Spotify uses “Jam” and “Mix” for different features. Start a Jam for a live shared queue; use Mix to add transitions to a playlist you created. Blend combines friends’ listening tastes in a playlist, while Spotify Mixes are personalized recommendations.
Choose the Spotify feature that matches what you want to do

How to start and invite people to a Spotify Jam
A Jam lets participants contribute songs to a queue while listening together, either in person or remotely. Spotify says a Premium subscription is required to start and host one.

Start a Jam on mobile
- Start playing music or open a public playlist in Spotify.
- Tap Connect device, then select Start a Jam.
- Tap Invite and share the invitation link or QR code with guests.
Start a Jam on desktop
- Open the three-dot menu for a track or playlist, or right-click it.
- Select Start a Jam.
- Choose Invite and share the link or QR code.
Host through a TV or car
Spotify on TV supports in-person Jam playback through the TV’s speakers. Open the queue’s Queue & Jam view to show a QR code guests can scan or share. Host settings on the TV can control guest playback and volume access, as well as automatic invitations on that device.
Spotify also documents in-person Jams through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Its current Android Auto guidance specifies Android Auto 14.5 or later and Spotify app version 9.0.50 or later. These are Spotify’s stated requirements and may change.

How friends join a Jam—and what Free users can do
Guests can follow the host’s invitation link, scan the QR code, or use the nearby-phone method when available. For the latter, Spotify says logged-in users with Bluetooth enabled can bring their phones within about one meter. Select whether to listen in person or remotely, then tap Join.
- Remote listening: Joining remotely requires Premium.
- In-person listening: A Free user can join a Jam hosted by a Premium subscriber and add songs.
- Guest controls: The host can limit guest control of playback so guests can add songs without controlling what is playing.
Spotify says Jams work with smart speakers and most Bluetooth speakers. Shared volume control is available with Chromecast and Amazon Cast, but not with Bluetooth devices or Apple AirPlay. If a Jam will not start, Spotify recommends confirming that the host has active Premium and has selected the intended playback device. If shared volume control is unavailable, check that the playback device supports it and that the host has enabled it.

How to add Mix transitions to a Spotify playlist
Playlist Mix applies transitions to a playlist you created; it does not create a shared live queue. Spotify’s Mixed Playlists instructions make the feature available to Premium users.

- Select Mix to apply Auto transitions across its tracks.
- To customize a transition, select the transition row and adjust volume, EQ, or effects, then save.
After applying Mix, each song displays its BPM and Song Key. Spotify documents low-pass and high-pass filters among the available effects. You cannot edit transitions in Offline mode. Turn Mix off to play the playlist normally; turning it on again restores the saved transitions.

Choose a playback route that preserves transitions
Premium listeners hear the playlist with transitions. Free listeners hear it as a regular playlist. Spotify says mixed playlists can play with transitions on speakers and other devices over Bluetooth, but play as regular playlists through Spotify Connect. If the transitions matter, use a supported Bluetooth or speaker route rather than Spotify Connect.
How to create a Blend with friends
Blend is a persistent shared playlist based on participants’ listening activity, not Jam’s synchronous queue. Spotify says it refreshes daily and allows up to 10 invited friends.

Create a Blend on mobile
- Open Your Library.
- Tap Plus, then choose Blend.
- Tap Invite and share the link.
Create a Blend on desktop
- Go to Search → Browse all → Made for You.
- Select Create Blend, then Invite.
- Share the invitation link with friends.
Participants’ profile pictures and usernames may appear in social recommendation playlists. See Spotify’s guidance on social recommendations in playlists.

Spotify Mixes are personalized playlists grouped into categories such as Daily, Artist, Mood, Decade, Genre, and Niche. To browse them, go to Search → Browse all → Made for You. They are distinct from Mix transitions, which you apply to a playlist you created. Spotify lists the categories in its Spotify Mixes help page.
