To upload a video in YouTube Studio, sign in to the correct channel, select CREATE → Upload videos, choose your file, complete its details, then set visibility or a publication time and save. Uploading imports the file; publishing makes it available to viewers. You can finish the setup on desktop or use the YouTube Studio mobile app.
Upload a video on desktop
- Sign in to YouTube Studio with the channel where you want the video to appear.
- In the upper-right corner, select CREATE, then Upload videos.
- Select a video file. YouTube Help says you can select up to 15 videos at a time. To enter details for a file, select Edit next to it.
- Add the video’s title and description, choose its audience, and complete other available details. The flow may also offer subtitles or captions, cards, and end screens.
- Review Checks for copyright issues. If your channel is in the YouTube Partner Program, the flow also includes ad-suitability review and monetization controls.
- Under Visibility, select Private, Unlisted, or Public, or schedule the video. Review your selection and click SAVE.
YouTube Help lists a 100-character title limit. Its mobile guidance lists a 5,000-character description limit. These are YouTube-published interface limits; check the current upload flow in case they change.

Choose who can watch and when

YouTube distinguishes importing a file from making it available: “When you upload a video, the video file is imported to YouTube.” “When you publish a video, the video is made available for anyone to watch.” For a public video, you can also choose an instant Premiere.
Understand processing and copyright checks
YouTube says a video can be published once standard-definition (SD) processing is complete. High-definition (HD) and 4K processing can take longer; processing time depends on factors including video quality, duration, format, and traffic. If the video is not ready to watch in higher resolution right away, that does not necessarily mean the upload failed.

Copyright checks run in the background, and YouTube says you can publish while they are still running. A clean result is not legal clearance or a guarantee against future claims: later manual claims, strikes, or changes to settings can still affect a video. For enrolled creators, likeness detection may also run in the background. YouTube says these checks do not restrict visibility, although a video may later be removed if it violates policy.
Upload from a phone
You can upload through either the YouTube app or the YouTube Studio app. The Studio app is useful when you want to manage a video within Studio, though some features differ from desktop: for example, YouTube says creators cannot self-certify video ratings through the Studio app.

- Open the YouTube Studio app and tap Create.
- Select the video file on your device.
- Add its details, privacy and monetization settings, and audience selection.
- Tap Upload video.
The standard YouTube app has a separate upload flow. Some short vertical or square videos may be treated as Shorts, depending on their duration and YouTube’s current rules.
Check file and account requirements first
- Video length: YouTube Help says videos longer than 15 minutes require a verified Google Account.
- File size and duration ceiling: YouTube lists a maximum of 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less.
- Large files: YouTube recommends an up-to-date browser for files larger than 20 GB.
- Audio-only files: YouTube says it cannot upload an audio-only file as a video. To use audio, create a video file by adding an image with video-editing software.
- Vertical and square video: YouTube says you do not need to add black bars at the sides.
These limits and requirements come from YouTube Help, whose pages do not display publication dates. They can change; check YouTube’s current verification and feature-eligibility guidance if your upload exceeds the default duration.

If the upload window closes before you finish
If you close the desktop upload window before selecting visibility, YouTube says the unfinished upload is saved as private on the Studio Content page. Return to that page to continue setting it up.

You need a video file and access to the YouTube channel you want to use. YouTube’s creator tips say, “There is no need for fancy equipment, what you have at hand will do.” A camera, microphone, or other physical product is not required to carry out the upload steps.
