Mac sound output instructions cover this path. The exact steps for Windows and Linux depend on the operating-system version and device, so consult its audio settings and documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- Convenient Control Pod
- 25 Watts (RMS) Output
- Compact Subwoofer
3. Connect matching outputs and inputs
If the laptop has an analog 3.5 mm output and the subwoofer has stereo RCA line inputs, a stereo 3.5 mm-to-dual-RCA cable is one possible connection. Audioengine’s S8 setup guide identifies its 3.5 mm and RCA jacks as line-level inputs for sources including computers. That example does not mean every laptop or subwoofer has those ports.
If the laptop lacks a compatible analog output, use a compatible USB audio interface or DAC, or another supported digital output path. Check the manuals for the laptop, interface, subwoofer, speakers, and any receiver to confirm the connections and signal format.

- Includes CA 3090 2.1 speakers with subwoofer, 110V AC power adapter, and user guide; includes one year manufacturer warranty
4. Distinguish line input from LFE
A stereo line-level input carries the source’s audio signal. An LFE/subwoofer input is intended for a dedicated subwoofer feed from compatible equipment such as a receiver or preamplifier. A laptop’s ordinary stereo output does not become a discrete LFE channel just by connecting it to a subwoofer. The Audioengine S8 guide lists its RCA/3.5 mm line inputs separately from its LFE input.
Where to set the subwoofer crossover
A crossover is a filter that determines which frequencies are sent to the subwoofer, the main speakers, or both. Set it on the component that performs that filtering; selecting a laptop output device is not the same as setting a crossover.

Direct laptop-to-subwoofer connection
In a direct analog setup, the subwoofer’s low-pass control may limit the frequencies it plays without removing bass from the main speakers. For example, Audioengine says the S8 has a variable low-pass filter and that its RCA line output remains full-range. If your speakers receive a full-range signal, turning the subwoofer’s crossover knob does not automatically high-pass them.
The Audioengine S8 setup guide gives that model’s adjustable crossover a range of 50–130 Hz. This is an S8 specification, not a recommended setting for other subwoofers or a universal laptop value.

- High-quality audio – 2.1 speakers with subwoofer deliver 62W peak power and 30W RMS. Each satellite features dual 2-inch titanium drivers that deliver crisp highs and warm mid-tones while the 5.25-inch down-firing subwoofer with tuned port puts out deep, powerful bass, for excellent sounding music, movies, or games.
Receiver-, DSP-, or interface-managed system
If a receiver, DSP, audio interface, or powered speaker system manages bass, use its instructions to identify which device controls the crossover and whether it also high-passes the main speakers. Avoid unknowingly stacking filters: a subwoofer’s low-pass setting and a receiver’s bass-management setting may both affect the signal.
For AVR-managed systems, SVS gives a rule of thumb to set the speaker-to-subwoofer crossover about 10–15 Hz above the speakers’ rated bass extension. This is manufacturer guidance for a receiver-managed setup, not a blanket setting for a laptop feeding a subwoofer directly. See SVS’s crossover guidance.

How to choose and refine a crossover setting
Use the main speakers’ stated or measured bass capability as a starting point only when the system’s bass management supports that approach. Then listen from your usual seat using familiar music and make small adjustments. If the bass sounds detached or makes the subwoofer easy to locate, try lowering its low-pass setting. The outcome also depends on the room and speaker placement.
- With receiver bass management: follow the receiver’s setup guidance and speaker specifications; the SVS 10–15 Hz rule applies to this AVR context.
- With a subwoofer’s own low-pass control: use it to adjust the subwoofer’s output, while checking whether the main speakers still receive full-range audio.
- With no documented crossover control: do not assume the laptop’s output selector supplies one. Check the audio device’s software and hardware manuals to find out where, if anywhere, bass management is available.
Balance volume and check the signal
Begin at modest volume. Apple notes that app-level volume controls cannot exceed the Mac’s output setting, and connected powered equipment may have its own gain controls. Raise levels carefully to avoid clipping or overdriving an input, then adjust the subwoofer level so its bass blends with the main speakers. The appropriate arrangement depends on whether the laptop’s output is variable and on the connected equipment.
If you hear no sound or one channel is missing, check the selected output device, cable seating, power, mute status, and selected subwoofer input. On supported devices, Audio MIDI Setup can configure external stereo or multichannel speaker assignments and play test tones. Apple documents those functions in its Audio MIDI Setup speaker configuration guide; it is not documented there as a general subwoofer crossover control.
