For better sound from an AV receiver, start with accurate speaker configuration and the receiver’s microphone calibration, then verify the TV or source signal path and choose processing deliberately. There is no single setting that is best for every room: the right result depends on your receiver, speakers, source and listening preference.
Start with the exact receiver and speaker system
Find the receiver’s model number and consult its manual before changing settings. Menu names and supported features vary. For example, Yamaha’s RX300A settings documentation separates speaker configuration, distance, levels, equalizer, test tone and room correction from HDMI audio output and ARC controls (Yamaha RX-V4A/RX-V6A manual).

In the receiver’s speaker setup, specify the channels you physically have: front, center, surround, height and subwoofer. The receiver uses this layout to route each channel and manage bass. A configuration that claims a speaker you do not have can leave content missing or routed incorrectly; omitting a speaker that is present can also prevent it from receiving the intended channel.

Calibrate the speakers from the listening position
Use the supplied measurement microphone and the calibration procedure for your receiver. Room correction is model-specific, so follow the manual’s instructions for microphone placement, height and measurement positions. Keep the room quiet while tones are measured. Onkyo’s AccuEQ instructions for the TX-RZ1100, for example, call for placing the supplied microphone at the listening position on a tripod; the receiver measures speaker test tones and automatically sets speaker levels, crossover frequencies and distances (Onkyo TX-RZ1100 AccuEQ instructions).

Review what the receiver measured
When calibration finishes, check the detected speakers, distances, levels, crossover settings and subwoofer routing. Treat the automatic result as a measured starting point rather than replacing it with arbitrary values. If you change the speaker layout, move speakers or substantially change the room, run the calibration again.
Choose room correction and listening modes deliberately
Room correction can compensate for aspects of the room’s acoustic effect, but available systems and controls differ by receiver. Pioneer’s guide describes equalization correction for acoustic distortion alongside separate phase and listening-mode options (Pioneer receiver support). Denon lists Audyssey and Dirac support for its Cinema 30 (Denon AVR-A10H product information). These are examples of model-specific capabilities, not features every receiver provides.

Compare modes at a consistent volume: a louder setting can seem more impressive even when it is not more faithful. For films, multichannel music and stereo, use a mode that suits the source and the way you want it reproduced. Enhancements are not automatic upgrades. Pioneer, for instance, documents Sound Retriever for eligible lossy files, but says it is ineffective for bitstream inputs and unavailable in Direct and Pure Direct modes.

HDMI ARC or eARC is often a straightforward way to send TV audio to a receiver, but the TV, receiver, source or app, and selected output format all need to support the signal you want. If surround or higher-quality audio is missing, check each device’s manual and its audio-output settings rather than assuming the cable alone determines compatibility.

ARC and eARC do not carry identical formats. Denon’s AVR-X6800H specifications describe eARC as carrying HD and 3D formats including Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby Atmos, while conventional ARC is limited to conventional 5.1-channel formats or PCM (Denon AVR-X6800H specifications). That distinction describes the cited receiver’s documentation; check both ends of your own connection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use source formats your receiver supports
When available, choose a lossless source format and confirm that the receiver’s input route can decode it. Format ceilings are device-specific. Yamaha says its MusicCast devices support ALAC up to 96 kHz/24-bit and WAV, FLAC and AIFF up to 192 kHz/24-bit; higher limits depend on the particular device (Yamaha MusicCast audio-format FAQ). These figures are not a specification for every AV receiver. A higher sample rate by itself does not guarantee better sound; compatibility and the quality of the recording or master matter too.

- Run calibration correctly: use the supplied microphone, follow the model’s placement instructions and keep the room quiet.
- Inspect the results: review speaker detection, levels, distances, crossover and bass routing.
- Verify the signal path: check the source format, TV output setting, HDMI ARC/eARC support and receiver input for the audio you expect.
- Compare processing: test appropriate listening modes at comparable volume, keeping in mind that features such as upmixing or enhancement depend on the receiver and input signal.
