The standard recipe turns two wool blocks into three carpets, and the game has 16 standard colors. You can craft the color you need, recolor carpet with dyes when your edition supports that recipe, find carpet in several generated structures, or obtain it from shepherd-villager trades. This guide explains each route, the Java-versus-Bedrock differences, and practical ways to use carpet in floors, rugs, paths and color-coded rooms.

What carpet is in Minecraft
Carpet is a low-profile decorative block. It adds a colored surface without replacing the main block underneath, so it is useful when you want a floor treatment, border or visual zone while preserving the structure of the room. Carpet is not a separate building material family with unique textures for every shade; it follows the wool color system and has 16 standard variants.

The most reliable way to obtain a specific shade is to start with wool of that same color. If you already have a carpet and dye, recoloring may be faster, but the exact recipe is edition-sensitive. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition do not document every dye operation identically, and Education Edition or snapshots can diverge again. Always check the edition and version shown on the title screen before building a large palette around a recoloring method.
How to craft carpet
Standard wool recipe
Use two wool blocks of the same color in a crafting grid. Place them next to each other horizontally; the recipe produces three carpets in that wool’s color. A mixed-color pair does not make a blended carpet, so use matching wool if you want a predictable result.

- Open a 2×2 inventory grid or a crafting table.
- Place two wool blocks of the chosen color in adjacent slots on one row.
- Take the three carpets from the output slot.
The recipe is economical for large floors because each pair of wool blocks yields several thin surface pieces. Crafting remains the clearest route when you need a repeatable color and already have a wool supply or a farm that produces the required shade.
Crafting the color you actually need
Choose the wool first, then craft. White wool gives white carpet; red wool gives red carpet, and so on through the complete 16-color list below. If your wool is the wrong shade, dye the wool before crafting or use an edition-supported carpet-dye recipe. Do not assume that a dye placed beside an already colored carpet will behave the same way in every edition.
Java and Bedrock dye rules
Dye handling is the main point at which a generic recipe can mislead players. The cited recipe references describe Java recoloring with a matching dye, while Bedrock documentation separately describes white-carpet dyeing and a bleach route for returning dyed carpet to white in supported editions. Another dye reference states: “A carpet of any color can be dyed by combining 1 carpet with any dye in a crafting grid.” Because these descriptions distinguish edition behavior, treat recoloring as a version-checked operation rather than a universal recipe.
| Task | Java Edition guidance | Bedrock Edition guidance | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Craft new carpet | Use two matching wool blocks; the standard output is three carpets in that wool color. | Use the same matching-wool recipe. | Confirm that both wool blocks are the same color. |
| Recolor existing carpet | References document combining carpet with a matching dye; a separate dye reference describes any carpet plus any dye. Use the recipe recognized by your current Java version. | References document white-carpet dyeing and certain direct dye substitutions. Supported versions also document bleaching dyed carpet back to white. | Check the in-game recipe book or the current edition’s recipe page before converting a large stock. |
| Return dyed carpet to white | Do not assume a Bedrock bleach route exists in the same form. | A bleach route is documented for supported editions. | Test one carpet first, because snapshots and other editions can change recipe behavior. |
If a recipe does not appear, the usual causes are an edition mismatch, a dye that is not the required color for that operation, or a version whose recipe table differs from the page you consulted. Crafting fresh matching-color wool is the least ambiguous fallback.
All 16 standard carpet colors
Minecraft’s standard carpet palette contains 16 colors. This count covers the listed vanilla variants; it does not claim that mods, resource packs or marketplace content cannot add different visual colors.

