To connect Telegram to n8n, create a bot with Telegram’s @BotFather, copy its API token into an n8n Telegram credential, then use Telegram Trigger to receive updates and a Telegram action node to send replies or notifications. The details that usually decide whether it works are the destination’s chat ID, administrator permissions for channels, and a reachable HTTPS webhook for self-hosted n8n.

What the n8n–Telegram integration does
The integration connects Telegram’s Bot API to an n8n workflow. A Telegram Trigger starts a workflow when Telegram sends an update, such as a new message. A Telegram action node can then send a reply, post a notification, process a media-related event, or continue a human-approval flow.

The same bot credential is used by the trigger and Telegram action nodes. That means the token you create once in Telegram becomes the authentication method for the workflow’s incoming and outgoing operations. Keep the token private: Telegram’s official guidance states, “Everyone who has your token will have full control over your bot.”
A basic workflow looks like this:
- Telegram user sends a message to the bot.
- Telegram delivers an update to the Telegram Trigger.
- n8n reads the update, including the originating chat ID.
- A Telegram node sends a response to that chat or another configured destination.
What you need before starting
- A Telegram account that can message
@BotFather. - An n8n workspace or self-hosted n8n instance where you can create credentials and workflows.
- A clear test destination: a direct chat, group, public channel, or private channel.
- For self-hosted webhook delivery, a stable, publicly reachable HTTPS address for n8n.
Decide whether the bot will only answer direct messages or also post to groups and channels. Permissions and identifier formats differ by destination, so choosing this early prevents many “message sent successfully but nothing appeared” tests.

Create the Telegram bot with BotFather
Start the bot-creation conversation
- Open Telegram and search for the official
@BotFatheraccount. - Send
/newbot. - Follow the prompts for a display name and a username.
- Copy the API token BotFather returns and store it as a secret.
Telegram’s own tutorial describes the process as contacting @BotFather, issuing /newbot, and following the steps until a new token is provided.
Choose a valid username
The username must be 5–32 characters long, use Latin letters, numbers, or underscores, and end in bot. Telegram documents that the username cannot be changed later, so check spelling and branding before confirming it. The display name is what people see; the username is the unique handle used to find the bot.

Protect the token
Treat the token like a password. Do not put it in workflow text, screenshots, public repositories, issue reports, or chat messages. If it is exposed, use BotFather to revoke or regenerate it, replace the value in n8n, and test every workflow that uses the credential. A token leak is not limited to one workflow: anyone holding it can control the bot through Telegram’s API.
Add the bot token to n8n
- Open the n8n credentials area and create a new credential of the Telegram type.
- Paste the BotFather token into the credential’s Access Token field.
- Save the credential and give it a recognizable name, such as the bot’s purpose or environment.
- In each Telegram Trigger or Telegram action node, select this saved credential.
The credential is shared by Telegram and Telegram Trigger nodes. Saving it centrally avoids copying secrets into individual nodes and makes token rotation a single maintenance task. If n8n reports an authentication error immediately, verify that you copied the complete token, did not add spaces or quotation marks, and are using the newly regenerated value if the previous token was revoked.
Receive updates with Telegram Trigger
Add and configure the trigger
- Create a new n8n workflow.
- Add a Telegram Trigger node.
- Select the Telegram credential you created.
- Choose the event that should start the workflow, such as a new message or another supported Telegram update.
- Execute the node for a manual test.
Leave the workflow in manual execution while you establish the connection. Send /start or a short text message to the bot from Telegram, then inspect the execution data in n8n. The update should contain the incoming message and the chat information associated with it. That captured chat data is the safest way to obtain the destination for a direct reply.

Use the update data instead of guessing IDs
Telegram updates contain nested fields, and the exact field you map depends on the event and node version. Rather than typing an ID from memory, open a successful trigger execution and select the chat identifier from its output when configuring the next node. This also confirms that the message reached the bot you intended to test.

Send a reply or notification
Configure Send Message
- Add a Telegram node after the trigger.
- Select the same Telegram credential.
- Choose the Message resource.
- Choose Send Message.
- Enter the destination’s Chat ID.
- Write the message text, then execute the node with the trigger data available.
For a direct reply, map the chat ID from the trigger execution into the Chat ID field. This keeps the response attached to the conversation that initiated the workflow and allows the same workflow to serve multiple users.

Use @channelusername only for a public channel. A private channel or group needs its numeric identifier. For a private group, the leading - is significant; omitting it can direct the request to the wrong place or cause Telegram to reject it.
Post to a Telegram channel
Most channel message operations require the bot to be added to the channel. Add it before testing the n8n node, then grant the administrator access needed for the operation you selected. A bot that exists and authenticates correctly can still receive a permissions error if it is not a channel administrator.
- Open the target channel in Telegram.
- Add the bot as a member.
- Promote it to an administrator with the permissions needed to post or perform the selected action.
- In n8n, use
@channelusernamefor a public channel, or the channel’s numeric identifier when the channel is private. - Send a short test message and verify that it appears in the intended channel.
If the operation fails after these steps, check that the destination is the channel and not a similarly named group, and capture a fresh identifier from a trigger execution rather than reusing an ID copied from another bot.

