Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor most console players, Essential is the low-cost starting point; choose Premium if you want a much larger cross-device library and Xbox-published games within a year, and choose Ultimate if day-one releases, cloud play, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics justify the higher price. Windows-only players who want day-one PC releases should choose PC Game Pass. Set up the subscription with a Microsoft account, install the Xbox app where needed, and check the local price, promotion, supported platform, and recurring-billing terms before you pay.
What Xbox Game Pass includes in 2026
Xbox Game Pass is a subscription library rather than a permanent purchase. You can install or stream eligible games while your subscription remains active and while each title stays in the catalog. Xbox describes access this way: “Game Pass subscribers enjoy access to games in the library until either the subscription is canceled/expires, or a game leaves the Game Pass library.” A title leaving the catalog or a lapse in billing can therefore remove play access even if the game is still installed.

The plan pages describe the following current figures. Game counts, features, cloud limits, regional availability, and platform support can change, so treat these as Xbox’s 2026 plan-page figures, not guarantees of a fixed catalog.

Choose a plan by the decision that matters most
Choose Essential for basic console value
Essential is aimed at a console player who mainly needs online console multiplayer and a modest included library. It is the sensible budget choice when day-one launches are unimportant and you do not need the largest catalog or the broadest bundle of extras. Check each game’s platform listing before subscribing if you intend to play on a PC or another supported device; the plan description covers multiple device types, but every title is not available everywhere.
Choose Premium for a larger library without paying for launch-day access
Premium is the middle option for someone who wants substantially more games across console, PC, and supported devices and can wait for Xbox-published releases. Its stated timing is within one year of launch, so it is not equivalent to day-one access. This plan is a good fit when catalog breadth and cross-device use matter more than immediate access to new first-party releases.
Choose Ultimate for the complete bundle
Ultimate is the choice for frequent players who want day-one releases, the largest listed catalog, cloud play, and the additional memberships bundled with the plan. EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics are part of the stated package, along with online console multiplayer and in-game benefits. It costs more than the other options in most markets, so compare the displayed local price against how often you will use those extras rather than assuming the bundle is automatically the best value.

Choose PC Game Pass for a Windows-only setup
PC Game Pass is designed for people who play on Windows and want day-one PC releases, EA Play, and in-game benefits. Cloud play is not included, so choose another plan if streaming games is a requirement. Confirm that your Windows system, storage, and controller or keyboard-and-mouse setup meet the requirements of the individual games you plan to install; a subscription does not change a game’s hardware requirements.

What to check before subscribing
- Microsoft account: Use the account that should own the subscription. A code or subscription redeemed to the wrong account generally cannot be moved simply by signing into a different profile.
- Device: Decide whether you will use an Xbox console, a Windows PC, supported cloud-play devices, or a combination. The plan name alone does not guarantee that every title runs on every device.
- Local price and promotion: Prices and introductory offers vary by country, account eligibility, tax treatment, and date. Read the amount shown at checkout rather than relying on an old promotion.
- Renewal terms: Xbox says recurring billing is switched on by default. Note the next billing date and the recurring amount before confirming payment.
- Catalog availability: A title can leave the service, and availability can differ by region, platform, plan, and time. Buy a game separately if you need permanent access to it.
How to set up Game Pass from the official Xbox page
- Sign in to your Microsoft account. Open the official Xbox Game Pass subscription page and sign in with the account you intend to use for play, purchases, and code redemption.
- Select a plan. Compare the plan descriptions, device coverage, launch timing, catalog scope, included benefits, and cloud allowance. Do not select a plan solely because its headline game count is higher.
- Review the checkout details. Confirm the displayed local price, taxes where shown, promotional eligibility, supported platform, first billing date, recurring price, and cancellation or renewal language. Make sure the account and region are correct.
- Complete payment. Finish the Microsoft checkout flow. Keep the confirmation email or transaction record so you can identify the subscription account and next renewal date later.
- Open Game Pass on your console or PC. Sign in with the same purchasing Microsoft account. The service should appear in the Game Pass area on Xbox or in the Game Pass tab of the Xbox PC app.
If the offer shown at checkout differs from an advertisement or an older article, use the current checkout information. Promotions can be limited to new or returning subscribers and can end without notice.
Set up and install games on an Xbox console
- Sign in to the purchasing profile. On the console, use the Microsoft account that owns the subscription. A different local profile may not show the entitlement.
- Open the Game Pass area. From the console dashboard, open the Game Pass section and browse the included catalog. Use the game’s detail page to verify that the title is available for your console generation and region.
- Install a game. Select an included title and choose the install option shown by the console. Large downloads can require substantial storage and time; check the game’s listed size before starting several installations.
- Launch and manage the installation. Start the game from the installed-games area. If a title leaves the catalog or your subscription expires, the console may leave the files installed but will require an active entitlement to continue playing.
- Check multiplayer requirements. For console online play, use a plan that includes online console multiplayer, then verify any separate game-specific account or age requirements.
Installing a title does not convert it into a permanent purchase. If you want uninterrupted access after it leaves the catalog, purchase the game separately while it is available.
Set up Game Pass on a Windows PC
- Install or open the Xbox PC app. Use the official Windows Xbox app and complete any requested Windows or app updates.
- Sign in with the subscription account. The app must use the Microsoft account that bought the subscription or redeemed the code. Signing into Windows with another account can make the catalog appear unavailable.
- Open the Game Pass tab. Browse PC-compatible titles and open each game’s detail page. Check the required operating-system version, storage, graphics hardware, and whether the title supports a controller, keyboard, or both.
- Install to a suitable drive. Select an install location with enough free space. Some games require additional launchers, updates, or account sign-ins; follow the prompts shown for that specific title.
- Launch from the Xbox app or installed shortcut. Keep the app and Windows services updated if a game does not authenticate. Cloud play is not part of PC Game Pass, so PC Game Pass subscribers should plan to install and run games locally.
PC and console catalogs overlap but are not identical. A game listed in the overall service may still be unavailable for Windows, and a console entitlement does not promise a PC version.
How to redeem an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate code
A prepaid Xbox Game Pass Ultimate code can be useful as a gift or when you want to pay for a fixed period instead of entering a recurring payment method. Redeem it before installing games, because the code attaches the subscription time to one Microsoft account.

