To add Streamlabs chat to a live scene, create a Chat Box source in Streamlabs Desktop or the Streamlabs OBS Plugin, or copy the widget URL from the Streamlabs Dashboard and add it as a browser source in OBS. Then size and position it, choose the right theme, and keep the source running across scene changes if you want chat and its notifications to persist.
Choose how to add the widget
Streamlabs configures the Chat Box widget; your streaming software displays it as a source. Pick the route that matches your setup:

Streamlabs’ official setup guide, published February 9, 2023 and last updated July 9, 2026, documents the direct widget routes and behavior settings. Its widget URL instructions also describe the browser-source method. Interface labels may change over time.
Add Chat Box in Streamlabs Desktop
- Open Streamlabs Desktop and select the add-source control in the editor.
- Choose Widgets, then Chat Box, and add the source.
- If prompted to add a new source or an existing one, choose the existing source if the same Chat Box is already in your scene collection. This avoids duplicate sources and possible duplicate sounds.
- Resize and position the Chat Box in the scene preview. Open its settings to adjust appearance and behavior.
If the style is wrong
Direct Streamlabs Desktop and Plugin sources use the active Widget Theme. Check which theme is active, and check whether the scene collection has a theme override. Streamlabs’ theme guide, published May 14, 2024 and last updated July 8, 2026, explains that an inactive theme can instead be used through its widget URL as a browser source.

Add Chat Box with the Streamlabs Plugin for OBS
- Install the Streamlabs Plugin for OBS and sign in.
- Open the plugin’s Widgets tab.
- Select Add beside Chat Box.
- Open the widget’s settings button to configure it, then place and size the source in your scene.
Add Chat Box to OBS as a browser source
- In the Streamlabs Dashboard, open Chat Box and copy its Widget URL.
- In OBS, add a Browser source to the scene.
- Paste the Widget URL into the source’s URL field and confirm.
- Adjust width, height, and FPS in the browser source properties if the preview does not fit or render as expected.
The URL is unique to the widget configuration. Treat it as private: do not publish your own URL or copy another creator’s. The same browser-source approach works in compatible streaming software, though its exact source labels may differ.
Keep the Chat Box working across scene changes
In the Chat Box browser properties, uncheck Shutdown source when not visible. Streamlabs recommends this because shutting down an invisible source can interrupt timed settings and clear chat when you switch scenes.

If you use Chat Notifications and want their sounds in multiple scenes, include the Chat Box source in each scene where you want to hear them. You can place it beneath a full-screen visual layer so the chat itself is hidden while the source remains present.

Troubleshoot common problems
The Chat Box does not appear
- Confirm that the source was added to the scene you are previewing or streaming.
- For a browser source, check that the Widget URL was pasted into the URL field and that the source has usable width and height.
- For the Desktop or Plugin route, check the active theme and any scene-collection theme override.
The widget disappears or chat clears after switching scenes
Open the source’s browser properties and uncheck Shutdown source when not visible. If you rely on Chat Notifications, also make sure the source is present in each scene where you need the sounds.
The intended theme is not applied
Direct Desktop and Plugin sources follow the active theme. Activate the theme you want, or copy that theme’s widget URL and use it in a browser source if it is not active.

Messages or bot commands are cluttering the overlay
