The reliable setup is short: connect through your VPS provider’s initial SSH or console access, install Tailscale, run sudo tailscale up, authenticate the device, and verify it in the admin console. You can then use its private Tailscale address for administration, enable Tailscale SSH, or configure the VPS as a subnet router or exit node. Keep the provider’s emergency console available until tailnet access has been tested.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What Tailscale adds to a Linux VPS
A normal VPS is reachable through a public IP address. That is useful for initial administration, but it also puts services such as SSH in the internet-facing attack surface. Tailscale adds the VPS to your tailnet, giving it a private Tailscale address in the 100.x range and, when enabled, a MagicDNS name. Enrolled devices can then connect over the tailnet instead of relying on the VPS’s public address.

Tailnet membership alone does not automatically make every service accessible. The service must be listening on the correct interface and your tailnet access policy must allow the connection. Tailscale also has distinct forwarding roles:
- Ordinary tailnet member: the VPS receives connections from other enrolled devices.
- Tailscale SSH host: the VPS accepts SSH through Tailscale’s policy-controlled SSH service.
- Subnet router: the VPS forwards traffic to machines on a private network that do not run Tailscale.
- Exit node: the VPS forwards a client’s non-Tailscale internet traffic.
Choose only the role you need. Advertising routes or internet egress gives the VPS more responsibility than simply joining the tailnet.

Prepare the VPS before installation
Confirm operating-system and account requirements
The Linux installer supports Ubuntu and Debian-family systems, RHEL, CentOS and Fedora derivatives, Raspberry Pi OS, Amazon Linux, openSUSE and SUSE, Oracle Linux, and VMware Photon OS. You need an account that can run commands with sudo, outbound internet access for package retrieval and control-plane communication, and a way to reach the machine before Tailscale works.
If your distribution is not covered by the installer, use a manual package installation or a static Tailscale binary. Static binaries require you to start tailscaled with a state file before running sudo tailscale up; the service-management details depend on the distribution.
Keep a recovery path
Use the cloud provider’s initial SSH access, serial console, web console, or equivalent emergency channel for the bootstrap. Do not close that path immediately after installation. A policy error, expired key, firewall change, or failed daemon update can otherwise lock you out.
Review the provider firewall
During bootstrap, permit the provider access method you are using and any application ports that must remain public. Once private services have been moved behind Tailscale, narrow the provider firewall to the remaining public requirements and let tailnet policy control private access. Tailscale does not replace the provider firewall for services that are intentionally public.
Install Tailscale on the VPS
1. Connect with the provider’s initial access
Log in through the provider’s documented SSH endpoint or console. Complete any operating-system updates and confirm that DNS and outbound HTTPS work before troubleshooting Tailscale.
2. Run the Linux installer
On a supported distribution, run the official install command:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →curl -fsSL https://tailscale.com/install.sh | sh
The script detects the distribution and installs the Tailscale client and daemon. Piping a downloaded script directly to a shell is convenient but may not fit an organization’s change-control requirements. If your policy prohibits that pattern, install the package manually from the distribution-specific instructions, or use a static binary on an unsupported distribution.
3. Start authentication
After installation, bring the node up:
sudo tailscale up
The command prints a login URL. Open it in a browser, authenticate to the intended tailnet, and authorize the VPS. If the command appears to wait, copy the URL from the terminal rather than assuming the daemon has failed.
4. Confirm the node in the admin console
Open the tailnet admin console and check the Machines page. The VPS should appear as an enrolled machine. Check its name, operating system, last-seen state, and assigned Tailscale address before changing SSH or routing policy.

5. Inspect local state
On the VPS, run:
tailscale status
Use the output to confirm that the local node is running, peers are visible as expected, and the VPS has a Tailscale address. From an enrolled client, connect to that 100.x address or the machine’s MagicDNS name. Test the actual service you intend to use; a healthy peer listing does not prove that an application is listening or that policy permits it.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the VPS as a private administration host
Connect without exposing SSH broadly
Once the client is enrolled, use the VPS’s Tailscale address or MagicDNS name as the destination for administrative connections. Keep the provider console available while testing. Verify all of the following from a separate enrolled device:
- The client is signed in to the same tailnet.
- The VPS appears online in
tailscale status. - The intended SSH or application service is running and listening.
- The tailnet policy allows the client to reach the destination port.
- The provider firewall is not blocking the required path.
After successful testing, you can remove broad public access to private services from the provider firewall. Do this service by service rather than disabling the emergency access path all at once.
Enable Tailscale SSH
Tailscale SSH lets the VPS provide SSH through Tailscale. Authentication and authorization are controlled by tailnet policy and Tailscale node keys, rather than by making port 22 generally reachable from the internet. The feature is documented for Linux devices and is available on all Tailscale plans.
1. Turn on the Tailscale SSH service
sudo tailscale set --ssh
This changes the node’s Tailscale configuration without requiring you to repeat unrelated options. Confirm that the command completes successfully, then test from an enrolled client.

