To activate voice commands on a Samsung Galaxy phone, choose the feature that matches what you want to do: set up Bixby or Google Assistant for spoken requests, or enable Voice Access to control the screen by voice. For Bixby, the general path is Settings > Advanced features > Bixby > Voice registration; register your voice and choose a wake-up phrase. Menu names and availability vary by model, software, region, and language.
Choose the kind of voice control you need
Samsung offers several voice features, and they do different jobs. Bixby and Google Assistant respond to requests as digital assistants. Voice Access is designed to navigate and operate the phone screen with spoken commands.

Activate Bixby voice wake-up
Samsung’s general setup route is Settings > Advanced features > Bixby > Voice registration. Bixby requires a Samsung account. Follow the prompts to register your voice and choose a wake-up phrase; afterward, say that phrase to wake Bixby.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features > Bixby.
- Tap Voice registration.
- Allow any requested permissions, complete the voice-registration prompts, and select a wake-up phrase.
- Say the selected phrase when you want to start Bixby.
If you skipped voice wake-up during Bixby’s initial setup, Samsung says you can configure it later in Bixby settings. The precise labels can differ across devices and software versions.

Use a button instead
After setup, press and hold the configured Side button or Bixby button, depending on your Galaxy model and settings. On some phones, the Side button is configured to show the power menu instead. In that case, Bixby can still be opened from its app.
Use Voice Access to control the screen
If you mean spoken commands for navigating the phone—not asking an assistant a question—turn on Voice Access. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Interaction and dexterity > Voice Access, then switch it on. Samsung gives “Go Home” and “Show notifications” as examples of Voice Access commands.

Voice Access is distinct from Bixby or Google Assistant: it is the option for spoken screen navigation and control.
Set up Google Assistant instead
Samsung’s guide describes setting Google as the default digital assistant at Settings > Apps > Choose default apps > Digital assistant app. Select Google, then configure access through the Side button or “Hey Google.” The Side button may need to be assigned to the digital assistant in the phone’s settings.

- Open Settings > Apps > Choose default apps.
- Tap Digital assistant app and choose Google.
- Configure the Side button if you want to start the assistant by pressing and holding it.
- For voice activation, set up Voice Match in your Google account’s data and privacy settings, then use “Hey Google.”
Samsung states that Google Assistant is supported on Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 5.0 or higher. Its guide also says, “Seamless action across apps is not supported”; that qualification is Samsung’s statement in this guide, not a claim about every Google Assistant feature.
Fix Bixby if it does not respond to the wake phrase
- Check that Voice wake-up is enabled in Bixby settings.
- Register your voice again if Bixby is not recognizing the phrase.
- Adjust wake-up sensitivity in the Voice wake-up settings.
- Use Bixby settings to delete voice recordings if you want to remove them.
When the settings path does not match
Samsung cautions that Bixby availability, features, content, and menus can vary by country or region, language, device model, and software version. If a listed menu is missing, search Settings for Bixby or Voice Access, then follow the matching result for your phone. Samsung’s published route is a general guide, not a guarantee that every Galaxy device has identical labels or features.
