To make a Lifesteal Minecraft server, install a Java Edition server, run it on Paper for plugin support, add a Lifesteal plugin that matches your Minecraft version, configure its heart and elimination rules, and test everything before giving friends the address. Lifesteal is not a separate official server download: it is a gameplay plugin running on a normal Java server.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Minecraft Java servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
The exact experience depends on the plugin. One current LifeSteal listing (version 1.0.2, updated July 3, 2026) includes heart items and recipes, revive beacons, eliminations, commands and core rule settings. A different Spigot listing uses another ruleset, including lives gained from kills, health loss when a player dies, craftable hearts and spectator mode after elimination. Treat the plugin’s version, configuration and documentation as part of the server’s design—not as interchangeable defaults.

What a Lifesteal server actually is
A Lifesteal server combines three layers:
- Minecraft: Java Edition: the official server JAR provides the game world, networking and vanilla rules.
- Paper: a Java server implementation designed to improve performance and provide more advanced features and an API for plugins. Paper’s documentation treats initial setup and plugin installation as its basic getting-started workflow.
- A Lifesteal plugin: this adds the heart or life economy, kill rewards, death penalties, elimination, revival items, recipes and administration commands.
Because the plugin changes player health and death behavior, two servers both called “Lifesteal” can play very differently. Before downloading anything, decide whether you want hearts, a finite number of lives, or a hybrid system, then choose a plugin whose documented rules and supported Minecraft build match that plan.
Plan the server before installing it
Choose the Minecraft and Paper version first
Write down the exact Minecraft version you intend to run. Then select a Paper build for that same version and a Lifesteal plugin that explicitly supports it. A plugin listing aimed at one Minecraft release may not load on another, even when both are labeled Paper-compatible. Do not assume that the newest plugin file is correct for your server; compare the supported version, release date and update history.

Decide who will host it
You have two practical choices:
- Home hosting: you run the server on your own computer. It costs no separate hosting fee, but the machine must stay on, your network must accept an incoming connection, and your public IP address becomes part of the connection process.
- Managed hosting: a provider runs the Paper server for you. This is useful when you need 24/7 availability, public access without configuring a home router, scheduled backups or the ability to scale resources. Before subscribing, verify the provider’s Minecraft version support, plugin policy, backup method, server location, pricing, uptime terms and access to files and console.
Set a rules agreement for your players
Decide these items before anyone starts collecting hearts:
- Starting and maximum hearts or lives.
- How many hearts or lives a player gains for a kill.
- What a player loses when killed by another player.
- Whether natural deaths, fall damage, mobs and the void affect the economy.
- The elimination threshold and whether an eliminated player is banned, spectates or can remain online.
- How revival works, who can use a revival item and whether it is craftable.
- Who may run administrative, reset and moderation commands.
These are plugin-specific settings. Record your intended values so you can check the configuration after the first startup instead of discovering the rules through accidental player losses.

Install the Java server files
- Install a compatible Java runtime. Use the Java version required by the Minecraft release you selected. Confirm that the runtime is visible in a terminal or command prompt:
java -version
The command should print a version rather than an “unknown command” error. If it fails, install Java and reopen the terminal before continuing.
- Create a dedicated server folder. Keep the server in its own directory rather than mixing it with downloads or personal files. This folder will contain the JAR, world directories, configuration files, logs and plugin data.
- Download the official Minecraft: Java Edition server JAR for the version you selected, and place it in the folder. The official Java server setup process is the reference for the Java prerequisite, server JAR, launch command,
server.properties, port forwarding and public-IP connection model. - Run the JAR once. A first launch creates the server files and normally stops until you accept Mojang’s EULA. If your operating system hides file extensions, enable them so you can distinguish the JAR from text files.
- Complete the EULA acceptance. Open the generated
eula.txt, read the license, change the acceptance setting toeula=trueonly if you agree, save the file and launch the server again. - Review
server.properties. Set the server name, difficulty, game mode, player limit, whitelist policy and other vanilla options before inviting anyone. Keep the server port visible; you will need the same value when configuring a router or firewall.
Launching the server from a terminal
Rename the downloaded server file to a simple name such as paper.jar after installing Paper, or use its exact filename in the command. A typical launch command is:
java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar nogui
The -Xms and -Xmx values are examples, not universal requirements. Adjust them to the RAM available to the server and to the number of players and plugins you plan to run. Mojang’s setup guidance specifically notes that the memory settings may need adjustment for the RAM dedicated to the server. Leave enough memory for the operating system; assigning all installed RAM can make the machine less stable.

