Docker Compose Down Timeout: Why Containers Stop Slowly and How to Fix It

A ten-second Compose teardown is usually the default SIGTERM grace period. Diagnose the slow service, repair signal handling, and configure a measured shutdown period instead of hiding the problem with a larger timeout.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

docker compose down normally gives each container 10 seconds to exit after Docker sends SIGTERM. If the process is still running, Docker sends SIGKILL. A ten-second pause is therefore the expected grace period, not automatically a failure. When shutdown repeatedly reaches that limit, the usual cause is that the application never receives or handles the termination signal, although databases and other stateful services may legitimately need more time to flush data and close connections.

What docker compose down actually does

The command tears down a Compose project. It stops the project’s containers, then removes those containers and the project network. Additional cleanup is opt-in: flags can also remove named volumes or images. The stop phase happens before removal, so a delay is normally evidence that one or more containers have not exited yet.

Compose does not wait indefinitely. For a normal stop, Docker sends SIGTERM to the container’s main process, waits for the configured grace period, and sends SIGKILL if the process remains. Docker documents the default as 10 seconds. The same sequence is used by docker compose stop, and down invokes that stop behavior as part of teardown.

Why the delay is usually exactly 10 seconds

A pause of approximately ten seconds strongly suggests that the container reached the default timeout. The application did not exit during the grace period, so Docker escalated to a forceful kill. The timer is not a network timeout and does not measure how long Compose needs to remove files; it is the maximum wait for a clean process exit under the current settings.

Docker’s documented sequence is: send SIGTERM, wait 10 seconds by default, then send SIGKILL. A cleanly written service exits before the deadline and makes down finish quickly. A service that ignores the signal, has no shutdown handler, or is waiting on work that cannot complete will consume the entire interval.

First find the service that is holding teardown

Do not increase every timeout before identifying the container. A Compose project can contain several services, and only one may be delaying the operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Run docker compose ps while the project is up. Note each service name, container name, and current state.
  2. Stop the project with docker compose down and watch which container is reported as stopping or taking the longest.
  3. Inspect the service’s recent output with docker compose logs --tail=200 SERVICE. Look for shutdown messages, unfinished requests, database checkpoints, queue-draining messages, or errors.
  4. Inspect the container configuration with docker inspect CONTAINER. Check the entrypoint, command, configured stop signal, and stop timeout.
  5. Repeat the test after making one change at a time so you can distinguish a signal problem from legitimately long cleanup.

If the delay is always close to ten seconds and logs show no graceful-shutdown message, treat signal delivery or process ownership as the primary suspect. If logs show the application beginning an orderly shutdown and completing just after ten seconds, measure the required duration and configure a longer service grace period instead.

Signal delivery: why PID 1 matters

Inside a container, the main process is PID 1. Docker sends the stop signal to that process. The application must either be PID 1 itself or be reliably forwarded the signal by the process that is PID 1.

The shell-form entrypoint problem

A shell-form Dockerfile command such as CMD node server.js can start a shell as PID 1, with Node running as its child. Depending on the shell and command, SIGTERM may stop the shell without being forwarded to the actual application. Docker then waits while the child continues running, eventually forcing the container down.

Prefer exec form so the application becomes PID 1:

CMD ["node", "server.js"]

The same principle applies to Python, Java, Go, Ruby, and other runtimes. An entrypoint wrapper can be used when it performs necessary setup, but it should finish by replacing itself with the application, commonly with exec:

#!/bin/sh
set -e
# setup work goes here
exec ./my-service

Without exec, the wrapper remains PID 1 and must implement correct signal forwarding itself. A wrapper that launches a background process and then waits incorrectly can produce the same ten-second symptom.

Check the Compose command as well as the image

A Compose file can override the image’s entrypoint or command. An image may have a correct exec-form default, while a project-level override reintroduces a shell. Review both entrypoint: and command: in the service definition and compare them with the image metadata shown by docker inspect.

When a shell is genuinely required, use an explicit form and make signal behavior deliberate. For example, a shell command that ends with exec replaces the shell with the application rather than leaving the shell in front of it.

