What you need before connecting the Wii U
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD is a Wii U game, so the native release requires a Wii U console and a compatible Wii U controller. Nintendo’s documentation identifies the Wii U GamePad and Wii U Pro Controller as the supported choices. Wii Remotes, Classic Controllers, Switch controllers and generic USB gamepads should not be assumed to work with the native Wii U release without separate adapter or software support.
- A Wii U console with its GamePad for initial setup and system control.
- An HDMI cable and an open HDMI input on the television.
- A copy of The Wind Waker HD.
- Either the GamePad or a Wii U Pro Controller. A Pro Controller must be paired with the console before it can control the game.
- For documented 5.1-channel surround sound, a receiver with a built-in HDMI port and a High Speed HDMI Cable.
Place the console where air can circulate around it. Turn the television off before connecting the cable, particularly if you are replacing another device in the same HDMI socket. Keep the Wii U close enough for its power and video cables to reach without tension, and leave the console’s vents unobstructed.

Connect the Wii U to a modern television with HDMI
- Insert one end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the back of the Wii U.
- Insert the other end into an open HDMI input on the television. Note the input number, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
- Turn on the television and select that same HDMI input with the TV remote.
- Turn on the Wii U. If the console does not produce a picture, check the input selection and reseat both ends of the cable before changing any other setting.
- On the Wii U, open the TV connection settings and set TV Connection Type to HDMI. This is Nintendo’s documented setting for an HDMI connection.
HDMI is the simplest connection for a current television because it carries the Wii U’s digital video and audio through one cable. Nintendo also documented Wii AV and component-cable connections for televisions without HDMI, but those legacy paths use different cables and do not provide the same straightforward modern-TV workflow.
If you are connecting through a receiver, soundbar or switch, first test the Wii U directly on the television. A direct connection removes another device from the troubleshooting chain. Once the picture works, reconnect the receiver or switch and select the corresponding HDMI input on each device.
Choose the right controller
At startup, the game displays the instruction: “To begin, choose between the Wii U GamePad and the Wii U Pro Controller.” Your choice determines where secondary-screen functions appear and whether you can play without the television.

When the GamePad is the better choice
Select the GamePad when you want to see the map, manage items without covering the television image, or move the game to the handheld screen. Nintendo’s product information says that pressing the minus button during play enables Off-TV Play on the GamePad. The console still needs to be powered on, but the television can be turned off after Off-TV Play is enabled.
The GamePad is also the safer first choice when setting up a Wii U whose system menus have not yet been configured. It is the controller Nintendo supplies for navigating the console itself, while a Pro Controller is an additional device that must be registered.
When the Pro Controller is the better choice
Select the Wii U Pro Controller for a conventional controller feel and a session centered on the television. It is officially supported by the game, but it will not work until it has been paired in Wii U Controller Settings. If you begin with the GamePad, you can change the active controller later from the game’s Options menu.
The Pro Controller does not add a second display or Off-TV Play. Its advantage is simplicity once paired: the television remains the primary screen, and the controller has the familiar two-stick, face-button layout expected for a TV session.

Pair a Wii U Pro Controller
- Turn on the Wii U and display the Wii U HOME Menu.
- Choose Controller Settings.
- Select Pair.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. The console will search for the Pro Controller and register it.
- Launch The Wind Waker HD and choose the Wii U Pro Controller when the game asks which controller to use.
If the game is already running, open the Options menu from the Items screen and select the controller there. Re-pairing from the HOME Menu is the appropriate first step when the controller is absent from that list or does not respond.
Pairing is a system-level step, while choosing the controller is a game-level step. Completing only one of them can make the controller appear to be broken: the Wii U may recognize the Pro Controller, but Wind Waker HD may still be set to the GamePad until you change the selection in the startup prompt or Items screen.
Set the display for a current television
Nintendo lists 1080p output for the Wii U version of The Wind Waker HD. The console can therefore send a 1080p signal to a modern television over HDMI. The television may still show its own information banner, scale the image, or apply picture processing; those behaviors belong to the TV rather than the game.
Recommended video sequence
- Use the TV’s source menu to select the HDMI input connected to the Wii U.
- Confirm that Wii U TV Connection Type is set to HDMI.
- Allow the television to detect the Wii U signal. If the TV asks whether to keep the resolution, accept the detected Wii U setting.
- Use the television’s game or low-latency picture mode only if you prefer its processing behavior; the Wii U connection itself does not require a special gaming mode.
If you see a black screen after changing televisions, do not assume the game is damaged. Start with the physical input and cable checks in the troubleshooting section, then verify the Wii U connection type.
“1080p output” describes what the Wii U can send; it does not prevent a television from applying its own scaling or sharpening. If the picture looks soft, oversized or unusually sharp, inspect the TV’s aspect-ratio and picture-processing controls after confirming that the console is still using HDMI.
Configure 5.1-channel surround sound
The Wind Waker HD supports 5.1-channel linear PCM surround sound. Nintendo’s manual specifies that surround playback requires the Wii U’s audio output to be set to Surround and the console to be connected to a receiver with a built-in HDMI port using a High Speed HDMI Cable.
- Connect the Wii U to the HDMI input on the surround receiver, rather than routing the console directly to the television’s audio return path.
- Connect the receiver’s HDMI output to the television.
- On the Wii U, open the audio-output settings and select Surround.
- Set the receiver to the HDMI input used by the Wii U and select a listening mode that accepts multichannel linear PCM.
- Start the game and verify that the receiver reports a multichannel PCM signal, if its front panel or on-screen display provides that information.
A television’s built-in speakers normally provide stereo playback even when a game supports surround. If you do not have an HDMI-equipped receiver, leave the Wii U on the audio setting appropriate for your actual connection rather than expecting the TV alone to create the documented 5.1 signal.
The High Speed HDMI Cable requirement matters specifically to Nintendo’s documented surround configuration. For ordinary stereo television audio, the important setup points remain a working HDMI connection and the correct TV input; for 5.1, the receiver must be in the HDMI path and configured for multichannel linear PCM.