Configure the tailnet policy so only the required users, groups, or devices can SSH to this VPS. Grant the minimum destination and login permissions needed for administration. Do not treat tailnet membership as permission to become root.
3. Test a non-root administrative account
Start with a normal administrative account and verify that you can perform routine tasks, use sudo when needed, and end the session cleanly. Test policy changes from a second enrolled client if possible. Keep the provider console open during the first test so a policy mistake can be reversed.
4. Transition the public firewall carefully
After Tailscale SSH works, remove broad internet access to port 22 if the VPS no longer needs public SSH. Retain the provider’s emergency console or a narrowly restricted break-glass path. A private SSH path is safer only if you can still recover the machine when the tailnet, policy, or local daemon is unavailable.
Configure the VPS as a subnet router
A subnet router is appropriate when tailnet devices must reach systems that cannot run Tailscale, such as appliances, legacy servers, or a private LAN. The VPS forwards traffic between the tailnet and the advertised network; it does not install a Tailscale client on every destination.

1. Choose precise routes
Write down the exact IPv4 and, if required, IPv6 CIDRs that the VPS can legitimately reach. Avoid advertising an entire provider or corporate network when only one application subnet is needed. Broad advertisements increase the impact of a policy error and can create overlapping-route problems.
2. Enable kernel forwarding
Linux normally uses kernel forwarding mode for subnet routing. Enable the protocols you intend to route. A temporary IPv4 and IPv6 setup is:
sudo sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1
sudo sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.forwarding=1
Persist the settings through your distribution’s normal system configuration, such as a file under /etc/sysctl.d/, and reload them with the distribution’s supported mechanism. Enabling IPv6 forwarding when you advertise only IPv4 is unnecessary; enabling an advertised protocol without forwarding it will produce confusing failures.
3. Advertise the routes
Run tailscale up with the exact networks, for example:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
sudo tailscale up --advertise-routes=192.168.50.0/24
For more than one network, advertise each required CIDR using the syntax supported by your installed Tailscale version. Be careful when rerunning tailscale up: specify the options you want to retain so an accidental configuration change does not remove an existing route.
4. Approve the routes in the admin console
Advertising is a request, not automatic authorization. In the admin console, locate the VPS under Machines, review the advertised routes, and approve only the CIDRs you intend to expose. Then add or update access rules so the appropriate tailnet users and devices may reach those networks.
5. Verify from another tailnet device
From an enrolled client, test a known host on the routed network and the specific application port. Check both directions of the path: the client must be allowed by tailnet policy, and the destination network must have a return route to the client’s traffic. If the remote network cannot route replies through the VPS, use the routing and source-NAT design appropriate to that network rather than assuming Tailscale can fix the return path.
Subnet-router safeguards
- Advertise only networks owned or administered by the VPS operator.
- Keep route approval and access-policy changes separate so each can be audited.
- Check for overlap with a client’s local LAN; overlapping private ranges can send traffic to the wrong interface.
- Monitor forwarding and firewall rules after operating-system updates.
Configure the VPS as an exit node
An exit node is different from a subnet router. It sends a client’s ordinary, non-Tailscale internet traffic through the VPS, so websites and other internet services generally see the VPS’s public egress address. Each client must explicitly select the exit node; merely advertising the capability does not redirect anyone.
1. Enable forwarding on the VPS
Enable IPv4 forwarding, and IPv6 forwarding if you will route IPv6 traffic, using the same kernel-forwarding approach described for subnet routing. Check the VPS operating system and provider firewall for rules that permit forwarded traffic and the required return path.

2. Advertise exit-node capability
sudo tailscale up --advertise-exit-node
The VPS will then appear as a candidate exit node for approval. Treat this as a high-impact capability: users’ general internet traffic, not just traffic to one private subnet, can traverse the server.
3. Approve the node and grant policy access
Approve the exit-node capability in the admin console. Where your tailnet policy requires it, grant access through autogroup:internet. Limit that grant to the users or groups who have a legitimate reason to use the VPS as an egress point.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches4. Select it on each client
On every client that should use the VPS, explicitly choose the approved exit node in the Tailscale client. A client that has not selected it continues using its normal internet connection. Local-LAN access is disabled by default when using an exit node; a client can enable it with:
--exit-node-allow-lan-access
Use that option only when the client must continue reaching its local network while sending internet traffic through the VPS.
5. Verify the egress path
From the client, check the public IP address reported by a service you trust and confirm it matches the VPS’s expected egress address. Test DNS-dependent applications, large transfers, and any services that enforce geographic or IP-based rules before relying on the configuration. The actual performance depends on the VPS provider, region, kernel, client connection, and workload; there is no universal throughput or latency figure that applies to every Linux VPS.