Make the application handle SIGTERM

Receiving a signal is only half of a graceful stop. The application must register a handler that stops accepting new work, finishes or cancels active work according to its policy, flushes important state, closes connections, and exits with a normal status.

What a useful shutdown handler does

  • Stop accepting new HTTP requests, jobs, or messages.
  • Allow in-flight work a bounded amount of time to finish.
  • Flush buffered logs and application data.
  • Close database, cache, and message-broker connections.
  • Exit the process instead of merely recording that a signal arrived.

Use the runtime’s documented signal API and make the handler idempotent. A second signal or a race during shutdown should not leave the process waiting forever. Log the start and completion of cleanup so the required duration can be observed.

When the application expects another signal

Compose uses SIGTERM unless a service sets stop_signal. Some software is designed to perform its clean shutdown on another signal. Configure that signal explicitly rather than assuming Docker’s default is suitable:

Give slow but healthy services a longer grace period

Ten seconds is the default, not a universal target. A database may need to complete a checkpoint, a queue consumer may need to acknowledge work, and a web server may need to drain long-running requests. Compose provides stop_grace_period for a persistent, service-specific policy. It accepts a duration such as 30s or 1m30s; the specification defines a 10-second default when the field is omitted.

services:
database:
image: example/database:latest
stop_grace_period: 1m30s

api:
image: example/api:latest
stop_grace_period: 30s

Set the value from observed cleanup time, not from guesswork. If logs show that a service consistently completes in 18 seconds, a 30-second budget provides margin. A very large value can make deployments and emergency recovery unnecessarily slow, so keep it tied to a documented shutdown requirement.

Grace period is not a substitute for signal handling

If the process ignores SIGTERM, increasing stop_grace_period only delays the eventual SIGKILL. It does not make the signal reach a child process, add a missing handler, or repair a deadlocked shutdown routine. Fix the process tree first, then give legitimate cleanup enough time.

Use a longer timeout for one teardown only

For a one-off operation, pass a timeout directly to down:

docker compose down --timeout 30

The -t and --timeout options set the command’s shutdown wait in seconds. This is useful during a maintenance window or while validating how long a known-clean shutdown takes. It is a command-level choice; it does not change the service definition for future invocations.

Choose the number from observed behavior. If a service needs 25 seconds to finish a documented flush, 30 seconds is reasonable. If it never logs that cleanup began, a 300-second timeout merely postpones the force kill and can hide a broken entrypoint.

A practical fix sequence

  1. Identify the slow service. Use docker compose ps, targeted logs, and docker inspect rather than changing the entire project blindly.
  2. Verify the process tree. Confirm that the intended application is PID 1 or that an entrypoint forwards signals correctly. Replace shell-form commands with exec form where appropriate.
  3. Add or repair SIGTERM handling. The handler should stop intake, finish bounded work, close resources, and exit.
  4. Set stop_signal only when required. Use the signal specified by the application’s own shutdown contract.
  5. Measure valid cleanup time. Use timestamps in logs to separate real work from a process that is simply ignoring the signal.
  6. Set stop_grace_period for that service. Use a duration such as 30s or 1m30s when the measured cleanup exceeds the default.
  7. Use docker compose down --timeout SECONDS for an isolated run. Keep this separate from the persistent Compose policy.
  8. Recreate changed services. After changing the image, Dockerfile, entrypoint, or Compose file, run docker compose up -d --force-recreate SERVICE or recreate the project as appropriate so the running container uses the new configuration.
  9. Test teardown again. Confirm that logs show the graceful path and that the container exits before the configured deadline.

