In Vivaldi for desktop, use Tab Stacks to group related pages inside a context and Workspaces to separate larger contexts such as work and research. Configure the relevant actions under Settings > Keyboard, or use Quick Commands when you want to find or run an action without remembering its shortcut. Stacks and Workspaces work together: a Workspace can contain several stacks and individual tabs.
Choose what belongs in a Tab Stack and what belongs in a Workspace
A Tab Stack groups related tabs within a Workspace—for example, several pages for one project. A Workspace separates a broader set of tabs, such as work from personal browsing. Vivaldi describes Workspaces as a way to group pages related to different topics in the same window. Use both levels when a broad context contains several smaller groups.

Create a Tab Stack
Drag one tab onto another
- Drag a tab onto the tab you want to group it with.
- Release when the target tab shows the theme highlight. The tabs form a stack.
- To name or color it, open the stack’s context menu and choose Edit.
If dragging only reorders tabs, check Settings > Tabs > Tab Features > Tab Stack Options and enable Allow Stacking by Drag and Drop. The same area contains Stacking Drop Delay, which you can adjust if an ordinary reorder accidentally creates a stack.
Stack selected tabs or group by host
- Select a consecutive range with Shift-click, or select separate tabs with Ctrl-click on Windows/Linux or ⌘-click on macOS.
- Right-click one of the selected tabs and choose Stack # Selected Tabs. You can also run Stack Tabs from Quick Commands.
To group tabs from the same domain, open a tab’s context menu and choose Stack (# Tabs by Host – website.com). To group tabs from different domains according to their hosts, choose Stack Tabs by Hosts.

Have related links open into a stack
These two settings control different behaviors:
- Enable Open Tabs in Current Tab Stack at Settings > Tabs > Tab Features > Tab Stack Options to collect tabs opened from links in the current stack.
- Set Settings > Tabs > New Tab Position > As Tab Stack with Related Tab to create a stack from the active tab and a newly opened link tab.
Pick a Tab Stack display and manage its tabs
Choose a layout at Settings > Tabs > Tab Features > Tab Stacking. The right choice depends on how much tab-bar space you want the stack to use and whether you prefer its members to stay visible.

Use the stack’s context menu and choose Edit to rename or recolor it. To remove one member but keep the rest grouped, right-click that tab and choose Remove from Tab Stack. To dissolve a stack, right-click it and choose Stack, or run Unstack Tabs from Quick Commands.

Pinning a stack protects it and its member tabs from accidental closure. Its context menu also offers actions such as hibernating the stack, bookmarking it, copying its links, saving an individual session, tiling, reloading, and moving it to another Workspace or window.
Create and organize Workspaces
Add a Workspace
- Click the Workspaces button on the Tab Bar and choose New Workspace.
- Choose whether the Workspace starts empty or moves the tabs in the current window.
- Enter a name and choose an icon.
You can also run Create New Workspace in Quick Commands. To make a Workspace from tabs already open, select those tabs, right-click, and choose Move # Tabs > Workspace > Create Workspace with Selected Tabs.

Rename, reorder, and move tabs
Use the Workspaces menu to rename a Workspace or change its icon. New Workspaces are added at the bottom of the list; drag them to reorder. To move tabs between Workspaces, drag them between Workspace folders in the Window Panel, or use the tab context menu’s Move Tab or Move # Tabs > Workspace command.
A Workspace can be open in only one browser window at a time. If you select one that is already open in another window, Vivaldi focuses that window rather than opening a duplicate in the current one. Deleting a Workspace closes its tabs, so move any tabs you want to keep before deleting it.

Optionally route tabs with Workspace Rules
For automatic sorting, open Settings > Tabs > Workspaces, select Add New Workspace Rule, set the criteria, and choose the destination Workspace. Vivaldi’s documented example sends URLs containing bbc.com to a News Workspace. Rules are optional; you can organize tabs manually instead.

Choose a method that suits your routine. Visual controls work well if you change Workspace order often; keyboard shortcuts suit a stable order and frequent switching.

- Workspaces menu: click the Workspaces button on the Tab Bar and select a Workspace.
- Quick Commands: search for a Workspace by name, or run Next Workspace or Previous Workspace.
- Mouse wheel: scroll over the Workspaces button.
- Window Panel: select a Workspace there.
- Vivaldi menu: use Window > Other Workspaces and Tabs.
- Keyboard: Vivaldi’s Workspaces help gives Ctrl+Shift+3 on Windows/Linux and ⌘+Shift+3 on macOS as an example for switching to the third Workspace. It also documents configurable shortcuts for Next Workspace and Previous Workspace.
The third-Workspace combination is an example, not a guaranteed active binding: shortcuts may have been changed or may differ with a customized setup. Check your Keyboard settings before relying on it.
Set up and maintain keyboard shortcuts
Assign a shortcut to an action
- Open Settings > Keyboard and find the action you want.
- Focus its shortcut field and press the desired key combination.
- If the combination is already assigned to that action and you want to replace it, remove the existing binding first. Vivaldi allows multiple shortcuts for one action.
For tab selection, look under Settings > Keyboard > Tabs. Vivaldi’s Quick Commands include Select Previous Tab, Select Next Tab, Select Related Tabs, and Deselect Tabs. You can also select a consecutive range with Shift-click or separate tabs with Ctrl-click on Windows/Linux or ⌘-click on macOS.
Clear, restore, and find shortcuts
To remove a binding, hover over it and choose Clear Shortcut, or select it and press Backspace/Delete. Use Restore Default Shortcut to restore one action, or Restore Default Keys to restore all keys. The shortcut cheat sheet opens with Ctrl+F1 on Windows/Linux or ⌘+F1 on macOS; Settings > Keyboard also lists shortcuts.

Resolve conflicts with website shortcuts
Some websites use the same key combinations as Vivaldi. To make a browser binding take priority, add it under Settings > Keyboard > Browser Priority Shortcuts. Vivaldi also documents a per-site Prioritize Website Shortcuts setting under Settings > Privacy and Security > Website Permissions.
If a setting or shortcut is not where you expect
Settings labels and available routes can vary by release or platform, and shortcuts can be customized. If a listed path does not match your installation, search in Settings or use Quick Commands to find the action. The documented Workspace shortcut examples should be treated as examples rather than assumed defaults.