- Check the code packaging or receipt. Confirm whether it is an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate code, the duration, the country or region, and any eligibility restriction such as a new-subscriber offer.
- Open Microsoft’s official redeem-code flow. Sign in to the Microsoft account that should receive the subscription. Use the account carefully; redemption is intended for that account and may not be transferable.
- Enter the code exactly as issued. Do not share the code publicly. If the service reports that the code is invalid, already used, or unavailable in your region, stop and verify the source, characters, region, and account before trying repeatedly.
- Confirm the term before accepting. Review the plan name, duration, region, and any conversion or renewal notice displayed by Microsoft. A prepaid period can still show a future recurring-billing setting if another payment method is attached.
- Return to the console or Xbox PC app. Sign in with the same Microsoft account, open Game Pass, and browse or install eligible games.
Do not assume a code purchased in one country works in another. Region, currency, duration, and account eligibility are material parts of the offer. If the official redemption page requires a JavaScript-enabled browser, enable scripts or use a supported browser rather than relying on an unofficial code site.
Online multiplayer, cloud play, and access after cancellation
Online console multiplayer
Essential, Premium, and Ultimate each list online console multiplayer. That entitlement concerns console online play; it does not mean every game is included in the catalog or that every title has identical multiplayer rules. A game may require its own account, age approval, or network settings.
Cloud play
The plan pages list a monthly cloud-play allowance of 5 hours for Essential, 10 hours for Premium, and 15 hours for Ultimate. PC Game Pass does not include cloud play. The allowance is a plan benefit, not unlimited streaming, and the actual experience depends on supported devices, region, network quality, and the title being offered for cloud play. Recheck the current plan page if cloud gaming is the reason you are subscribing.

Access continues until you cancel or the subscription expires, or until the game leaves the Game Pass library. Canceling recurring billing normally prevents the next charge while preserving access through the paid period; read the account page’s effective date so you know when access ends. If a title leaves earlier, the catalog departure takes precedence.

Turn off automatic renewal or cancel
- Open your Microsoft account services and subscriptions area. Sign in with the account that owns Game Pass.
- Select the Game Pass subscription. Check the current plan, next billing date, payment method, and renewal amount.
- Choose the cancellation or recurring-billing control shown. Xbox states that recurring billing is switched on by default, so do not assume a prepaid or promotional signup will stop automatically.
- Read the confirmation screen. Microsoft may offer a choice between turning off recurring billing and ending access immediately. Choose the option that matches your needs and record the effective date.
- Verify the status afterward. Return to the subscription page and confirm that the next charge is no longer scheduled, or that the cancellation date is displayed.
If you subscribed through a different billing channel, such as a console marketplace, manage renewal through the account that processed the purchase. Removing the Xbox app or uninstalling a game does not cancel the subscription.
Common setup problems and fixes
The subscription does not appear
Sign out of the Xbox console or PC app and sign back in with the purchasing Microsoft account. Check the Microsoft account’s services and subscriptions page for an active entitlement. If you redeemed a code, verify that the redemption confirmation used the same account.
A game is missing from the catalog
Search the title’s detail page rather than relying on a general catalog list. The game may be limited to another platform, region, or plan, or may have left the service. Catalog counts are totals, not a promise that every named game remains available.
The code will not redeem
Check the code’s characters, region, duration, expiration or activation requirements, and account eligibility. A retailer may need to activate a physical code at purchase. If the official redemption flow reports that it has already been used, retain the receipt and contact the seller or Microsoft support rather than publishing the code or attempting random accounts.

Online console multiplayer is unavailable
Confirm that the console is online, the correct profile is signed in, and the active plan is Essential, Premium, or Ultimate. Then check the individual game’s multiplayer service, privacy settings, age restrictions, and any temporary network outage.
Cloud play is unavailable
First confirm that the plan actually includes cloud play; PC Game Pass does not. Then check whether the title, device, region, and account are supported and whether your monthly allowance remains. A fast, stable connection is also required for a usable stream.
When to change plans
Reconsider the plan at renewal when your device mix or play habits change. Move up from Essential if you now need a larger catalog, cloud hours, or faster access to Xbox-published games. Move to Ultimate when day-one releases or its bundled memberships will replace purchases you would otherwise make. Choose PC Game Pass instead when you have stopped using a console and only need Windows games. Move down when you rarely use the catalog or do not use the higher tier’s launch timing and extras.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before switching, record the current renewal date and read Microsoft’s conversion terms shown for your account. Promotional prices, catalog size, cloud allowances, and available plans can change by region and date, so make the decision from the offer currently displayed rather than an archived screenshot.
Bottom line
Set up Game Pass with the Microsoft account you will keep, verify the current local offer before paying, and install the Xbox app on each device you intend to use. Essential covers core console multiplayer, Premium adds a broader cross-device library and delayed Xbox-published releases, Ultimate is the full day-one and cloud bundle, and PC Game Pass is the Windows-focused day-one option without cloud play. Keep the renewal date and code region in your records, because both billing status and catalog membership determine whether an installed game remains playable.