Use the GamePad’s second-screen features
The GamePad is more than an alternative controller. It carries secondary-screen functions that can keep the map and item controls away from the television image. This is why menus appearing on the GamePad are normally expected behavior, not a connection fault.
Enable Off-TV Play
- Start the game with the Wii U GamePad selected.
- During play, press the GamePad’s minus button.
- Choose the Off-TV Play option when it appears.
- Continue playing on the GamePad. Turn the television off only after the handheld image is active.
Off-TV Play uses the GamePad’s display while the Wii U continues to run the game. The Pro Controller cannot provide this feature because it has no screen.
Move back to a TV-first controller
If you prefer to keep all gameplay on the television, open the Items screen, enter Options, and select the Wii U Pro Controller. The controller must already be paired through the HOME Menu. You can also return to the GamePad from the same in-game controller selection when you want the second screen again.
Troubleshoot the most common setup problems
No picture or “no signal” on the television
- Confirm that the television is set to the exact HDMI input used by the Wii U cable.
- Reseat the HDMI plug at both the console and TV. A partially inserted plug can leave the console powered while producing no image.
- Try another open HDMI input on the television and select that input.
- Open Wii U TV settings and confirm TV Connection Type: HDMI.
- Temporarily remove HDMI switches, capture devices or receivers from the path so the Wii U is connected directly to the TV. Add those devices back one at a time after a direct picture works.
If the Wii U picture appears on another television but not the modern set, the issue is likely input negotiation or the TV’s selected source rather than the game disc or controller.

The Pro Controller does not respond
- Open the Wii U HOME Menu and choose Controller Settings.
- Select Pair and complete the on-screen pairing procedure again.
- Relaunch the game, or open the Items screen’s Options menu and select the Pro Controller.
Pairing and in-game selection are separate steps: a controller can be registered with the console but still not be the controller currently selected by the game.
Menus appear on the GamePad
This is expected when the GamePad is selected. The game uses its second screen for map and item functions. Continue with the GamePad, enable Off-TV Play with the minus button, or switch to the paired Pro Controller through the Items screen’s Options menu for a TV-focused session.
There is no surround sound
- Confirm that the Wii U audio-output type is set to Surround.
- Check that the Wii U is connected to a receiver with a built-in HDMI port.
- Use a High Speed HDMI Cable for the documented surround configuration.
- Verify that the receiver is on the Wii U’s HDMI input and is configured to accept multichannel linear PCM.
The supported format is 5.1-channel linear PCM. A receiver or television that only reports stereo will not show a 5.1 signal, even though the game supports it.

The television shows an unusual aspect ratio or softened image
First confirm the console is using HDMI and that the TV is on the correct input. Then check the television’s aspect-ratio and picture-processing controls. Modern sets may enlarge, sharpen or otherwise process a 1080p console image; those options can change how the game looks without changing the Wii U’s output capability.

Use legacy cables only when HDMI is unavailable
Nintendo’s connection instructions also cover Wii AV and component-cable paths. These are relevant when a television has no usable HDMI input, but they require the corresponding Wii U cables and the correct analog inputs on the set. They do not provide the single-cable digital video and audio path used by HDMI, and component or composite inputs may be absent from newer televisions. If your TV has HDMI, use it and set the Wii U’s TV Connection Type accordingly.
If you do not own a Wii U
A complete used Wii U bundle that includes the GamePad is the practical acquisition route because the GamePad is the system’s primary setup controller and is required for many console-management tasks. Nintendo’s setup material does not establish a current price, stock level or retailer program. Check those details at the time of purchase, and confirm that the bundle includes a working console, GamePad, GamePad charging equipment and the required video cable.
Do not buy a console-only listing assuming a modern USB controller will substitute for the GamePad. The documented Wind Waker HD choices are the Wii U GamePad and Wii U Pro Controller, and a replacement GamePad’s availability can differ from that of the console itself. Verify what is included before paying, especially when the listing uses stock photographs.

Can I use a Wii U Pro Controller instead of the GamePad?
Yes. Pair it from HOME Menu → Controller Settings → Pair, then select it at game startup. If the game is already running, choose it from the Items screen’s Options menu.
Why are menus showing on the GamePad?
That is normal when the GamePad is selected. Wind Waker HD uses its second screen for map and item functions. Choose the Pro Controller in Options for a TV-focused session, or use the GamePad’s minus button to enable Off-TV Play.
Do Wii Remotes, Switch controllers or generic USB pads work?
Nintendo’s Wind Waker HD documentation identifies only the Wii U GamePad and Wii U Pro Controller. Do not assume other controllers work with the native Wii U release without separate adapter or software support.
How do I get 5.1 surround sound?
Set the Wii U audio output to Surround, connect the console to an HDMI-equipped receiver with a High Speed HDMI Cable, connect the receiver to the TV, and configure it to accept multichannel linear PCM. The documented format is 5.1-channel linear PCM.
What if my television has no HDMI input?
Nintendo also documented Wii AV and component-cable connections. They require the matching Wii U cables and analog inputs, and they do not offer the same single-cable digital workflow as HDMI.
What should I check when buying a used Wii U?
Look for a complete bundle with a working console, GamePad, GamePad charging equipment and the required video cable. Current prices, stock and retailer terms vary, so verify those details when you buy.