How to tell a healthy slow shutdown from a broken one

Observation Likely meaning Best next action
The stop takes about 10 seconds every time, with no shutdown log The process may not receive or handle SIGTERM Inspect PID 1, entrypoint form, command overrides, and signal handlers
Logs show “shutting down” and completion shortly after 10 seconds Cleanup is real but exceeds the default grace period Measure the duration and set a service-specific stop_grace_period
The service exits quickly when signaled directly but not during Compose teardown The Compose command or entrypoint may be targeting a shell or wrapper Compare image metadata with Compose command and entrypoint
The process remains active even with a much longer timeout The application may be hung, deadlocked, or waiting on an unavailable dependency Inspect logs and dependencies; do not keep increasing the timeout without a shutdown fix
Data is interrupted when the timeout expires SIGKILL terminated work that had not completed Repair graceful shutdown and choose a timeout that covers verified cleanup

Data-safety implications of SIGKILL

SIGKILL cannot be caught or handled. When Docker sends it, the process stops immediately from the application’s perspective. Pending writes, uncommitted transactions, in-memory queue state, or partially completed requests may be interrupted. Filesystems and databases often have recovery mechanisms, but a forced stop is still less controlled than an orderly shutdown.

This is why “make the timeout huge” is not the complete answer. A longer grace period is valuable when the service is demonstrably progressing through cleanup. It is not a safety mechanism for an application that is stuck. For critical state, combine correct signal handling with the application’s documented recovery and persistence strategy.

Compose examples for common patterns

Exec-form application command

services:
api:
build: .
command: ["node", "server.js"]
stop_grace_period: 30s

The array form avoids inserting a shell in front of the Node process. The 30-second period is a policy choice for an application whose measured cleanup can exceed ten seconds; it should be adjusted to the service’s actual behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Entrypoint wrapper that forwards signals

services:
worker:
image: example/worker:latest
entrypoint: ["/usr/local/bin/entrypoint.sh"]
stop_grace_period: 1m30s

The wrapper must end with exec followed by the worker process. Merely placing the wrapper in array form does not guarantee forwarding if the script continues to run as PID 1 and leaves the worker as an unmanaged child.

Service with an application-specific signal

services:
legacy-service:
image: example/legacy:latest
stop_signal: SIGINT
stop_grace_period: 45s

Use this pattern only when the service’s documentation defines SIGINT as its clean shutdown signal. Test that the process exits and that its cleanup messages appear before the deadline.

Common mistakes and their remedies

Changing only the global command timeout

Running docker compose down --timeout 60 may make the symptom less visible, but it leaves the underlying signal path unchanged. Make the command-level override temporary and fix the image or service policy for a lasting solution.

Assuming every ten-second delay is a Docker bug

The ten-second figure is the documented default grace period. Reaching it means Docker waited for the configured interval; it does not, by itself, show that Docker failed to send the signal. Check the application and process tree before blaming the engine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Setting a long grace period for every service

Different services have different shutdown needs. Applying a large value project-wide slows routine development and emergency teardown. Keep the longer period on the database, queue, or other service that demonstrably needs it.

Forgetting to recreate containers

Editing a Dockerfile or Compose file does not retroactively change a running container. Recreate the affected service, then verify its command and stop settings with inspection before retesting.

Removing volumes while diagnosing shutdown

The normal down operation removes containers and networks. Volume and image removal require additional flags. Avoid destructive cleanup options while investigating a stop problem unless you have confirmed that the data is disposable or backed up.

Verification checklist

  • docker compose ps identifies the service that consumes the wait.
  • Logs show whether graceful shutdown starts and finishes.
  • The intended application is PID 1, or the entrypoint forwards signals with a correct process replacement.
  • The application exits on SIGTERM, or stop_signal matches its documented alternative.
  • stop_grace_period is set only where measured cleanup exceeds 10 seconds.
  • A one-time --timeout value is based on observed cleanup rather than used to conceal a hang.
  • Changed images and Compose settings have been applied by recreating the service.
  • Teardown completes without an avoidable SIGKILL, and stateful services report a clean close.

Bottom line

A ten-second docker compose down delay is Docker’s documented default wait after SIGTERM. Fix the signal path first: make the real application PID 1, use exec-form commands, and implement a bounded graceful-shutdown handler. If the service is genuinely doing necessary cleanup, set its stop_grace_period to a measured duration. Use docker compose down --timeout for a single operation, not as a permanent substitute for correct process behavior.
