To show a GIF when someone tips your livestream, set up a tip alert with the service that receives the tip, choose a GIF for its Tips event, then add that service’s alert widget to the scene you broadcast. Save and test it before going live. This guide uses Streamlabs for the step-by-step setup; StreamElements is a separate option with its own tipping page and alerts.
Set up a Streamlabs tip GIF
- Sign in and connect the right channel. Open Streamlabs and go to Alert Box settings. Link the streaming account or platform needed for the events you want to receive. Settings labels can change; if the names differ, use the service’s current alert settings.
- Choose the Tips event. Customize its image, text, sound, and other alert settings. Streamlabs lists GIF (
.gif) as a supported Alert Box image format, alongside PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, WebM, and MP4. Its guide does not establish a universal maximum GIF size or duration, so check the current uploader’s requirements if an asset will not load. - Save the alert. If you want larger tips to show a different animation, add an alert variation, set a condition such as a minimum tip amount, and assign its GIF. Streamlabs’ example uses a GIF for tips of $10 or more; that is an illustration, not a required threshold.
- Add the alert to your broadcast scene. In Streamlabs Desktop, add the Alert Box source. In another compatible streaming program, copy the alert widget URL and add it as a Browser Source. Place and size it where it will be visible without covering important content.
- Test before going live. Trigger a test alert from the dashboard. Check the animation, text, sound, timing, and placement in the scene that will actually be broadcast, then save any changes.
- Use the matching tip link. If you use Streamlabs tip alerts, share your Streamlabs donation link. Streamlabs says a viewer’s tip must use that link for the corresponding Streamlabs tip alert to appear.
Streamlabs’ guide by Ethan May, last updated October 2, 2025, illustrates a variation this way: “Now when someone tips $10 or more, my viewers will see a gif of my dog holding some money.” The amount and animation are examples; configure your own conditions and asset.

Using StreamElements instead
StreamElements provides a separate tipping and overlay workflow: create an account, set up a tipping panel that directs viewers to your StreamElements tipping page, and configure its overlays or Alertbox. Add and manage the overlay in compatible streaming software, including through a browser source where supported, then test it in the active scene.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep the tip destination and alert provider matched. A Streamlabs donation link should not be expected to trigger a StreamElements alert, or the reverse; each service handles its own event routing and settings.

Fix donation GIFs that do not appear
- The widget is missing from the live scene: Confirm the Alert Box or browser source is present in the scene currently being broadcast and is not hidden.
- The wrong account or event is connected: Check that the intended provider account/channel is linked and the Tips event is enabled.
- The viewer used a different tip destination: For Streamlabs tips, verify that the viewer used your Streamlabs donation link.
- The overlay has stale settings: Save the alert settings, refresh or reload the widget, and trigger another test alert.
- A different variation played: Review the amount conditions. A tip below a variation’s minimum may use the default alert or another matching variation.
- The GIF or sound is wrong or absent: Recheck the selected asset and audio settings, then test again. The documented support for GIF format does not establish a universal size or duration limit.
Keep tips distinct from other events
Tips or donations are not interchangeable with Twitch Bits, YouTube Super Chats, subscriptions, or charity fundraising; services treat these as distinct event types. Configure the specific event you want to display. Payment availability and platform rules may depend on region and account, so check the provider’s current settings rather than assuming every event or payment method is available everywhere.
Or let it run in the cloud
Donation GIFs are configured in your alert provider and streaming software. If your separate goal is keeping a prerecorded YouTube channel live around the clock, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud; it does not stream a live camera or send to platforms other than YouTube.
