To run Restreamer continuously, deploy its Docker container on an Ubuntu VPS, persist its configuration and data, connect a real input feed, and publish that feed to YouTube Live using YouTube’s current RTMPS URL and stream key. Docker’s restart policy helps bring the container back after a restart, but it does not guarantee a 24/7 broadcast: the input, server, outbound network, and YouTube ingest must all remain healthy.
How the setup works—and what Restreamer needs to stream
The basic path is video or stream input → Restreamer on the VPS → YouTube Live. Restreamer is a self-hosted streaming server distributed as a Docker image; its official Linux installation documentation lists Ubuntu as supported and its project documentation describes publishing to YouTube Live. The VPS is a persistent host for the Restreamer service and relay. You still need to configure a source: for example, an existing stream or a media feed. The exact input steps depend on whether your source is OBS, a camera, a file playlist, or another stream; the title alone does not determine that workflow. Do not assume the server itself supplies video content.
Prepare an Ubuntu VPS
Choose a 64-bit Intel or AMD VPS that supports Docker. The official Restreamer Linux guide names Ubuntu and that CPU architecture, but does not specify a universal CPU, memory, or VPS size. Size the machine for the input and any transcoding you plan to do, and verify sustained outbound bandwidth and transfer allowance for your stream bitrate. If you record locally, account for storage and backups too. No hosting provider or plan is established as a tested recommendation.

- Check that your provider permits Docker and allows the required inbound and outbound traffic.
- Plan firewall rules before exposing the service; open only the ports needed for your chosen interfaces and protocols.
- Use persistent storage for Restreamer’s configuration and data, and make a backup of its configuration.
- Install Docker using Docker’s current official Ubuntu instructions; installation details can change.
Run Restreamer with persistent data
Use the current command and image instructions on the official Restreamer Linux installation page and verify port requirements for the release you deploy. The project repository’s example uses bind mounts at /opt/restreamer/config and /opt/restreamer/data, maps ports 8080 and 8181 for web access, 1935 and 1936 for RTMP-related use, and UDP 6000 for SRT. Treat these as example mappings, not a requirement to expose every port publicly.
The repository example also uses --restart=always. A restart policy can restart a stopped container, including after a host restart, but it cannot repair an unavailable source, a failed network path, insufficient server capacity, or a YouTube-side interruption. Keep the configuration and data directories persistent so a container replacement does not discard its state. See the project repository for the example and confirm syntax against the image version you run.

Secure the management interface and any public ingest
Set a strong, unique administrative password. Do not leave the management interface openly reachable without HTTPS and access controls. Restrict firewall access to the web interface to trusted addresses or protect it with an appropriate access-control layer.
If you enable public RTMP ingest, restrict who can reach it and use the token protection supported by your deployed Restreamer release. The official RTMP ingest guide warns that an exposed ingest port can let anyone push a stream to the server. Its token instructions are from a legacy guide, so check the syntax for your current release rather than copying old settings blindly.

RTMPS protects the outbound connection to YouTube; it does not by itself secure Restreamer’s web interface or a public RTMP input. Keep stream keys and other secrets out of public logs, screenshots, and repositories.
Connect an input and publish to YouTube Live
- Configure the source in Restreamer. Select and test the feed you intend to relay. Source-specific setup varies, so confirm that the feed is actually reaching Restreamer before configuring YouTube.
- Get the destination details from YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the current RTMPS server URL and stream key for the live stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP; see YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and RTMPS encryption guidance.
- Add a YouTube publication service in Restreamer. Enter the RTMPS URL and stream key in the destination fields, then save and start publishing. Labels can vary by Restreamer release; use its Quick Start for the deployed version.
- Protect the key. Treat it like a password. If it is exposed, reset or replace it through YouTube Studio and update the Restreamer destination.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream health. Confirm that YouTube receives the intended picture and sound before relying on the broadcast.
Choose encoder settings that fit the feed and connection
For 1080p at 30 fps with H.264, YouTube recommends a 5 Mbps video bitrate. Its general guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or carry the stream. See YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.

- Match the output resolution and frame rate to the source and the quality you intend to deliver.
- Use a compatible H.264 video profile and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS publishing.
- Set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Check that the source codec and Restreamer output profile are compatible. If you transcode, allow for additional CPU demand rather than assuming a VPS size.
Measure the server’s sustained upload capacity under the intended load. YouTube recommends at least 20% bandwidth headroom; see encoder settings and YouTube’s streaming tips. The stream bitrate is only one part of the network requirement: test actual egress and account for other traffic on the VPS.
Test recovery before depending on a 24/7 broadcast
- Start the input and verify it appears in Restreamer.
- Start the YouTube publication and check the preview, audio, and stream health.
- Confirm the VPS can sustain the selected bitrate with headroom, without dropped or degraded output.
- Test a container restart and a host restart while monitoring whether the input and publication resume as expected.
- Arrange external monitoring if you need to know promptly when the stream stops; a Docker restart policy is not monitoring.
Continuous streaming depends on the source, process health, host resources, outbound network, YouTube ingest, and account eligibility. A restart setting is useful recovery behavior, not an uptime commitment or a fix for every failure.

Troubleshoot common failures

Understand the archive limit for a continuous stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish how a continuous 24-hour stream will be archived in full, and it does not prove that longer streams are never archived. If a complete recording matters, arrange and verify an independent recording or segmentation plan, and check YouTube’s current policy before relying on the channel archive.