Use Paper for plugin support
Paper is the practical choice when you want a Lifesteal plugin, performance-oriented server behavior and administration features. Download the Paper build for the exact Minecraft version you selected, place it in the dedicated folder and perform the first launch with that JAR. Paper generates its own configuration and, after startup, a plugins directory if one does not already exist.
Do not combine files from unrelated Minecraft versions. If the console reports an unsupported server version, an incompatible class, or a plugin that failed to load, stop and verify the Minecraft version, Paper build and plugin release before changing settings.
Install and initialize the Lifesteal plugin
- Choose the plugin. Read its supported Minecraft and Paper versions, rule descriptions, command list, permissions, configuration options, storage behavior and update history. Prefer a project that is maintained for the version you are actually running.
- Download the plugin JAR from its project listing and place that JAR directly in the server’s
pluginsfolder. Do not unpack it or put it inside another subfolder unless the project specifically says to do so. - Start or restart Paper. Watch the console for the plugin’s enable message and any dependency or version errors. A successful load normally creates a plugin data folder containing configuration files.
- Run the setup command when required. The cited LifeSteal 1.0.2 listing instructs administrators to run:
/lssetup
Run it from the in-game console or as an administrator in-game, according to that plugin’s instructions. Do not assume another Lifesteal plugin uses the same command.
- Stop the server and inspect the generated files. Read the configuration comments, then set the values you decided during planning. Restart after saving changes; some plugins read settings only during startup.
Configure the heart and life economy
Starting and maximum health
Find the plugin’s starting-heart and maximum-heart settings if they are provided. A maximum prevents a player from accumulating unlimited health through repeated kills. If the plugin uses lives rather than half-hearts, configure the starting lives and the cap in the equivalent section. Test with a temporary account before opening the server.

Kill rewards and player deaths
Set the reward for a player-versus-player kill and the penalty applied to the victim. Confirm whether a kill by a player is distinguished from a death caused by a mob, fall, fire, the void or another environmental event. Some plugins let you exempt natural deaths; others apply a penalty to every death. The second cited Spigot listing, for example, describes health loss on player death and lives gained from kills, which is not the same economy as every heart-based plugin.
Elimination and spectator behavior
Define the threshold at which a player is eliminated. Then check what the plugin does: ban the player, prevent respawning, move the player to spectator mode, or use another state. The alternate Spigot ruleset places eliminated players in spectator mode by default. If your community expects a ban or a temporary lockout, change the setting only if the plugin supports it and document the result for players.
Revival items, beacons and recipes
The LifeSteal 1.0.2 listing includes heart items and recipes and revive beacons. Check each recipe’s ingredients, whether the item can be dropped or traded, and whether a revival requires an administrator or a surviving player. A powerful revival item can undermine the risk of elimination, while an inaccessible recipe can make elimination permanent in practice. Keep the recipe and permission rules visible to players.
Commands and permissions
Grant only the permissions needed by each role. Ordinary players generally need gameplay commands, while moderators may need inspection or moderation commands and owners may need setup, reset and data-management commands. Use the plugin’s documented command and permission names; do not invent aliases based on another project. Protect reset and administrative commands because a mistaken reset can change every player’s progression.

- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
- Join, leave and rejoin to confirm player data persists.
- Kill a test player and verify the attacker’s reward and victim’s penalty.
- Repeat a death caused by a mob, fall, fire or the void to confirm natural-death behavior.
- Reach the maximum-heart or minimum-life boundary and check the documented elimination action.
- Craft, use and, where applicable, destroy a heart item or revive beacon.
- Disconnect during combat or immediately after a death and confirm that the result is not duplicated or lost.
- Run every administrative command from the correct role and confirm that unauthorized players receive a denial.
- Stop the server normally, start it again and verify worlds, inventories, hearts and plugin data.
Take a backup of the world and plugin data after the test passes. Keep a clean pre-season backup so you can reset the season without manually repairing individual players.

Find the local server address and port
On the hosting computer, the server listens on the port shown in server.properties. Mojang’s Java server guide identifies 25565 as the default port used in the standard setup; do not assume it if you changed the property or if another service already uses it.
Forward the port on the router
- Give the hosting computer a stable local address, either with a reserved DHCP lease or a static local configuration.
- Create a router port-forwarding rule for the server’s TCP connection (and any protocol your router interface explicitly requires) to that local address and port.
- Allow the Java server through the computer’s firewall.
- Start Paper and test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, rather than from the same home Wi-Fi.
Router menus differ by manufacturer, so the exact clicks cannot be prescribed universally. If outside testing fails, check the local address, forwarding target, firewall rule, server port and whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT. A port-forward rule cannot accept unsolicited connections when the provider does not give your router a reachable public address.
Share the address safely
Give trusted friends the public address and port only after testing. Mojang warns that exposing a home public IP creates security risk. Use a whitelist, strong operator credentials, current Paper and plugin releases, and a firewall that exposes only the required service. Never post the address alongside personal information, and do not give every player operator access.
Common failures and precise fixes
The server closes immediately
Read the first error in the console, not just the final shutdown line. A missing or incompatible Java runtime, an unaccepted EULA, a wrong JAR filename in the launch command or insufficient permissions on the folder are common causes. Correct one cause at a time, then launch again.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
The plugin does not appear in the plugin list
Confirm that the JAR is directly inside plugins, that it was not left as a ZIP download, and that Paper is running the Minecraft version listed by the plugin. Remove duplicate copies, restart the server and inspect the console for a dependency or API-version error.
/lssetup is unknown
The command belongs to the cited LifeSteal 1.0.2 setup flow. If you installed a different plugin, use its own documented initialization command. If you installed that exact project and the command is still unavailable, check whether the plugin enabled successfully and whether you are running the command from the console or an account with the required permission.
Hearts or lives reset after a restart
Stop the server cleanly, verify that the plugin data directory is writable, and check whether you are editing the active configuration rather than a sample file. Restore the last known-good backup before experimenting with a reset command.
Friends cannot connect
First connect locally using the hosting computer’s local address. If that works, troubleshoot the firewall, router forwarding and public address separately. If local connection fails, fix the server bind address, port, firewall or Paper startup before changing router settings.
How the available Lifesteal rules differ
The two cited listings demonstrate why the name “Lifesteal” does not define one universal ruleset.

Use compatibility, economy, elimination and revival behavior as your selection criteria—not download counters. Marketplace counters are volatile and are not evidence of performance or reliability.
Keep the server healthy after launch
- Back up the world, player data and plugin configuration on a schedule, and keep at least one copy off the server machine.
- Update Paper and the Lifesteal plugin only after checking that the versions remain compatible. Back up before every update.
- Read the console after each restart for warnings, disabled plugins and failed data migrations.
- Review operator accounts and whitelist entries regularly.
- Record rule changes so players know whether a death penalty, recipe or elimination behavior changed mid-season.
- Watch memory use and server tick performance. If the server becomes unstable, lower the view or simulation distance, remove unnecessary plugins and adjust the Java memory allocation rather than simply assigning all available RAM.
The Bottom Line
A reliable Lifesteal server is a version-matched Paper server with one well-understood plugin, explicitly configured death and revival rules, private testing, backups and controlled network access. Build the vanilla Java server first, add the plugin second, and open the port only after the heart economy and recovery path behave exactly as your community expects.
