The process is not identical across brands: some bulbs join 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi directly, while others pair through a bridge, Bluetooth or a compatible smart-home controller.
Before you start, check the bulb’s requirements
Read the model’s manual or packaging before installing it. Confirm its socket and fixture compatibility, the app to use, whether it needs a hub or controller, and which network bands and setup methods it supports. Do not assume that instructions for one brand apply to another.

For example, TP-Link’s Kasa bulb Wi-Fi setup guide says, “Your smart bulb requires a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network and an always-on power supply.” That requirement applies to the Kasa setup described by TP-Link, not to every smart bulb. TP-Link’s Kasa bulb setup guide was updated May 15, 2026.
- Make sure you can access the correct manufacturer’s app and your home Wi-Fi password.
- Check whether the bulb needs a bridge or compatible controller rather than a direct Wi-Fi connection.
- If the model requires the wall switch to stay on, choose a fixture where power can remain on after setup.
Set up a bulb that connects directly to Wi-Fi
- Install the bulb in a compatible fixture and switch on power as its manufacturer directs.
- Connect your phone to the home Wi-Fi network required by the bulb. TP-Link’s cited Kasa instructions and WiZ’s instructions describe 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; confirm the band for your own model. WiZ’s guide to adding lights also says to connect the phone to home Wi-Fi before adding lights.
- Open the bulb’s manufacturer app and choose its add-device, add-light or setup option. Follow the prompts, including any request for Bluetooth access or connection to a temporary bulb network.
- If the app asks you to join a temporary network, follow its directions and return to the app afterward. For some iOS Kasa setups, TP-Link says users may need to join the temporary TP-LINK_Smart Bulb network manually in the phone’s Wi-Fi settings. This is a Kasa-specific step, not a general instruction for all bulbs.
- Complete the app prompts, give the bulb a name or room if offered, and test that you can switch it on and off in the app.
Once the bulb is working in its manufacturer’s app, you can link a supported voice assistant if you want one. Assistant linking is a separate step in many setups and depends on the bulb and ecosystem.

Understand the connection paths: Wi-Fi, Bridge, Bluetooth and Matter
“Connect to Wi-Fi” does not describe every smart-bulb setup. Philips Hue documents several paths, and the right one depends on the product and your existing equipment. Philips Hue’s bulb and lamp setup guide describes these options:
- Hue Bridge: Add the Bridge to the Hue app, then set up bulbs through that Bridge.
- Bluetooth: Set up compatible Hue lights without a Bridge using the Hue app’s Bluetooth option.
- Direct Matter setup: Eligible Matter-enabled Hue lights can be set up through Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa with a compatible Matter controller and Thread border router. A Hue bulb already connected to a Bridge must be removed from that Bridge before direct Matter pairing.
These are distinct setup routes, not interchangeable steps to try at random. Check the guide for your exact bulb and the equipment you have. WiZ likewise advises users to add lights through its app, with specific options depending on the light and app version.

If the bulb will not connect
Start with the simple checks before changing router settings. The following checks apply broadly; some deeper network suggestions are specific to TP-Link’s documented Kasa setup failure guidance.
- Power: Make sure the bulb is switched on and receiving power. For the cited Kasa setup, leave the wall switch on so the bulb has an always-on supply.
- Correct setup path: Verify that you have the right app and are following instructions for the exact model. Check whether the bulb expects direct Wi-Fi, a temporary setup network, Bluetooth, a bridge or a Matter controller.
- Wi-Fi band and phone network: Check the required band for the bulb and make sure the phone is connected to the intended home network. For Kasa and WiZ examples above, the instructions specify 2.4 GHz.
- Signal and password: Move the bulb or phone closer to the router during setup if signal may be weak, and carefully re-enter the Wi-Fi password.
If those steps do not work for a Kasa bulb, consult TP-Link’s Kasa connection troubleshooting guide. It discusses checking router signal, confirming the phone is on the same home network, and verifying the password. It also lists router settings such as WPA2+AES, channels and channel width, and suggests temporarily disabling or separating the 5 GHz network as possible checks for that documented issue. These are manufacturer troubleshooting suggestions for Kasa, not universal router requirements or a guaranteed fix. Do not weaken network security or change router settings unless the bulb and router manufacturers support the change.