| Color | Typical design role | Palette-planning question |
|---|---|---|
| White | Clean base, trim or neutral rug | Will it contrast with the floor without disappearing into pale blocks? |
| Orange | Warm accent and directional stripe | Does it reinforce terracotta, copper or autumn colors? |
| Magenta | Strong focal accent | Can the room use one vivid highlight rather than many competing ones? |
| Light blue | Cool accent for water, ice or sky themes | Does it separate clearly from cyan and blue nearby? |
| Yellow | High-visibility marker | Will the surrounding blocks provide enough contrast? |
| Lime | Bright plant, potion or game-room accent | Does a smaller area keep the color from overwhelming the floor? |
| Pink | Soft highlight or bedroom palette | Does it pair better with white, gray or dark framing? |
| Gray | Industrial, neutral or low-contrast surface | Should it blend with stone, deepslate or metal-like blocks? |
| Light gray | Bright neutral transition | Can it separate white from darker gray without a hard color jump? |
| Cyan | Cool saturated accent | Will it be distinct from light blue in the room’s lighting? |
| Purple | Magical, ceremonial or Nether-themed accent | Does it need a neutral border to remain readable? |
| Blue | Water, banner or team-color marker | Is a darker stripe more useful than a lighter blue field? |
| Brown | Earthy, wood-compatible rug color | Will it read as a deliberate rug rather than blend into planks? |
| Green | Garden, map or nature-themed area | Does it need a contrasting outline against grass? |
| Red | Alert, ceremonial or hospitality accent | Where can one red area guide attention without dominating? |
| Black | Strong outline, formal rug or high-contrast marker | Will the surrounding floor keep the edge visible? |
Color names are fixed, but perceived color depends on the blocks around the carpet. Compare a sample beside the intended floor, wall and lighting before crafting hundreds of pieces. Palette fit is often more important than selecting the theoretically brightest color.
Where carpet generates naturally
Carpet can appear in generated structures, so exploration can supply decorative pieces before you have a reliable wool-and-dye operation. The documented locations include igloos, woodland mansions, villages and ancient cities. The colors and amounts vary by structure, meaning a visit may provide useful accents but is not a guaranteed way to obtain a complete 16-color collection.
- Igloos: Check the carpet used as part of the generated interior.
- Woodland mansions: Rooms can contain decorative carpet in structure-specific colors.
- Villages: Carpet may be part of generated house interiors or other village decoration.
- Ancient cities: Explore the generated areas for carpet used in their visual design.
Structure generation and loot details can differ by edition and version. If you are planning a survival build around a particular color, treat found carpet as a bonus and keep crafting or trading as your dependable supply route.
Getting carpet from a shepherd villager
Shepherd villagers can provide another acquisition path. The documented trade context is an apprentice shepherd offering four carpets of one color for one emerald. The same reference reports a 1/32 chance (3.125%) for one of the 16 carpet types in that trade context. Those figures are tied to the referenced trading table; edition, version and future balance changes can alter villager offers.
| Method | Best when | Main cost or uncertainty |
|---|---|---|
| Craft matching wool | You need a predictable color in bulk. | Requires matching wool and, if necessary, dye ingredients. |
| Explore structures | You are already visiting igloos, mansions, villages or ancient cities. | Colors and quantities are structure-dependent and not guaranteed. |
| Shepherd trade | You have emeralds and want repeated purchases after finding the desired offer. | The reported offer and color chance depend on edition and trading-table version. |
For a survival project, combine methods: collect any carpet found while exploring, craft the bulk of the floor from matching wool, and use shepherd trades when their offer supplies a color that is expensive or inconvenient to craft.

Using carpet in a build
Rugs and floor borders
A rectangle of carpet can define a seating area, hallway or entrance without changing the floor’s structural material. A one-block-wide border creates a frame around a larger floor, while a smaller central rectangle reads as a rug. Use a contrasting outline when the main color is close to the underlying floor; use a neighboring shade when you want a softer transition.
Room zoning
Assign one carpet color to each function in a large interior. For example, one shade can mark a storage aisle, another a crafting area and a third a meeting or display zone. Keep the same color assignment throughout the build so the floor becomes a visual navigation system rather than random decoration.
Paths and directional stripes
A narrow carpet strip can guide players from a doorway to a focal point. Straight strips work in corridors, while short perpendicular bars can indicate intersections. Reserve the strongest colors for decision points and use neutral carpet for ordinary walking areas.
Color-coded areas
Carpet is useful for marking team rooms, crop categories, map displays or themed exhibits. Pick colors that remain distinguishable beside the blocks used in each area. If two shades look similar in the room’s lighting, add a different border or pattern rather than relying on color alone.

Transitions between materials
When a build changes from stone to wood, or from an exterior path to an interior floor, a thin carpet band can act as a visual threshold. Matching the band to an existing wall accent makes the transition intentional; a neutral shade keeps it from competing with both floor materials.

