What should you do if sports betting is affecting your finances or well-being? Stop betting for now, put barriers between yourself and further bets, protect money needed for essentials, and tell someone you trust. You do not need a diagnosis—or to wait until things get worse—to ask for help. If you may harm yourself or cannot stay safe, contact emergency or urgent mental health support where you are; a gambling helpline is not a substitute for emergency care.
How to recognize when betting is causing harm
There is no single sign that proves someone has a gambling disorder. But changes in your betting, finances, mood, or relationships are good reasons to seek support. The NHS guidance on help for gambling problems and GamCare’s warning signs describe patterns such as:

- Betting more often, for longer, or with more money than you intended.
- Thinking about betting frequently, finding it hard to stop, or returning to try to win back losses.
- Borrowing, taking out loans, selling possessions, missing bills, or hiding where money has gone.
- Withdrawing from friends, family, work, or other activities to bet; lying about the time or money involved; or using betting to escape difficult feelings.
- Feeling anxious, stressed, guilty, or low, or noticing changes in sleep and relationships.
The NHS self-assessment asks about these kinds of experiences, including chasing losses, betting more than you can afford, and feeling stress or guilt. It says a score of 8 or more suggests gambling-related harms are likely; a score of 1–7 may still indicate a negative impact. It is a screening aid, not a diagnosis, and you do not need to complete it before asking for help.
What to do right now if you feel out of control
1. Stop the session and interrupt access
Step away from the app, website, or venue. Do not place another bet to recover money you have lost: chasing losses can increase the financial harm. If you can, log out, remove betting apps, and use account or device restrictions to make it harder to return in the moment. These barriers can help create distance, but they are not a complete treatment plan.

2. Ask someone you trust to help protect money
Tell one person what is happening and ask for a specific, practical form of help—for example, sitting with you while you contact support or helping you make a plan to keep essential money available for bills. GamCare suggests asking someone trusted to help protect your money. This is an option, not a requirement, and it does not replace professional advice.
3. Contact a support service
In the UK, the NHS lists the National Gambling Helpline, run by GamCare, at 0808 8020 133; it is free and available 24/7. GamCare says its support is free and confidential. See GamCare’s FAQs for people experiencing gambling harm. If you are outside the UK, use a locally verified gambling-support service.

How to put barriers between yourself and betting
Different barriers cover different routes to betting. Availability, coverage, and terms depend on where you live and can change, so check the current conditions with the provider before relying on a tool.
Recommended Free Tools
| Barrier | What it can restrict | Coverage and geography |
|---|---|---|
| Self-exclusion | Access to an operator’s betting services, or—in some schemes—multiple operators. | The UK Gambling Commission describes self-exclusion as a formal agreement and identifies multi-operator schemes, including GAMSTOP ONLINE for online operators. Check the scheme’s current coverage and terms. |
| Gambling transaction block | Card payments identified as gambling transactions. | Ask your bank whether it offers this feature and how its block works. It may not cover every payment route. |
| Blocking software or device restrictions | Access to selected gambling websites or apps on covered devices. | Coverage depends on the software and its settings; it may not block every route or device. |
| Venue exclusion | Entry to or betting at a participating betting venue. | Ask the venue or relevant scheme about local availability, participating locations, and current terms. |
The UK Gambling Commission’s self-exclusion guidance explains the formal process and schemes. Treat any block as one layer of protection, not as proof that the problem is resolved.

Protect bills and deal with debt concerns
Work out which essential costs are due next—such as housing, utilities, food, and transport—and make a short plan to keep those funds separate from betting money. If timing is a problem, consider arranging bill payments for payday. Do not ignore debts or treat another bet as a way to fix them.
GamCare’s advice is direct: “Gambling should never be viewed as a way to make money or overcome financial difficulties.” Its money guidance offers one-to-one support in England, Wales, and Scotland and can refer people who need specialist debt advice. The NHS also advises dealing with debts and points to National Debtline. Choose a debt-advice service appropriate to your location and circumstances.

Find treatment and ongoing support
Support is available whether or not you identify with a label such as “addiction.” In England, the NHS page describes specialist gambling treatment clinics. GamCare offers UK support, including its helpline and self-help resources such as its recovery toolkit. The NHS states: “There is support and treatment available if you need it.” If you live elsewhere in the UK or outside it, check which services cover your nation or country; the services listed here are not a complete international directory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGet urgent help if your safety is at risk
If gambling is seriously affecting your mental health, seek urgent mental health support. If you may harm yourself, or cannot keep yourself safe, contact the emergency service or urgent mental health service where you are now. NICE guidance on gambling-related harms covers assessment and management; urgent danger should be handled through local crisis or emergency care rather than waiting for routine gambling support.
