Most SkyFactory 4 startup failures come from one of four mistakes: the server is using the wrong Java runtime, the EULA has not been accepted, the startup script is hiding a Forge error, or the pack was launched as a vanilla Minecraft server. SkyFactory 4 is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.12.2, and its server files must be installed and launched separately from a client instance.

Confirm that you have the right SkyFactory 4 server files
The CurseForge project listing identifies SkyFactory 4 version 4.2.4 for Minecraft 1.12.2; that project page was updated on December 13, 2021. Treat 4.2.4 as the latest release established by that listing rather than assuming a newer pack version. The listing shows 14,118,500 total project downloads, but that figure does not indicate server compatibility or performance.
A client installation is not a server installation. Download the server files from the SkyFactory 4 project’s Files area, extract them into a dedicated server directory, and do not mix that directory with a launcher profile used to play the client. The server package should contain the supplied installation and startup scripts, Forge files, mods, configuration files, and libraries. A host that receives only a vanilla Minecraft jar, or only part of the pack, cannot reproduce the intended SkyFactory environment.

Use a clean directory
- Create one folder exclusively for the server, such as
C:SkyFactory4Serveron Windows. - Extract the complete server download there rather than copying individual mods from a client folder.
- Keep backups outside the live folder before changing configuration or deleting a world.
- Do not overwrite the server’s Forge, mods, configs, or scripts with files from a different SkyFactory release.
Complete installation and accept the EULA
The first startup is an installation step, not a normal play session. Run the supplied install.bat on Windows or install.sh on a Unix-like system. The installer creates or downloads the Forge server components expected by the pack.
- Open the server folder and run the supplied installation script.
- Start the generated Forge server once. This creates files including
eula.txtand the initial configuration. - Open
eula.txtand change the setting toeula=trueonly after reading and accepting Mojang’s EULA. - Save the file and run the configured
ServerStart.bat(or the corresponding startup script supplied for your operating system) again.
If the batch window closes immediately after installation, the setup may be incomplete or the script may be unable to invoke the intended Java runtime. Do not keep double-clicking it; run it from an existing command prompt so the error remains visible.

Check Java 8 and the executable the script actually calls
SkyFactory 4 belongs to the Minecraft 1.12.2 generation. Reports across SkyFactory 4 server cases consistently use Java 8, including Java 8u201, OpenJDK 8u362, and OpenJDK 8u392. A newer Java installation may be present on the computer while the startup script still points to a different executable, so checking the version in a separate terminal is not enough.
Verify the runtime from the server context
- Open Command Prompt or PowerShell.
- Change to the server directory, for example:
cd /d "C:SkyFactory4Server". - Run
java -version. - Compare the output with the Java executable referenced by
ServerStart.bat.
The command should report a Java 8 runtime. If the script contains an explicit path, that path—not the system-wide java command—determines what the server uses. If several Java versions are installed, replace an ambiguous java command in the batch file with the full path to the 64-bit Java 8 executable. Keep the path quoted when it contains spaces.

Typical Java symptoms
| Symptom | Likely Java issue | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The window flashes and disappears | The script fails before the console can be read, often because Java is missing or the path is wrong. | Run the script from Command Prompt and inspect the first error; verify java -version in that same context. |
| The server stops during Forge or mod loading | The selected runtime is incompatible with this 1.12.2 pack or is not the Java 8 runtime expected by the script. | Point the script to a 64-bit Java 8 executable and retry from a visible console. |
| Java 8 is installed but behavior differs between machines | Different scripts, services, or hosts are invoking different Java executables. | Print the version from the exact startup script context and check its configured path. |
Java version reports in issue discussions are diagnostic examples, not a performance benchmark. They establish the compatibility baseline, not a promise that every Java 8 build behaves identically.
Stop the disappearing ServerStart.bat window
A window that opens and closes has not proved that the server failed for one particular reason; it has only hidden the reason. Forge support recommends running the jar manually when the server window disappears so the output can be captured.

- Change to the server folder:
cd /d "C:SkyFactory4Server". - Run
ServerStart.batby typing its name and pressing Enter. - Read the console from the first error, not just the final “stopped” line.
- After the process exits, inspect
latest.logand, when generated,debug.log.
Capture the complete console output and the relevant log files before reinstalling. The earliest exception usually identifies the missing file, Java mismatch, permission problem, or mod-loading failure; later errors can merely be consequences of that first failure.
What to look for in the output
- EULA messages: If the console says the EULA has not been accepted, stop the server, set
eula=true, and start it again. - Java or executable errors: A message that Java cannot be found, cannot be executed, or exits immediately points to the runtime path or installation.
- Forge and mod-loading exceptions: These indicate that the Forge server or its mod/configuration stack is incomplete or inconsistent.
- Permission and file errors: Check that the account running the script can read and write the server directory, especially after moving it or running it under a hosting service.
Do not delete logs before saving them. Reinstalling without preserving the first failure removes the evidence needed to distinguish a bad download from a bad configuration.

Make sure you are launching Forge, not vanilla Minecraft
Having a file named minecraft_server.1.12.2.jar does not make it a SkyFactory server. Launching that vanilla jar can create an apparently healthy process while omitting the mod loader, mods, custom configuration, advancements, and SkyFactory world behavior.
The correct process is the Forge server generated by the SkyFactory server pack and referenced by ServerStart.bat. A DarkPacks host report describes a vanilla installation that produced missing mod advancements and incorrect world generation; the maintainer’s remedy was to deploy the Forge jar together with all mods, configs, and scripts.

