Which Android Settings Affect Wireless Android Auto Connections?

For wireless Android Auto setup, keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on, then pair your phone with the car over Bluetooth while the car is parked and its infotainment system is on. Those are the phone settings Google identifies for setup; changing unrelated battery or Wi-Fi-scanning options is not an established general fix.

Which phone settings should be on?

  • Bluetooth: Turn it on to pair the phone and car. Google says the first wireless connection requires Bluetooth pairing.
  • Wi-Fi: Leave it on during setup. Wireless Android Auto requires a phone with 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, so turning Wi-Fi off is not a general troubleshooting step.
  • Location Services: Keep it on while completing setup. Google also identifies Location as relevant to Android Auto functions such as navigation.

Google’s setup guidance puts it plainly: “For best results, keep your phone’s Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services turned on while you complete the setup.” Google Android Auto Help: Set up Android Auto.

How to set up the wireless connection

  1. Park the car and turn on its infotainment system.
  2. On the phone, turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services.
  3. Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and follow the car’s pairing prompts to pair the devices. Menu labels and paths vary by phone brand and Android version; use Settings search for “Bluetooth” if needed.
  4. Follow any prompts on the phone and vehicle display. The first wireless connection uses Bluetooth pairing; Android Auto should start within a few seconds after pairing. If it does not, select Android Auto on the vehicle display if that option appears.

Android Auto is integrated into compatible phones for car-display use; a separate app download is not required. Google’s setup instructions.

Check compatibility before changing more settings

Wireless projection requires support on both sides: the phone must support wireless Android Auto and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and the specific car or stereo must support wireless Android Auto. Google also lists an active data plan among the phone requirements. Requirements and availability can vary by region; Google notes additional EU regulatory requirements for in-car use of 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Check the exact phone and vehicle or stereo models against Google’s Android Auto requirements and the vehicle maker’s compatibility information.

If Android Auto still does not connect

  1. Check the vehicle display: Complete any pairing or setup prompts, then select Android Auto on the screen if offered.
  2. Check the car’s settings: Confirm Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment system. Restart the infotainment system and try again.
  3. Check model-specific guidance: If the phone and vehicle appear compatible but the connection still fails, consult the vehicle manufacturer. Menu names and troubleshooting steps can differ by vehicle.

Google’s car-side troubleshooting recommends checking that Android Auto is enabled and restarting the infotainment system. Its USB-cable advice applies to wired Android Auto, not as a general remedy for wireless settings. Google Android Auto Help: My Android Auto app isn’t working.

Do permissions or battery settings need changing?

Google Play services provides Android Auto preferences among device-connection controls; on supported devices, look under Settings > Connected devices within those controls. Android’s exact labels can vary, so searching Settings for “Android Auto” may be easier. Google describes permissions related to functions such as location, contacts, messages, nearby-device interactions, and calls, but that list is not a universal recipe requiring every permission to establish wireless projection. See Google’s device-connection controls and permissions.

Do not assume that disabling battery optimization or enabling Wi-Fi scanning will repair a wireless connection: Google’s cited setup guidance does not identify either as a universal fix. Its Samsung unused-app advice concerns apps that may be temporarily disabled and missing from the Android Auto launcher, rather than wireless projection failures. What settings can—and cannot—solve

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services are the relevant phone settings Google identifies for completing first-time wireless setup. Repeatedly toggling them is not established as a cure for every later disconnection. And no phone setting can add wireless projection support to a phone, car, or stereo that does not support it. If the setup checklist is satisfied and the models are compatible, the next useful step is vehicle-specific troubleshooting rather than changing unrelated phone controls.