Planning a carpet palette before crafting
- List the surrounding blocks. Record the floor, walls, ceiling and major furniture colors.
- Choose one base and one accent. A restrained palette is easier to read than 16 colors used at once.
- Test samples in the actual room. Place a few pieces where shadows and nearby blocks will affect the appearance.
- Decide whether the color is structural or decorative. Use a repeated border for navigation and a contained rug for emphasis.
- Estimate acquisition cost. Crafting consumes matching wool and dyes; exploration consumes travel time; trading consumes emeralds and depends on the villager offer.
- Build a small section first. Confirm the pattern at full scale before committing the rest of the materials.
This process separates palette decisions from resource collection. It also prevents a common waste pattern: crafting a large quantity of a shade that looked attractive in isolation but disappears beside the finished floor.

Inset rug
Leave a consistent margin of the main floor around a carpet rectangle. A one-color interior is the simplest version; add a one-block-wide outline when the rug needs a stronger edge. Keep the outline continuous at corners so the shape reads as one object.

Run a neutral strip down the center or along both sides of a corridor. Add short accent sections at doors and intersections. Repeating the same spacing makes the carpet function as wayfinding instead of visual noise.
Checker or stripe pattern
Alternate two colors in a regular grid or in parallel bands. Use colors with clearly different values, such as a dark neutral and a light neutral, when the pattern must remain legible from a distance. Highly saturated pairs are better reserved for small areas.
Functional color map
Assign each color to one category and repeat it wherever that category appears. For example, one color can identify storage, another farms and another public entrances. Add signs for accessibility and for players who may not distinguish every color equally.

Troubleshooting common carpet problems
The recipe produces no carpet
- Confirm that both wool blocks are present and have the same color.
- Check that you placed the wool in adjacent slots rather than diagonally separated slots.
- Use a crafting table if the inventory grid does not expose the expected recipe in your version.
- Verify the edition and version; recipe documentation can differ between Java, Bedrock, Education and snapshots.
The dye does not recolor the carpet
Do not infer a universal rule from another edition. Java references describe matching-dye recoloring, while Bedrock references separately describe white-carpet dyeing, direct substitutions for certain dyes and bleaching back to white in supported versions. Check the recipe book for your installation and test one piece before processing a full stock.
The color looks wrong in the finished room
Move a sample beside the final floor, wall and light sources. Carpet colors can appear weaker or stronger against different blocks. If the shade lacks contrast, change the border, surrounding block or carpet color instead of multiplying the same failed pattern.
A structure did not contain the expected color
Generated carpet is location- and structure-dependent. The documented list confirms that igloos, woodland mansions, villages and ancient cities can contain carpet, but it does not guarantee a particular color in every world or edition. Craft matching wool or seek a shepherd trade when the project requires certainty.
The shepherd trade is unavailable
Trading tables can vary by edition and version, and the reported apprentice offer is not guaranteed for every villager. Check the villager’s profession and level, then compare the offer with the current trading table for your version. Keep crafting as the fallback when the needed color does not appear.
Edition and version checklist
- Identify whether the world is running Java, Bedrock, Education or a snapshot.
- Use the matching-wool recipe for the most consistent way to create a known color.
- Check recoloring recipes in the current edition before relying on dye or bleach.
- Qualify structure locations and shepherd trades by version when documenting a survival route.
- Test a one-piece sample before spending a large wool, dye or emerald stock.
The 16-color count is the standard vanilla list. Mods and resource packs may change appearance or add content, so a custom installation should not be treated as evidence that vanilla has additional carpet colors.
Which acquisition method should you choose?
Choose crafting when the build has a defined palette and you need predictable quantities. Choose exploration when you are already searching structures and can use whatever colors you find. Choose shepherd trading when emeralds are available and the villager offers the color you need. A mixed strategy is usually the most efficient for a large project: craft the base color, reserve found carpet for accents, and use trades to fill gaps.
For most builders, the practical decision comes down to two axes: palette fit and acquisition cost. A color that perfectly matches the room but requires a rare trade may be less useful than a close shade made from readily available wool. Conversely, a cheap color can make the build look unfinished if it disappears against the floor. Sample first, then commit resources.