Test, then activate the workflow
A disciplined test separates authentication, update delivery, destination addressing, and message permissions.
- Keep the workflow in manual execution.
- Send
/startor a short text message to the bot. - Confirm that Telegram Trigger receives an update.
- Map the captured chat ID into Send Message.
- Execute the downstream node and verify the reply.
- Test each additional destination type you plan to support: direct chat, group, and channel.
- Test media or callback events if the production workflow will handle them.
- Activate the workflow only after the manual path succeeds.
Run a separate test after changing the token, webhook URL, administrator permissions, or destination ID. A previous successful execution does not prove that a newly rotated secret or newly configured channel is valid.
Self-hosted n8n: webhook and HTTPS requirements
Expose a public HTTPS endpoint
Telegram’s Bot API requires HTTPS requests. For a self-hosted n8n instance, the URL used for Telegram Trigger webhook delivery must be stable, publicly reachable, and protected by a valid HTTPS configuration. A local address, private network hostname, or an endpoint reachable only from your browser cannot receive Telegram’s internet-originated webhook requests.
Telegram’s setWebhook method sends JSON updates to the HTTPS URL. It also supports an optional secret_token header, which can help an application verify that webhook requests carry the expected secret. Configure the endpoint and any reverse proxy so requests reach the n8n webhook path without being blocked, redirected incorrectly, or terminated before n8n receives them.
Do not mix polling and webhooks
Telegram offers two mutually exclusive update-delivery methods: getUpdates long polling and outgoing webhooks. Long polling does not work while an outgoing webhook is configured. In practical terms, one bot cannot have an active webhook and a competing polling consumer collecting the same updates.

If another workflow, script, test utility, or service has configured the bot’s webhook or is polling it, the n8n trigger may show missing or inconsistent events. Remove the competing consumer, keep one delivery mode, and then retest with a new message. For self-hosted n8n, inspect the webhook status and confirm that the public HTTPS URL resolves from outside your network.

Keep text within 4,096 characters
n8n’s message-operation documentation lists a 4,096-character limit for Send Message text after entity parsing. Formatting entities can change the resulting length, so measure the final text rather than relying only on the length of an unformatted template.
When a generated response can exceed the limit, split it into ordered chunks before sending. Preserve headings or numbering so the reader can reconstruct the original response, and avoid splitting in the middle of a URL, code sample, or markup sequence. A workflow that sends several chunks should also apply throttling.

Throttle bulk sends
Telegram limits sending to 30 messages per second. This is a sending limit, not a guarantee that a workflow can safely burst at that rate under every network condition. For broadcasts or loops, add pacing, keep batches small, and handle API errors so one rejected request does not silently stop the rest of the run.
Store enough execution information to identify the recipient, chunk number, and error response. That makes it possible to retry only failed messages instead of sending duplicates to everyone.
Common failures and the precise fix
No trigger event arrives
- Confirm the workflow is currently executing manually or is activated.
- Check that the selected credential contains the current token.
- Verify that the message was sent to the correct bot, not another bot with a similar username.
- On self-hosted n8n, verify that the public URL is HTTPS and reachable from the internet.
- Check that no other webhook or polling consumer is collecting the bot’s updates.
The token is invalid or exposed
Regenerate or revoke the token with BotFather, update the n8n Telegram credential, and retest the trigger and every action workflow that uses it. Do not continue using a token that appeared in a public log, screenshot, repository, or message.
The message goes to the wrong destination
- Capture a fresh chat ID from Telegram Trigger output.
- Use
@channelusernameonly for a public channel. - Use a signed numeric ID, including the leading minus sign, for a private group.
- Check that an expression is not returning an old execution’s ID.
Channel sending fails
Add the bot to the channel and promote it to an administrator with the permissions required by the operation. Confirm that the node is targeting the intended channel and that a private destination is using its numeric identifier.

Look for another active workflow, script, or service using the same bot. Telegram permits only one update-delivery mode at a time: either long polling through getUpdates or an outgoing webhook. Remove the competing configuration, then send a new test message after the remaining consumer is ready.
Choose an implementation pattern
Simple conversational reply
Use Telegram Trigger for a new-message event, add a decision or transformation node, and finish with Send Message using the incoming chat ID. This is the smallest useful pattern and is the best first test because it validates the token, update delivery, ID mapping, and outbound permission in one path.
Notification workflow
Use a non-Telegram event in n8n to start the workflow, then send a Telegram notification to a stored direct-chat ID, public channel username, or private group ID. Keep the destination in a controlled configuration value rather than hard-coding it in many nodes, and test that the account or bot has access before enabling production alerts.
Media, callbacks, and approvals
If the workflow handles media messages, callback queries, or a human approval step, select the corresponding Telegram update event and test the complete event shape before building downstream mappings. A workflow that only tested text messages may not have the fields needed for a callback or media event. For an approval process, Telegram’s Send and Wait for Response pattern can be combined with the trigger and a follow-up action, but it still depends on correct chat identification and reliable update delivery.

- Bot username meets Telegram’s length, character, and
bot-suffix rules. - API token is stored only in the n8n credential and protected like a password.
- Telegram Trigger and action nodes select the same current credential.
- Manual trigger execution receives a fresh test update.
- Chat ID format matches the destination.
- Channel bot membership and administrator permissions are confirmed.
- Self-hosted n8n has a public HTTPS endpoint.
- No other service is polling or setting a webhook for the same bot.
- Long messages are split below the 4,096-character post-parsing limit.
- Bulk sends are throttled below Telegram’s 30-messages-per-second sending limit and errors are handled.
Once these checks pass, activate the workflow and monitor its first production executions. Keep the trigger output and Telegram API errors available in n8n’s execution history so destination, permission, webhook, and rate-limit problems can be distinguished quickly.
