To set up iOS 16’s Weather wallpaper, open the Lock Screen gallery, choose Weather, then tap Add or Done and select how to apply it. Apple describes the wallpaper as showing live weather conditions as they change throughout the day. Weather widgets are separate optional items, not part of the wallpaper itself.
Set up the Weather wallpaper on an iPhone

Wake your iPhone and touch and hold the Lock Screen. If the Lock Screen gallery does not appear, touch and hold it again and enter your passcode.

Tap the Add New Lock Screen Wallpaper control.

Choose Weather from the wallpaper options. If you do not see it right away, scroll to the additional choices and tap Get below the Weather option.

Adjust any controls shown for this wallpaper. Available customization depends on the wallpaper; do not expect every control used for photo wallpapers to appear for Weather.

Tap Add or Done. Then choose Set as Wallpaper Pair or Customize Home Screen.
Apple’s Lock Screen setup guide documents creating and customizing Lock Screens. To edit an existing one, touch and hold the Lock Screen, swipe to the Lock Screen you want, and tap Customize. You can create multiple Lock Screens, switch between them, and link one to a Focus.
What the dynamic Weather wallpaper shows
Weather is a built-in Lock Screen wallpaper choice introduced with iOS 16. Apple says it lets you see “live weather conditions as they change throughout the day.” The wallpaper changes the background presentation to reflect conditions; it is not a forecast panel or a separately added widget. Apple’s iOS 16 announcement, published September 12, 2022, describes the feature.

Weather wallpaper vs. Weather widgets
The wallpaper is a background style. Lock Screen widgets are separate information elements you can add where supported. Apple’s iOS 16 update notes describe Lock Screen widgets that can show information at a glance, including weather. Apple’s current widget help gives examples such as temperature and air quality.
- Choose Weather wallpaper if you want the Lock Screen background itself to reflect changing weather conditions.
- Add a Weather widget if you want specific details displayed as glanceable information.
- Use both if you want the weather-themed background as well as a separate information element.
If Weather is missing from the wallpaper gallery
- Scroll through the choices. Weather may be among the additional wallpaper options; tap Get beneath it if that control appears.
- Re-enter the gallery. Touch and hold the Lock Screen again. If prompted, enter your passcode before choosing Add New Lock Screen Wallpaper.
- Check your iOS version. Weather was introduced as an iOS 16 Lock Screen wallpaper option. Apple’s general iOS 16 notes say some features may not be available on every Apple device or in every region, and do not provide a Weather-wallpaper-specific compatibility matrix.
What Apple does not specify
Apple’s cited documentation does not state a refresh interval, explain the wallpaper’s technical weather-data source, or give a feature-specific device and region list. It is therefore not possible to infer a particular update cadence or a minimum supported iPhone model from these sources.