- The console starts without the expected Forge and mod-loading stages.
- Clients receive missing-mod or mod-list mismatch errors even though the pack appears in the server folder.
- The world lacks SkyFactory starter content, advancements, or expected generator behavior.
- A plain vanilla world is created under a setup that was supposed to be SkyFactory.
Stop the process, back up the directory, and return to the supplied server startup script. Do not “fix” a vanilla world by copying random client files into it; restore the complete Forge-based server stack first.
If the server starts but nobody can join
A running console proves only that a process is alive. It does not prove that the process is listening on the expected interface or that players can reach it. For timeout and connection-refused errors, check the server process, version parity, port, firewall, and host networking separately.

Verify the process and the pack version
- Leave the Forge console running and confirm it remains alive after startup.
- Make sure every player uses the same SkyFactory release as the server, including 4.2.4 when that is the server’s selected pack version.
- Confirm that the client is also for Minecraft 1.12.2.
- Read the client’s connection error literally: a timeout usually indicates reachability, while a refusal often means no process is listening at the destination.
Check port and firewall settings
The standard Minecraft server port is 25565, but the actual value is the one configured in server.properties. Verify that the server is using the intended port and that the operating-system firewall permits the Java process to accept inbound connections on it. If a host or router is involved, its network rules must also forward or expose that port to the machine running Forge.
A DarkPacks report describes a server that appeared to run but became unreachable after a restart; another records repeated 30-second LAN timeouts despite Java 8 on both sides. Those cases show why a successful launch and a successful connection are separate checks.
Local versus remote testing
- Test from the server computer first. A local connection failure points toward the Forge process, port setting, or local firewall.
- Test from another computer on the same network next. A local success with LAN failure points toward host firewall or network isolation.
- For internet players, verify router forwarding, the host’s public address, and any provider-level firewall in addition to the Windows or Linux firewall.
Do not change Java versions merely because a remote connection times out when the Forge console is healthy. Network reachability requires a separate diagnosis.

If the world loads as a plain void or lacks SkyFactory starter items and advancements, first determine whether the world was created by the vanilla jar. Then inspect server.properties, especially the SkyFactory generator setting, and confirm that the Forge server—not minecraft_server.1.12.2.jar—created the world.
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Make a complete backup of the current world directory and server files.
- Correct the generator-related setting in
server.propertiesand restore the Forge startup path. - Start the server and verify the console’s Forge and mod-loading stages.
- Only after the backup is safe, remove the incorrectly generated world if a fresh world is required.
- Start again and check for the expected SkyFactory starter content and advancements.
Deleting a world is destructive. If the world contains player builds, preserve it and investigate the generator and startup path before deciding that a reset is appropriate. A 2025 DarkPacks issue reported a vanilla void world, missing starter items, and missing advancements after a host used the wrong server or configuration path.

Choose a remedy that preserves the mod stack
When deciding between reinstalling locally, repairing the existing directory, or moving to managed hosting, judge the option against five practical criteria: preservation of the official Forge/mod/configuration stack, visibility of logs, Java 8 compatibility, control over server.properties, firewall and port access, and the amount of local administration you want.
| Remedy | Best when | Advantages | Risks or checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repair the existing server folder | The files are complete and logs identify a Java, EULA, or configuration mistake. | Preserves the world and gives maximum control. | Back up first; confirm the script uses Forge and Java 8. |
| Reinstall the official server pack | The directory contains a vanilla jar, mixed releases, or missing mods/configs. | Restores the intended file structure and startup scripts. | Copy worlds only after confirming release compatibility; do not overwrite a backup. |
| Managed Minecraft hosting for modpacks | You need a host to handle process supervision and network access. | Can reduce local firewall and uptime administration. | Verify in advance that the service accepts custom Forge 1.12.2 modpacks, exposes logs, allows the required port and settings, and supports the complete SkyFactory file set. |
No provider, price, uptime figure, or affiliate offer is established here. Hosting is a change in administration, not a substitute for confirming Forge, Java 8, the EULA, and the complete mod/configuration stack.
A complete recovery checklist
- Confirm the server is SkyFactory 4 version 4.2.4 for Minecraft 1.12.2, or document the exact version selected by all players.
- Use the dedicated server download, not a copied client instance.
- Run
install.batorinstall.shfrom the clean server directory. - Start the generated Forge server once so it creates
eula.txt. - Set
eula=trueafter accepting the EULA. - Run
java -versionfrom the same command prompt or script context used to start the server. - Ensure the startup script invokes a 64-bit Java 8 executable.
- Run
ServerStart.batfrom an already-open command prompt so errors remain visible. - Save the console output,
latest.log, and anydebug.log. - Confirm that the process is the Forge server generated by the pack, not
minecraft_server.1.12.2.jar. - If players cannot connect, check the live process, matching client/server pack versions, the configured port (normally 25565), Java firewall permissions, router rules, and host networking.
- If world generation is wrong, back up the world, correct
server.properties, and regenerate only when necessary.
When to stop troubleshooting and rebuild
Rebuild the server directory when the logs show missing Forge files, the folder contains a vanilla-only installation, mods and configs came from multiple pack versions, or the installer never completed. Preserve the world and logs outside the directory first. A clean official server pack is safer than trying to reconstruct a modded 1.12.2 environment by hand.
If a clean installation still exits, the visible console output and logs should accompany any support request. Include the Java version, the exact SkyFactory release, the startup command or script, and whether the failure occurs before or after Forge begins loading. That information separates a Java-path problem from a missing-file, mod, EULA, or network problem.
