That distinction is about transaction visibility, not a guarantee that either currency makes a user anonymous. With Zcash, the transaction mode and the wallet’s behavior determine which privacy features are used.
How Bitcoin and Zcash handle transaction privacy
Bitcoin transactions are recorded on a public blockchain. Anyone can inspect confirmed transactions, including their inputs, outputs, amounts, and the addresses or scripts involved. Bitcoin Core’s privacy documentation puts it plainly: “Every confirmed Bitcoin transaction is published to the blockchain where anyone can see it.” Bitcoin Core privacy documentation

Zcash supports both transparent and shielded transactions. Transparent Zcash exposes public transaction information, while shielded Zcash encrypts transaction details and uses zero-knowledge proofs to let the network validate transactions according to its rules. Shielding is an available mode, not a property of every Zcash transaction. Zcash Foundation: shielded and transparent Zcash Zcash Foundation: zk-SNARKs

Bitcoin: a public record, not an automatic real name
Bitcoin transactions spend earlier outputs and create new outputs. The public chain links those transactions, making activity associated with an address or key traceable over time. That does not mean an address inherently identifies its owner: Bitcoin is pseudonymous, and connecting an identifier to a person requires other information. Reusing addresses or keys, using identifiable services, or exposing other metadata can make that connection easier. - BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Zcash: visibility depends on the transaction mode
For transparent Zcash activity, holdings and financial history associated with transparent addresses are public. For shielded activity, the Zcash Foundation describes transaction addresses, amounts, and memo fields as private. Some wallets can automatically shield funds received transparently, but wallet behavior varies. Zcash Foundation: Is Zcash traceable?
Shielding transaction details does not establish protection against information revealed outside the transaction itself—for example, by a person, service, or compromised device. The protocol’s privacy mode should not be confused with a guarantee that a user’s identity or every aspect of their activity is hidden.

How verification works
Transparent Bitcoin and Zcash transactions can be checked against public transaction records. With shielded Zcash, the blockchain may not reveal enough information for an observer to reconstruct and independently inspect the full payment. Shielded transactions can still be validated by the network; zero-knowledge proofs allow that validation without publishing the encrypted transaction details. Zcash Foundation: zk-SNARKs

Zcash Improvement Proposal 311 describes a separate option for proving selected payment details. For transparent-address transactions, a sender can provide a transaction ID so a recipient can check that the payment was mined. When shielded addresses are involved, the sender can create a disclosure that proves selected facts, such as the amount received, without revealing unrelated addresses or transactions. ZIP 311 is marked Draft, so this is a specified mechanism—not evidence that every wallet provides a polished disclosure feature. ZIP 311: Unified Addresses and Unified Viewing Keys

Comparison at a glance
| Question | Bitcoin | Zcash |
|---|---|---|
| Transaction modes | Transactions are publicly recorded on the blockchain. | Supports transparent and shielded transactions; the mode used affects visibility. |
| What is visible on-chain? | Inputs, outputs, amounts, and involved addresses or scripts are inspectable. | Transparent transactions expose public information; shielded transactions conceal transaction details described by the Zcash Foundation. |
| How does the network validate transactions? | Public transaction inputs and outputs are recorded and linked on the chain. | Shielded transactions use zero-knowledge proofs to support consensus validation while details remain encrypted. |
| How can someone check a payment? | Inspect the public transaction record. | Inspect transparent records directly; a shielded payment may require a sender-created disclosure to prove selected details. |
| Does public activity reveal a real identity? | Not by itself. Linking an address to a person depends on other information and usage patterns. | Transparent activity is public; shielded mode conceals specified transaction details, but does not establish that off-chain identity is hidden. |
Why the Zcash wallet matters
A Zcash wallet may shield by default, let you choose between transparent and shielded transactions, or support only transparent transactions. The currency’s name alone does not tell you which mode a particular payment will use. Before relying on shielded features, check the wallet’s documented capabilities, defaults, and the mode selected for the transaction. Zcash Foundation: How to use Zcash
At the protocol level, transparent addresses include P2SH and P2PKH formats. The Zcash Protocol Specification recommends unified payment addresses for new applications unless compatibility requires older formats; this is protocol guidance, not a recommendation for a particular consumer wallet. Which difference matters most?
If your main concern is what a stranger can learn from the public blockchain, Bitcoin transactions are public by default, while Zcash gives users a choice of transparent or shielded transaction modes. That choice comes with a practical check: confirm that the wallet supports the mode you intend to use and understand how it handles incoming and outgoing funds. For payment auditing, public records are directly inspectable; shielded payment details are not public by default, though selected facts may be disclosed using mechanisms such as the one specified in Draft ZIP 311.
These are differences in transaction privacy and verification, not a basis for calling Bitcoin anonymous or claiming that all Zcash transactions are private. Zcash’s Orchard shielded payment protocol, introduced with Network Upgrade 5 in May 2022, uses the Halo 2 zero-knowledge proving system. Zcash Foundation: zk-SNARKs
