To keep pre-recorded video streaming on YouTube while your own computer is off, run OBS on a Vultr server, upload the video to that server, and enable Loop on its OBS Media Source. Vultr documents two routes: a preconfigured Broadcaster Marketplace app with browser-accessible OBS, or a self-managed Ubuntu server where you install and configure OBS yourself. The Marketplace route involves less server setup; Ubuntu offers more responsibility for the software stack and its settings.
Choose a Vultr setup
| Option | How you access OBS | What you manage |
|---|---|---|
| Vultr Broadcaster Marketplace app | OBS is preconfigured for browser access. | Deploy the app, retain its generated web password, upload media, and configure the stream. |
| Ubuntu with OBS | Remote desktop access to the server. | Install OBS and FFmpeg, configure the desktop and streaming settings, and maintain the stack. |
Vultr’s Broadcaster guide was updated July 25, 2024; its Ubuntu tutorial was updated April 1, 2025. The guides do not establish a current price or measured reliability comparison, and Marketplace availability can vary. Check Vultr’s current deployment options and pricing before creating a server.

Before you deploy
Prepare the destination and its stream key
Create or schedule a live stream on the destination platform and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. The steps below describe YouTube as the destination; platform eligibility, live-stream rules, and copyright requirements depend on YouTube’s current policies and your account.

For its Ubuntu tutorial, Vultr specifies at least 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth. These are tutorial prerequisites, not a guarantee that every workload will fit or perform well. The video resolution, frame rate, encoding load, and how much media you store all affect resource needs. Vultr suggests 720p (1280 × 720) for a server with two or more vCPUs; treat that as guidance, not a universal performance guarantee.

Plan for storage and transfer
The video must be stored where the remote OBS instance can access it. Vultr documents SFTP, FTP, SCP, and Rsync as ways to transfer files to the server. Check the file size against available storage and the server plan’s bandwidth before relying on a long-running stream.
Deploy the Broadcaster Marketplace app
- In Vultr, deploy the Broadcaster Marketplace app and wait for the instance to finish provisioning. Follow the current Vultr deployment screens; exact availability and labels may vary.
- Save the generated OBS web password securely. Use it to open the browser-accessible OBS interface, and do not share it.
- Transfer your video files to the server using SFTP, FTP, SCP, or Rsync. Vultr specifically advises uploading source files to the server for a 24/7 stream.
- Open OBS and add a source: for one video, add a Media Source, browse to the uploaded file, and enable Loop. For multiple files, use VLC Video Source and configure the playlist.
- Preview playback. Confirm the video appears and that the Audio Mixer registers the source if the clip has audio.
- Set the streaming destination and paste in the stream URL and key supplied by the platform. Check the destination and key carefully before going live.
- Start streaming in OBS, then check the destination platform’s live dashboard or watch page to confirm that the stream is active and the expected source is reaching viewers.
Set up OBS on Ubuntu instead
This route gives you responsibility for installing and configuring the streaming stack. Use Vultr’s Ubuntu tutorial for its current command sequence and prerequisites rather than assuming an installer or desktop setup not covered here.

- Deploy an Ubuntu server meeting at least the tutorial’s baseline: 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth.
- Install
obs-studioandffmpegas described in Vultr’s Ubuntu streaming-server guide, then configure remote desktop access so you can operate OBS. - Transfer the video to the server. In OBS, add a Media Source for one clip and enable Loop, or use VLC Video Source for a playlist.
- Configure the streaming service or custom stream URL and enter the stream key. Keep the key private.
- Set the canvas and output resolution and frame rate. Vultr suggests 720p for servers with two or more vCPUs and notes that higher resolution and frame rate increase processing needs.
- Set the bitrate appropriate to the selected resolution and frame rate. Vultr’s guide includes suggested bitrate ranges, but destination requirements can change; check the platform’s current recommendations and use the relevant values in OBS rather than treating a tutorial range as a universal rule.
- Enable OBS automatic reconnect settings, start streaming, and verify the live output from the destination platform. A playing OBS preview by itself does not prove the public stream is working.
Secure and monitor the server
- Protect both the OBS web credentials and the destination stream key. Change or revoke credentials if they are exposed.
- For domain-based access, Vultr recommends using a trusted SSL certificate. Restrict access to critical ports, including RTMP port 1935, to trusted IP addresses with Vultr Firewall.
- Check OBS resource usage during operation. If the stream stutters or encoding falls behind, reduce resolution or frame rate and review server load; higher settings need more processing capacity.
- Check the destination-side dashboard as well as OBS. If YouTube reports a dropped or unhealthy stream, use OBS’s reconnect behavior and confirm the server and network remain reachable.
- Review your platform’s current rules for copyright, reused content, and live streaming. A video looping technically does not establish permission to broadcast it or eligibility for monetization.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source is blank or fails to play | The file was not uploaded to the server, the path is wrong, or OBS cannot read it. | Confirm the file exists on the remote server and select that server-side path in OBS. |
| The clip ends instead of repeating | Loop is not enabled on the Media Source. | Open the source properties and enable Loop; for several clips, configure the VLC Video Source playlist. |
| OBS preview plays but the channel is not live | Streaming was not started, the destination URL or key is incorrect, or the destination rejected the stream. | Check OBS’s stream destination and status, then confirm the destination dashboard shows an active stream. |
| Stream disconnects | A server or network interruption, platform-side drop, or resource issue may have stopped output. | Check server availability and OBS status; enable automatic reconnect in the Ubuntu workflow and verify the stream again at the destination. |
| Video stutters or encoding struggles | The chosen resolution or frame rate may exceed available processing capacity. | Review OBS resource usage and lower output settings; Vultr’s 720p suggestion for two or more vCPUs is tutorial guidance, not a guarantee. |
| Unable to open remote OBS or server access | Credentials may be incorrect, or access may be blocked by firewall or remote-access configuration. | Check the saved Marketplace web password or Ubuntu remote desktop setup, and review firewall rules without exposing management access broadly. |
Or let it run in the cloud