| Role | Does the VPS forward traffic? | Can public SSH be removed? | Authentication model | Advertised scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tailnet member | No; it primarily receives connections to services running on the VPS. | Usually, after private administration has been tested and an emergency path is retained. | Interactive device enrollment; policy controls which peers may connect. | The VPS’s own Tailscale address and permitted services. |
| Tailscale SSH host | No additional network forwarding is required. | Yes, for administration, once Tailscale SSH and recovery access are verified. | Tailnet policy and Tailscale node keys. | SSH access to the VPS for authorized users or groups. |
| Subnet router | Yes; it forwards traffic to advertised private CIDRs. | Not inherently; SSH exposure is a separate firewall and service decision. | Tailnet enrollment plus route and access-policy grants. | Only the approved IPv4 and IPv6 networks. |
| Exit node | Yes; it forwards clients’ non-Tailscale internet traffic. | Not inherently; administration must still be secured separately. | Tailnet enrollment, exit-node approval, and any required autogroup:internet grant. |

Automate enrollment without leaking credentials
Interactive login is suitable for a one-off VPS. Automated provisioning needs a narrowly scoped authentication method, such as a short-lived or restricted auth key where supported, or a supported workload-identity flow. Do not paste long-lived credentials into cloud-init output, shell history, CI logs, public infrastructure code, or process listings.

Manage keys, updates, and recovery
Reauthentication and key expiry
Tailscale devices periodically require reauthentication. To force a fresh login on the VPS, run:
sudo tailscale up --force-reauth
Disabling key expiry can reduce operational interruptions for a trusted, controlled device, but it also extends the life of a stolen or forgotten node key. Treat that setting as an explicit security trade-off, not a default convenience.
Best Value
Retire or replace a VPS
When a VPS is decommissioned, compromised, or rebuilt, revoke its device keys promptly in the admin console. Remove obsolete route or exit-node approvals and review policy grants that referenced the old machine. Reinstalling the operating system is not a substitute for revoking a tailnet identity.
Keep the control plane and host current
Update Tailscale and the operating system through your normal maintenance process. Record the VPS provider, recovery console location, tailnet owner, advertised routes, exit-node status, and the procedure for reauthentication. A short recovery runbook is particularly valuable when the person who performed the original enrollment is unavailable.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The installer fails or the command is unavailable
- Confirm the distribution is one of the supported families and that the account can use
sudo. - Check DNS, outbound HTTPS, package-manager errors, disk space, and system time.
- If the installer is not appropriate for your change-control policy, use manual packages or a static binary and start
tailscaledwith a state file.
tailscale up prints no usable login result
Run it from the provider console or an interactive SSH session, copy the printed URL exactly, and complete authentication in a browser. If the terminal session was interrupted, rerun sudo tailscale up and check whether the node already appears in the admin console. Do not create multiple machine identities simply because the first browser attempt was abandoned.
The VPS appears online but cannot be reached
Start with tailscale status. Then test the destination by its Tailscale address or MagicDNS name, verify that the service is listening, and inspect tailnet policy and host-level firewall rules. An online node can still reject a port, bind only to localhost, or be blocked by an access rule.
Tailscale SSH is denied
Check that sudo tailscale set --ssh was run on the VPS, that the client is enrolled in the intended tailnet, and that policy grants the specific user and destination. Test a non-root administrative account first. Use the provider console to undo a policy or local configuration error.
A subnet route is approved but hosts do not respond
Confirm that forwarding is enabled for the advertised protocol, the route is approved on the correct machine, and the client has policy access. Check the destination host’s return route and local firewall. Also look for overlapping CIDRs on the client’s local network; an overlap can prevent traffic from reaching the VPS at all.
Exit-node traffic still uses the client’s connection
Ensure the client explicitly selected the approved exit node and has the required policy grant. Verify the public egress address from the client rather than inferring the route from the admin console. If local resources stop working, remember that local-LAN access is disabled by default and must be enabled deliberately with --exit-node-allow-lan-access.
The VPS was rebuilt or the key expired
Use the provider’s recovery path, inspect the machine’s status in the admin console, and run sudo tailscale up --force-reauth when a new login is required. Remove the old machine identity and any stale route or exit-node approvals before treating the replacement as trusted.
Quick Recap
Production checklist
- Record the provider console or emergency access method before changing SSH.
- Install Tailscale on a supported distribution, or choose a documented manual/static-binary path.
- Run
sudo tailscale up, authenticate the correct tailnet, and confirm the machine on the Machines page. - Verify
tailscale statusand connect from a second enrolled device using the Tailscale address or MagicDNS name. - Test the actual service and its policy before closing public access.
- If using Tailscale SSH, enable it with
sudo tailscale set --ssh, apply least-privilege grants, and test a non-root account. - If using subnet routing, enable the required forwarding protocols, advertise only necessary CIDRs, approve them, and test return routing.
- If using an exit node, advertise and approve the capability, grant the required policy access, select it on each client, and verify public egress.
- Protect automation credentials, keep keys and software current, and document reauthentication and revocation procedures.
