Microsoft’s 2015 Xbox Music integration let you put owned music files in OneDrive’s Music folder and access them through Xbox Music without an Xbox Music Pass. That is a historical feature description, not confirmation that the same workflow works on current Xbox or Windows releases: Microsoft’s official material documents it through 2017, and current availability is unconfirmed.
How the OneDrive music integration worked
On March 18, 2015, Microsoft announced that music uploaded to a user’s OneDrive Music folder would appear in the Xbox Music collection. The documented setup was to upload owned music files, then sign in to Xbox Music with the relevant Microsoft/Xbox account. Microsoft also described playlists combining a user’s OneDrive tracks with Xbox Music Pass music. Microsoft’s announcement framed the personal collection as free to access without a Music Pass.

Devices named in the 2015 announcement
Microsoft listed Xbox Music apps for Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Music on the web. Those are the platforms documented at the time; the announcement does not establish support on today’s software versions.
Did you need an Xbox Music Pass?
No. Microsoft said the OneDrive personal-music feature did not require an Xbox Music Pass. The Pass was relevant to streaming catalog music, not to the basic ability to access your owned collection through the feature. Microsoft’s April 2015 explanation also described a historical storage arrangement: OneDrive users had 15 GB of free storage, while active Xbox Music Pass subscribers received an additional 100 GB for music. Microsoft later updated the original post to say the free-storage offer was no longer valid, so neither figure should be treated as a current OneDrive allowance. Microsoft’s April 2015 explanation gives that period-specific detail.

How Groove Music changed the feature
Microsoft later renamed Xbox Music as Groove Music. Groove-era documentation described uploading music from a PC to OneDrive and making a playlist available across Windows, Xbox, Android, iOS, and Sonos. In September 2015, Microsoft separately announced Sonos support: users could add MP3 or iTunes tracks to OneDrive and select Groove in the Sonos app. These are historical platform references, not evidence that those integrations remain supported now. Microsoft’s Sonos announcement described that integration.
What happened to Groove Music Pass?
On October 2, 2017, Microsoft announced that Groove Music Pass streaming, music purchases, and downloads would end after December 31, 2017. Microsoft said the Groove app would continue to play and manage owned music. In other words, the subscription catalog service ended, while Microsoft’s stated plan retained playback and management for music users already owned. Microsoft’s 2017 announcement explains the change.

Does Xbox still support OneDrive music?
Microsoft’s official sources document the Xbox Music and Groove OneDrive collection workflow through 2017, but do not confirm that the exact integration is available on current 2026 Xbox or Windows releases. If you want to use it today, check current Xbox and Microsoft support information for your console, Windows version, and account before moving or deleting files on the assumption that Xbox can stream them from OneDrive. The older announcement is useful for understanding what the feature was, but it is not a current compatibility guarantee.
